8 Christmas horror movies streaming this December 2024

As someone who’s been through more than a few dark nights myself, I can’t help but appreciate the chilling allure of these Christmas horror movies. It’s always refreshing to switch things up during the holiday season and delve into the unsettling world of Jack Skellington or the blood-curdling cries of Art the Clown.

Swap out the jingle bells for a moment and delve into those timeless Christmas horror flicks! Holidays can get monotonous, so why not switch things up? For us die-hard horror enthusiasts, that twist often involves immersing ourselves in the darker, more brutal interpretations of traditionally cheerful yuletide tales.

Instead of watching Elf again, consider giving a spin to the timeless slasher Black Christmas this holiday season, or opt for one of these other chilling Christmas-themed horror films currently available for streaming!

The Nightmare Before Christmas

The argument about whether or not this iconic Disney film is more suitable for Halloween or Christmas continues, but I find myself comfortably in the middle, delighting in watching Jack Skellington and Sally twice a year. It definitely has a “why not celebrate both holidays?” feel to it. With the advent of Disney+, fans can look forward to this unique holiday movie staying accessible for quite some time.

Better Watch Out

As a horror movie enthusiast, I’ve got to say that “Better Watch Out” gives the traditional babysitter-in-a-slasher-movie concept a delightfully chilling holiday makeover! This dark thriller follows Ashley, a teenage sitter, as she bravely protects her young charges from an unexpected home invasion. The movie takes a wickedly clever turn, transforming the familiar plot into a heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat experience that deserves recognition among the best in horror films for its originality and strong female protagonist.

Black Christmas

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Bob Clark’s legendary Christmas horror movie, “Black Christmas”. This film stood out remarkably for its era as a ’70s slasher, with a predominantly female cast and a setting in a sorority house. However, it deserves recognition on its own merits as well, having earned a place among the greats. Its impact on the genre is evident, particularly in films like John Carpenter’s “Halloween”.

Krampus

Dropping Christmas from the equation, the concept of a massive man slipping down your chimney in the middle of the night is incredibly unsettling. Krampus, modeled after an ancient character who serves as a sort of “wicked” Santa Claus, finds joy in transforming holiday joys into dreadful experiences; you’ll never view elves or gingerbread men with the same innocent eyes again.

Violent Night

David Harbour adopts a more ominous take on his Jim Hopper character in this gritty Christmas action movie. Instead of the jolly Santa Claus we’re accustomed to, Harbour plays a unique interpretation of the iconic figure. A family is simply trying to celebrate the holidays when a group of ruthless mercenaries storm their home and take them hostage. However, this version of Santa Claus intervenes unexpectedly, leaving the villains taken aback.

Gremlins

What about rephrasing it like this: Isn’t everyone charmed by those mischievous gremlins from the 1984 hit movie? Although there have been discussions over the years about whether or not Gremlins qualifies as a Christmas film, it undeniably does. The entire plot revolves around a Christmas present that goes terribly wrong! Furthermore, these gremlins cause chaos throughout the fictional town of Kingstown Falls.

The Mean One

Currently, “Terrifier 3” is not available for streaming, but fans can catch a different perspective of David Howard Thornton, who plays Art the Clown, in a chilling reimagining of the classic Christmas tale, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Instead of his signature black-and-white jumpsuit, Thornton transforms into the Grinch with green skin, delivering what is arguably the scariest interpretation of the character yet.

It’s a Wonderful Knife

Titled as a twist on the beloved Christmas tale “It’s a Wonderful Life“, “It’s a Wonderful Blade” narrates the story of Winnie (Jane Widdop), who heroically saved her town from a murderer. However, when life throws a few unexpected challenges at Winnie, she yearns for the life she never had, which transports her into an alternate universe where the killer remains at large. In this universe, she must join forces with a local misfit to apprehend him and return to her original reality.
