As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but underscore the remarkable impact James Gunn, now co-head of DC Studios, had on shaping the cosmic realm within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). When the first Guardians of the Galaxy film graced our screens, it introduced a band of obscure heroes who, at the time, seemed to hold little interest. Yet, Gunn managed to ignite that spark of care and affection, crafting one of the most exhilarating, emotionally resonant, innovative, and potent films in the MCU with his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

In my opinion, the original “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” surpassed its predecessor by delving deeper into the life of Peter Quill, revealing who his father truly was. Primarily set on the planet Ego, this film showcases Peter’s journey to master his newly acquired abilities. However, the heart-wrenching twist that leaves an indelible mark is the revelation that his father, despite being a powerful entity, lacked feelings and was responsible for the untimely death of his mother. To make matters even more poignant, there’s the moving scene where Yondu expresses his affection for Peter, acknowledging him as his own. All in all, this movie is nothing short of spectacular.

7. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was their first venture for the Russo brothers, who directed “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Now in the present-day timeline, Captain America (Steve Rogers) is partnering with SHIELD. However, he must navigate his values and attachments in this altered world after encountering events that cast doubt on his new associates. Subsequently, a series of events unfolds, leading him to reconnect with an old friend, ultimately resulting in the downfall of SHIELD at the hands of HYDRA.

This movie offers an impressive display of spycraft and exhilarating action sequences. It’s captivating to watch Captain America adapt in a changed world, and the emotional impact of his reunion with his long-lost friend after all those years is profound, given his assumption of his friend’s demise. The film strikes the right chords, and it skillfully advances the storyline for Steve Rogers.

6. Thor: Ragnarok

In the initial two films, Thor struggled with self-discovery as he seemed out of place alongside his fellow Avengers. Initially portrayed as a Shakespearean extraterrestrial deity from Asgard, Thor underwent significant transformation in “Thor: Ragnarok.” This transformation made him feel more integrated and valued within the group. Additionally, this change was further solidified when his own family betrayed him and he found camaraderie with the Hulk on the planet Sakaar.

The humor in this movie establishes its unique atmosphere, and it’s amplified by breathtaking action sequences and subtle character development among Thor, Loki, and Hulk. Director Taika Waititi truly excelled with this project, though his subsequent film didn’t quite reach the same heights. Nevertheless, Ragnarok significantly transformed the character of Thor and expanded the boundaries of comedy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

5. Deadpool & Wolverine

Discussing comedy, Deadpool and Wolverine can be seen as a follow-up to films that weren’t part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), yet this movie introduces the Ryan Reynolds portrayed character into the MCU, specifically the Void between dimensions. Remarkably, it achieved something unprecedented in 25 years of Marvel productions: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine preparing to join forces with Deadpool for a battle (as we generally avoid mentioning the Deadpool from X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

In partnership with Shawn Levy, Reynolds worked alongside an exceptional group to breathe life into this enchanting film. It’s riotously funny, lewd at times, brimming with nostalgia, and seems tailor-made as the ideal movie that seamlessly connects the MCU to everything that preceded and coincided with the other Marvel series. Although it might not revolutionize the narrative direction of the rest of the MCU tales, this film stands out due to its remarkable fusion of significant narratives.

4. Captain America: Civil War

Many folks hold a deep affection for Russo’s first film, “The Winter Soldier“, but personally, my loyalty lies with “Captain America: Civil War” as my favorite in that trilogy. Watching a classic comic book tale unfold on the big screen and witnessing heroes I’ve long admired clash was an intense emotional journey. The movie is filled with tension, and it raises significant questions that these characters must answer. I appreciate how these issues were addressed, and the way the relationships between characters like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers evolved as a result is captivating.

This film not only marks Spider-Man’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but it sets a remarkable precedent. By skillfully balancing multiple heroes, each with their unique personas and towering egos, it paved the way for movies like “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” to thrive.

3. Spider-Man: No Way Home

Discussing Spider-Man, the movie Spider-Man: No Way Home brings back a wave of nostalgia. Although whispers and speculations might have teased the grand reveal of this film, nothing compares to the thrill of witnessing Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland together in their Spidey suits, working as a team to save the day. Director Jon Watts skillfully orchestrated a fitting farewell for these superheroes, while also allowing MCU’s Peter Parker to learn valuable lessons with the assistance of trustworthy allies.

Absolutely, the film takes an emotional journey too, as Peter Parker decides to disappear at the end, but it’s also a pivotal moment where Peter finally lives up to his potential and the expectations Tony Stark set for him long ago, making him the Spider-Man. The scene where Garfield rescues MJ is incredibly touching and stands out as one of the most moving moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Therefore, this film deserves its position among the top three.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Discussing deeply moving narratives, Gunn’s last movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is among the most skillfully made films in the superhero genre ever created. The spotlight now falls on Rocket Raccoon, as we witness his transformation from a lone, tough character to a being who embarks on an intergalactic voyage before meeting companions like Groot and the rest of the Guardians. It’s heartrending to observe this journey.

In one of the most chilling portrayals in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chukwudi Iwuji brings The High Evolutionary to life as a formidable villain. Notably, Rocket Raccoon, initially known for his humorous antics and computer-generated imagery, was skillfully transformed into the emotional core of the team in this film. Moreover, the exhilarating action sequences, striking visuals, and the way the movie concludes a story while hinting at future adventures make it an ideal farewell for these crucial characters within the MCU.

1. Avengers: Endgame

In closing, “Avengers: Endgame” undeniably shines as the most powerful sequel within the series. Although categorized as a crossover film, it serves as a follow-up to the preceding three “Avengers” movies and wraps up the Infinity Saga in one of the most triumphant cinematic productions to date. Post the occurrence known as the blip, the surviving heroes join forces for one final attempt to rescue our world.

The thrilling science fiction heist narrative reaches new heights through its emotional depth, resolutions, and maximum tension – the highest ever within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s an expertly crafted epic movie, providing a fitting conclusion to the Infinity Saga, as it marks the emotional farewells of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. In summary, it was one of the wildest and most gripping cinematic experiences in superhero films, and undeniably ranks among the strongest sequels within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
