7 Unsolved Mysteries from Big Mouth’s Series Finale That Will Leave You Shocked!
The popular series Big Mouth has concluded with its eighth season, but it leaves some mysteries unsolved. In this final run of ten episodes, characters like Jessi, Nick, Andrew, Missy, and Matthew embark on high school life. Familiar voices in the cast of Big Mouth season 8 include Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, and Ayo Edebiri, along with some new faces joining the ensemble beyond the regulars.
As the series progresses, viewers become deeply invested in these characters and their narratives. Yet, certain storylines are incomplete or not addressed at all, leaving spectators perplexed – particularly since this is the concluding chapter of Big Mouth. Despite the finale of Big Mouth serving as a satisfying conclusion for all parties involved, it fails to provide answers to some significant questions.
7. Where Is Montel? (& Are They Still A Shame Wizard?)
Connie & Maury’s Child Doesn’t Return In Season 8
In the animated series Big Mouth, there are multiple characters associated with Human Resources. However, Montel is unique as he’s a character born from the parent show. A significant storyline within Human Resources revolves around Montel’s realization that they aspire to become a Shame Wizard, instead of a Hormone Monster, which initially confuses their parents. Interestingly, despite Montel making a dramatic entrance by emerging from Maury (literally) and into Connie’s arms in Big Mouth season 6, they are mysteriously absent in season 8.
It’s quite unusual that Montel is absent from Big Mouth season 7 given their significant role across both series and the fact that they are offspring of two major characters. This absence seems even more peculiar since the writers have the opportunity to reveal more about Montel’s journey as a Shame Wizard, their experiences in higher education, and their current identity as a fully-grown being – information that many viewers are eager to learn.
6. Who Is The Masked Principal?
Bridgeton Middle’s Enigmatic Principal Is Never Revealed
Although numerous speculations swirl around the true identity of the Masked Principal within Big Mouth, it’s intriguing that the series refrains from disclosing this secret. Considering the long-running joke about the Masked Principal has been a staple since season 4, it can be a bit disheartening. Yet, at the same time, it’s not too surprising given the show’s pattern of maintaining mystery. Intriguingly, the Masked Principal consistently attempts to persuade both viewers and students that he is, in fact, director Roman Polanski.
Indeed, this humor leans towards the dark side, given Polanski’s background, and it mirrors the style often found in “Big Mouth.” The idea of Leore Paulblart, Rabbi Paul Blart’s grown son, donning the Masked Principal’s role could have been a riot. However, he winds up as the Ponytail Killer instead. It would have been equally amusing if the enigma had unveiled Principal Barron, the initial headteacher, given her lengthy anticipation for retirement. Regrettably, this mystery remains unsolved.
5. How Does Coach Steve Have Two Hands Again?
The Bad Mitten Causes Steve To Lose His Hand In Season 7
In the seventh season of the show “Big Mouth,” titled “The Bad Hookup,” Coach Steve becomes overtaken by his peculiar and aggressive alternate persona, the Bad Mitten puppet. When he encounters Jay’s Mom again, this unsettling character fails to impress her, leading her to shoot Steve’s hand off with a shotgun. Unlike many animated series that follow a flexible timeline, where significant incidents like these aren’t typically permanent, “Big Mouth” stands out by making such events part of the ongoing narrative.
As a devoted cinephile, I must admit that Steve’s absence from the climax of Big Mouth season 7 left me a bit puzzled. Given that the penultimate episode was all about summer vacations and the finale depicted their first day at high school, it felt fitting. However, his surprising reappearance in season 8’s premiere at Bridgeton High as Nurse Coach Steve, with both hands intact, left me wondering – what became of Steve’s hand? The Bad Mitten was nowhere to be seen and there seemed no hint of a prosthetic or glove. It would have been satisfying to see this detail addressed in the final season.
4. Who Is Jay’s Mom’s Daughter?
Jenna Bilzerian Reveals A Secret Child In Big Mouth Season 3
In the third season of “Big Mouth,” during the episode “Girls Are Angry Too,” Jenna Bilzerian dropped a bombshell by revealing she had a secret daughter. Subsequent episodes never touched on this revelation, and surprisingly, it wasn’t mentioned in the final season either. It’s not just about discovering who Jenna’s secret daughter is, but also questioning if the child exists at all. This intriguing plot point remains unresolved, leaving me curious about its fate in future “Big Mouth” narratives.
From my perspective, given Jenna Bilzerian’s frequent intoxication that often leaves her struggling to recall her daily life with her three sons, there’s a strong suspicion that the rumor about her secret daughter might just be unfounded.
There’s also a theory circulating that Lola and Jay could be siblings, but considering their tumultuous relationship in ‘Big Mouth’ season 8—which includes their reunion and subsequent separation—it seems unlikely this is the truth. Jenna remains an intriguing mystery who seems to hold more secrets about her husband’s questionable business practices than what’s publicly known, making it a pity that this storyline hasn’t been explored further or concluded satisfactorily.
3. What Happens To Devon?
Voice Actor Jak Knight Passed Away In 2022

Although it was seldom expected that character Devon would reappear in Big Mouth’s eighth season, it’s still somewhat disheartening that his storyline doesn’t receive a fitting conclusion. Unfortunately, Jak Knight, who lent his voice to Devon, passed away in 2022. In season 7, the character is present in the backdrop of scenes but remains silent, whereas in season 8, he’s conspicuously absent. In the finale, Missy experiences a vision of both Devon and Charles Lu as she reflects on her middle school years, expressing longing for him, but the series doesn’t clarify his whereabouts or circumstances.
In simpler terms, the animated show “Big Mouth” merely acknowledges both characters Devon and Knight in a respectful manner, without revealing their ultimate fates. Although I appreciate this tribute, it leaves me curious about their stories, particularly since they are key figures in significant storylines such as Devon’s marriage to Devin and Missy’s exploration of her racial identity.
2. Why Is Judd So Attached To Honeydew’s Son?
Nick’s Brother Shares An Intense Bond With His Drug Dealer’s Child
In the 4th episode of season 7 titled “Day Tripping,” Nick and Andrew accompany Judd to New York with an aim to procure drugs, hoping to appear more mature in front of Leah’s high school friends. However, a developing tension arises between Nick and Judd as Nick becomes envious of Judd’s connection with Melon Ball, the son of Honeydew, a laid-back hippie drug dealer. This jealousy stems from his confusion over why Judd displays such affection towards a seemingly random child. Despite Judd denying it when questioned by Nick, there remains no definitive proof either way that Melon Ball is not fathered by Judd.
It’s evident that there seems to be some sort of relationship between Judd and Melon Ball, but the specific nature remains unknown. In seasons 7 and 8 of Big Mouth, Judd is approximately 18 years old, still attending high school, which is hinted at when Andrew questions him about his altercation with Pumbaa before the first day. This leads to a possibility that he could be Melon Ball’s father, as there appears to be a resemblance between the two characters. However, even though Honeydew was only featured in season 7 of Big Mouth, I hoped that the show would explore Judd’s connection with this character, perhaps acknowledging their bond, even if it doesn’t confirm his paternity.
1. How Are Caitlin & Greg Handling Being Parents To Delilah?
Jessi Gets A New Baby Sister In Big Mouth Season 6
In the later stages of Big Mouth, a significant side story unfolds as Jessi’s father, Greg, encounters Caitlin at Trader Joe’s and subsequently welcomes their daughter, Delilah, into the world. Initially, Jessi finds it hard to accept her dad forming a new family and feels pushed aside. However, she eventually forms a strong bond with Delilah, becoming an excellent big sister. There’s a brief, awkward episode in season 7 where she can’t help but stare at Caitlin during breastfeeding sessions, but this incident is soon forgotten. Regrettably, Delilah’s character is absent from Big Mouth in season 8.
Even though Jessi now lives with Shannon, reducing her contact with Delilah, it’s striking that the baby is absent from the storyline. Caitlin makes a brief appearance during a musical scene, but there’s no hint of Delilah. Interestingly, Greg only shows up when he’s with Shannon, either at the shared condo to borrow a phone charger or attending Jessi’s debate sessions. I was hoping for more scenes showcasing Jessi as a big sister and observing Greg’s second chance at parenting, but Big Mouth had limited time to resolve all the storylines.
