8 Horror Movies Launching Future A-List Stars

Many classic horror films featured actors who were just starting their careers. Horror movies are known for discovering fresh, new talent before anyone else in the industry. Because they often have smaller budgets and are willing to give unknown actors a chance, the genre has frequently helped launch the careers of future stars.

Before becoming famous, many of today’s biggest stars got their start in horror movies – often running from masked villains or surviving terrifying situations. At the time, they were just unknown actors, part of larger casts and without much recognition. Looking back at those films now is strange, because you realize how many major careers were beginning right there, hidden in plain sight.

The Faculty (1998)

Robert Rodriguez’s The Faculty came out during the peak of late-90s teen horror, mixing sci-fi suspense with the style of slasher films. The movie takes place in a high school that’s been invaded by alien parasites, and it’s full of energy and witty conversations. Looking back, the cast is remarkably impressive – it’s packed with stars!

Josh Hartnett played Zeke Tyler, a rebellious character, right before becoming a major star in the early 2000s with films like Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down. Elijah Wood starred as Casey Connor, and would soon become famous worldwide for his role as Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings.

Jordana Brewster played the popular student Delilah in The Faculty, a role that helped launch her into the Fast & Furious franchise. Before becoming a music superstar, Usher played the athlete Gabe Santoro. And long before hosting The Daily Show, Jon Stewart appeared as a teacher involved with drugs. The Faculty is now remembered as a film featuring many actors who were just starting to become famous.

Urban Legend (1998)

Released during the wave of slasher films following Scream, Urban Legend tapped into common college anxieties by using well-known urban myths as the basis for frightening scenes. Although reviews weren’t great, the movie featured actors who later became much bigger stars than the film’s initial success would indicate. Jared Leto played the role of Paul Gardner, a moody and withdrawn character.

Long before Jared Leto won an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club or joined the Suicide Squad films, and before Tara Reid became famous for American Pie and her appearances in tabloids, she played Sasha, Natalie’s best friend. Michael Rosenbaum, who later became well-known as Lex Luthor in Smallville, played the villainous Parker Riley.

Joshua Jackson played Damon Brooks just before his role on Dawson’s Creek made him famous. Now, looking back, Urban Legend doesn’t seem like a typical, forgettable horror movie. Instead, it feels like an early look at a group of actors who would go on to become major stars in television, film, and popular culture.

The Lost Boys (1987)

I recently revisited Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys, and wow, it still holds up! It wasn’t just another vampire movie; it really flipped the script with its incredible 80s style – think bright neon, awesome music, and a whole lot of teenage attitude. Back when it came out, it felt like a really bold move for the horror genre. But looking back now, it’s amazing to realize just how many big stars it helped launch – it’s a fun, iconic film that’s remembered for so much more than just scares.

Kiefer Sutherland was captivating as David, the cold and commanding vampire leader in the film. He later found huge success with the TV show 24, where he created a new standard for dramatic television leads. Corey Haim played Sam Emerson, providing the film with much of its heart, and soon became one of the most famous teen actors of the late 1980s.

I always thought Alexander Winter was great as that surprisingly sweet vampire, Marko, before he totally became Bill Preston in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure – a role that really stuck with people. Looking back at The Lost Boys, it’s clear that movie captured those actors at a time when having that natural ‘it’ factor meant more than a long list of credits. It’s what helped turn what could have been just another horror movie into a true cult classic and launched some serious careers.

A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street is famous for introducing Freddy Krueger, but it also secretly helped launch the careers of many people who would go on to be major figures in both horror and popular movies. While the film’s creative storytelling and unique scares quickly made it a hit, the actors chosen for the roles were just as important to its lasting success.

I still remember being totally shocked when I first saw Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street! He played Kirsty’s boyfriend, Glen, and that scene… wow, it’s seriously one of the most memorable deaths in horror movie history. It’s wild to think that was so early in his career, because he quickly became a huge star thanks to his work with Tim Burton and, of course, Pirates of the Caribbean!

Lin Shaye had a minor role in films before later becoming a major horror star thanks to the Insidious movies. Robert Englund’s iconic performance as Freddy Krueger made him a horror legend and shaped the character for many years. Though the film was about scaring people, the actors themselves achieved lasting fame and became leaders in the horror genre.

A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

Many fans consider A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors to be the best film in the series. It built upon Freddy Krueger’s story and added more emotional weight. The movie takes place in a psychiatric hospital and centers on teenagers who actively fight back against Freddy, which allowed the actors to really shine. Patricia Arquette played a key role as Kristen Parker.

Patricia Arquette quickly demonstrated both fragility and power as an actress. She went on to receive praise for films like Medium and True Romance, and later won an Oscar for her performance in Boyhood, establishing herself as a highly respected dramatic actor in Hollywood. Laurence Fishburne also had an early role as a hospital orderly named Max, well before gaining recognition in Boyz n the Hood.

Laurence Fishburne later starred in The Matrix trilogy and went on to have a successful career in film and television. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors is particularly memorable not only for its creative story, but also because it featured actors who became major stars, and it remains the most frequently quoted film in the Nightmare on Elm Street series.

The Return Of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1995)

Originally panned when it came out, The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (also known as The Next Generation) is now famous mostly for its actors. What was once considered a weak entry in the series now seems like a strange look at the beginnings of several major Hollywood careers. Notably, Matthew McConaughey gave a wildly energetic performance as Vilmer Slaughter.

Before Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club, he was just starting out. Similarly, Renée Zellweger played the final girl, Jenny, in one of her first movie roles. This was before she became famous for romantic comedies and later earned critical praise for films like Chicago and Judy.

Looking back, it’s amazing to realize neither of those actors were famous yet! That makes seeing them in the movie even more impactful now. Even though The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre isn’t everyone’s favorite, people now see it as a really interesting look at two actors who would become huge stars, showing them at their most unique and unfiltered.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1992)

Before the popular TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer became known for its unique style, there was a much lighter, more comedic movie of the same name. Though very different in tone from the series, the film subtly featured several actors who would later become famous. Luke Perry, for example, played a moody teenager in the movie just before becoming a teen heartthrob on Beverly Hills, 90210.

Hilary Swank had a small part in a movie well before she won two Academy Awards. Ben Affleck played a basketball tough guy long before he became an Oscar-winning director and starred as Batman. And David Arquette appeared as Benny, a friend who turns into a vampire, years before becoming famous in the movie Scream.

Seth Green and Thomas Jane were also among the early cast members. Both actors went on to have successful and recognizable careers in film and TV. Looking back, what seemed like a lighthearted, disposable movie from the early 90s actually offers a fascinating glimpse of these performers right before they became famous.

Idle Hands (1999)

Released in 1999, Idle Hands mixed goofy humor with gory horror and didn’t initially find many viewers. But over the years, it’s become a cult favorite, largely thanks to its cast of up-and-coming actors who later became well-known stars.

Devon Sawa played Anton Tobias, building on his popularity from movies like Casper and Final Destination. Jessica Alba starred as his girlfriend, Molly, just before becoming a major star in the 2000s with shows like Dark Angel and films like Fantastic Four. Seth Green added a lot of humor as Mick, further establishing himself as a well-known figure in pop culture.

Elden Henson also played the role of Pnub, several years before he became well-known again as Foggy Nelson in the Marvel series Daredevil. While Idle Hands might not have gotten much attention when it first came out, its cast now makes it a surprisingly strong horror comedy for its time.
