7th Heaven cast members acknowledge Stephen Collins sex abuse scandal in podcast: ‘We do not excuse or condone his behavior’
As a passionate fan who grew up with the Camdens and their moral lessons, I find myself deeply moved by the recent episode of Catching Up with the Camdens. It’s both heartening and disheartening to see the actors addressing the dark cloud that has tarnished one of their own – Stephen Collins.
In the most recent installment of their freshly launched “Catching Up with the Camdens” podcast, which revisits episodes from 7th Heaven, actress Beverley Mitchell, David Gallagher, and Mackenzie Rosman addressed the sexual misconduct allegations involving co-star Stephen Collins.
In simpler terms, the three actors who portrayed characters named Lucy, Simon, and Ruthie Camden in the TV series that aired from 1996 to 2007 on The WB/The CW discussed an awkward topic at the beginning of their podcast’s recap of the pilot episode.
In 2014, Collins, aged 76 at the time, openly admitted on various platforms such as interviews with Katie Couric and a statement to People, that he engaged in sexual misconduct involving three minor girls between 1973 and 1994.
39-year-old Gallagher stated that any form of abuse, including sexual abuse, is utterly unjustifiable. Victims of such mistreatment deserve empathy and the necessary assistance to help them cope.
Rosman, aged 34, clarified their reason for starting off with a disclaimer: “Given how significant Stephen was in the series and our personal lives, it seemed impossible not to discuss him.
She mentioned that they made it a point to emphasize that there were no inappropriate interactions involving Stephen, the actor who played Reverend Eric Camden during the series’ entire 11-season duration.
Mitchell communicated that Collins won’t be participating in this podcast. They clarify that they don’t endorse or approve of his actions. The purpose of their collaboration, they explained, is to reminisce with you, our valued audience, about the ’90s, and to recount our cherished memories from 7th Heaven.
Gallagher concluded by assuring, “We acknowledge how challenging this may be for some of you, and we empathize with those it might trigger. However, we want to express our heartfelt appreciation for the immense love and backing you, our community, have extended towards us.
‘So, hopefully you guys will stick with us as we continue on this journey.’
In October of 2014, a recording from 2012 published by TMZ revealed Collins admitting to sexual misconduct involving minors that allegedly occurred in the years 1973, 1982, and 1994.
In the chilly month of December, 2014, I chose to express a statement to People, clarifying that in the past two decades since my previous occurrence, I haven’t felt the urge or impulse to engage in such behavior again.
Approximately four decades past, I committed an action that was profoundly wrong and I continue to feel remorseful about it. Since then, I have been making amends for my mistake. Recently, I chose to speak openly about these matters due to the release of a recording made by my former wife, Faye Grant, during a private marriage counseling session in January 2012, which was published by several news outlets two months ago.
It turns out that this conversation was secretly taped, neither the therapist nor I were aware or had given permission for it. In the recording, I shared details about incidents from 20, 32, and 40 years back in my past.
Collins stated, ‘Since the release of the recording, there have been speculations and insinuations about my actions that greatly exceed the reality. Despite the difficulty, I feel it’s important for everyone to understand the true facts.’
In a turn of events, Collins relinquished several acting positions and tendered his resignation to the SAG-AFTRA board. Subsequently, broadcasts of 7th Heaven were pulled from television due to the unfolding narrative.
