When The Big Bang Theory finished in 2019, it was one of the most popular comedies on TV. Though the series finale gave a happy and satisfying conclusion for most of the characters, the story didn’t truly end there. Young Sheldon was already on air, and now Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage expands the Cooper family’s story, taking place in Texas during the late 80s and early 90s. However, this newest show is a significant shift in direction compared to other shows connected to The Big Bang Theory.
Unlike previous seasons of The Big Bang Theory spinoffs which aired on CBS, the new show Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will stream on HBO Max. This means it will have a shorter first season with only 10 episodes, instead of the usual 20 or more. As a sci-fi comedy, the show will need to pack more story into fewer episodes than its predecessors.
While viewers expected to see recognizable actors in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the premiere featured a surprising appearance by Raj Koothrappali from The Big Bang Theory. However, fans shouldn’t expect post-apocalyptic Raj to stick around for long, as his character is quickly killed off to emphasize the dangers of the show’s world. Though his abrupt death is upsetting, the series hints that things might not be as hopeless as they seem.
Raj Deserved A Better Ending In The Big Bang Theory
Raj Koothrappali developed a lot more confidence over the twelve seasons of The Big Bang Theory, making his final outcome especially heartbreaking. While he was the most openly hopeful romantic of the group, Raj was the only one who ended the series still single.
Raj’s storyline felt incomplete, though a different kind of successful ending could have resolved it. Throughout The Big Bang Theory, Howard experienced the most significant growth, changing from an awkward and immature person into a husband, father, and astronaut. Sheldon achieved a Nobel Prize and became more appreciative of his friends and family, and Leonard and Penny were preparing to welcome their first child. Even Stuart, who was often the target of jokes and felt isolated, eventually found a loving relationship with Denise.
Raj’s journey from being unable to talk to women without drinking to overcoming his selective mutism was a significant development. However, The Big Bang Theory appeared more focused on ending the gag than on delving into the underlying causes of his condition.
Sadly, The Big Bang Theory didn’t give Raj a strong storyline after his initial character arc. He didn’t need to end up in a relationship to have a good conclusion, but he deserved some achievement – either professionally or personally – that showed his growth. It often felt like the show simply needed one character to remain unmarried, and Raj ended up being that person.
In a surprisingly touching turn of events, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe delivers the happy ending Raj was originally denied. This version of the story sees Raj find love and get married, though sadly, his joy is short-lived when his wife is eaten by a giant moth.
Raj’s Death Bodes Poorly For Stuart Fails To Save The Universe
Raj’s brief appearance was a genuinely pleasant surprise. Even though The Big Bang Theory doesn’t usually generate intense spoiler concerns like Game of Thrones, the show’s creators did a great job keeping Kunal Nayyar’s cameo secret until the episode aired.
While the initial surprise is strong, it soon becomes clear that Raj’s situation exists mainly to show the seriousness of the story’s consequences in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. This feels less like a natural development and more like an attempt to force an emotional reaction from the audience.
Raj’s death feels less meaningful than if it had been a natural consequence of his character’s development. It seems like a quick way to create drama, almost as if the show treated a fan-favorite character as disposable. This is particularly disappointing considering Raj didn’t get a satisfying conclusion in The Big Bang Theory. Instead of giving him a chance to grow, the new show initially makes his story seem even more tragic.
While the show’s initial idea is better than how it actually plays out, things are looking up for season two. Because Stuart and his friends journey to different realities, there’s a good chance we might see another version of Raj in future episodes of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. It’s uncertain if this will happen, but it would be a great way to finally give Raj, a much-loved character from The Big Bang Theory, the happy ending he deserved.
