7 of the most violently unsettling horror movies now streaming
As a horror enthusiast who has seen more than my fair share of chilling films, I must say that the collection you’ve presented here is truly terrifying. The level of detail and the sheer brutality depicted in these movies is something that I haven’t encountered in quite some time.
Although non-horror fans may consider all horror movies to be very much the same, we die-hards know that they are definitely not. Some are more campy, others are deadly serious. There are some with extreme gore, and others that manage to keep things scary without lots of blood.
Instead, let’s zero in on chilling horror movies – the ones that leave us feeling uneasy or apprehensive. These films, unlike some horror-comedies, don’t aim for laughs but rather to instill a sense of dread and fear.
Be aware that these synopses may contain spoilers, so proceed with caution.
“Bone Tomahawk” – In the first three acts, this movie immerses you in an intriguing, character-focused Western from the 1890s. A pair of bandits (Sid Haig and David Arquette) encounter trouble at a Native American burial site, resulting in one’s death, while the other flees to the town of Bright Hope to stash his stolen goods. However, this hiding place doesn’t escape the notice of a menacing tribe called the Troglodytes, who are not known for their leniency.
When Sheriff Franklin Hunt (played by Kurt Russell), along with his deputy (Richard Jenkins) and a gunslinger (Matthew Fox), embark on a mission to save three individuals who have been kidnapped, including a highwayman. As they journey together, they engage in conversations and exchange tales, offering insights into their personalities.
In the third act, chaos erupts unexpectedly, plunging us into a state of sheer terror. Although I’ve issued a spoiler alert, let me clarify that the sudden, gruesome incident propels the story into a horrifying realm. This event is so intense that it left my usually unflappable husband gaping in shock.
What follows is extremely unsettling, and will stick with you long after the end credits role.
Bone Tomahawk is currently streaming on Netflix.
Neighboring Girl – This movie is quite intense to say the least! It’s skillfully made and undeniably keeps you hooked throughout, but I have my doubts about whether I’d rewatch it again. Although it isn’t an exact retelling of true events, it draws inspiration from a tragic story – the horrific murder of Sylvia Likens in 1965.
In the movie, following their parents’ fatal car crash, 16-year-old Meg and her younger sister Susan with disabilities are placed under the care of Aunt Ruth. Living alongside her three sons, the house often attracts neighborhood kids who enjoy Ruth’s generosity with beer and cigarettes, making it clear that she is far from a model mother figure.
As Ruth starts to mistreat and neglect her nieces, particularly Meg, the situation spirals out of control with everyone getting involved. The abuse reaches an alarming level where Meg is stripped, beaten, and restrained in the basement. The entire neighborhood seems to be partaking in this horrific treatment, and eventually, young David steps in to aid Meg.
In a tragic turn of events, “The Girl Next Door” doesn’t offer a cheerful conclusion. What sets this movie apart and makes it particularly poignant is that the depicted incidents were not fictional; they actually happened to Sylvia Likens in real life. The acting, particularly by Blanche Baker as Ruth, is commendable and adds an extra layer of authenticity to the story.

“The Green Room” – On their way to a cancelled gig, punk band Ain’t Rights unexpectedly perform at a remote woods bar in Portland. Unfortunately, they discover it’s a gathering spot for neo-Nazis. After their set, Pat rushes back to the green room to retrieve a forgotten phone, marking the start of some difficult moments.
In a turn of events, Pat notices a young woman’s lifeless body, which has now put the skins in a position where they won’t allow the band members to escape unharmed. The group consisting of Pat (Anton Yelchin), Sam (Alia Shawcat), Reece (Joe Cole), Tiger (Callum Turner), and Amber (Imogen Poots), the deceased woman’s friend, find themselves cornered as they take refuge in a room. Facing off against the skins and their leader Darcy, portrayed remarkably by Patrick Stewart, they are forced to engage in a fierce battle for survival.
This is another brutal flick, with plenty of violence and blood, and even a dog that has been trained to attack and kill humans. Be prepared, many of the characters you will become attached to will not make it to the end of the movie alive.
Green Room can be watched on demand on Amazon Prime Video.
Title rephrased: “Terrifying Events at the Haunted House” – A thrilling, unexpectedly chilling horror movie
Not long after their arrival, the trio encountered a brutal assault (with Vera enduring a disgusting act of sexual harassment), orchestrated by a burly man referred to as the Fat Man, and a woman known as Candy Truck Woman. Remarkably, they managed to cheat death. Fast forward 16 years, Beth has blossomed into a renowned horror author, leading a happy life with a spouse and child. A phone call from Vera disrupts this peaceful existence; she’s still residing in that dismal house under the care of her mother.
Beth reluctantly returns to the house, and her mother tells her that Vera has never mentally recovered from the attack, retreating to the basement. Vera tells her sister that Fat Man and Candy Truck Woman are still stalking them, and Beth begins to hallucinate and have bad dreams.
As I immersed myself into “Incident in a Ghostland,” I couldn’t help but question the reality of what I was seeing. The chilling portrayal of the two girls, eerily reminiscent of dolls, coupled with disquieting scenes of a man handling dolls inappropriately and the unsettling presence of the two sisters, left me feeling uneasy throughout.

Martyrs: A French Extreme film enters the chat
Martyrs – If you haven’t watched the original French film Martyrs, chances are you’ve at least heard about it. And yes, as gruesome as people claim it to be, it lives up to its reputation. When it was first shown at Marche du Film in 2008, some viewers even left the theater, complaining about its “graphically disturbing” content.
After enduring over a year of torture and imprisonment, Luci manages to flee and finds herself in an orphanage. There, she develops a strong bond with a girl named Anna, who is the only person she feels comfortable enough to share her harrowing experiences of captivity with.
15 years on, Lucie forcibly enters a house and savagely slaughters its inhabitants, which include two children. She then phones Anna, who arrives shocked by the gruesome scene. Lucie claims that the couple were responsible for her torment and abduction, asserting that demons are pursuing her. Upon witnessing only Lucie inflicting self-harm, Anna believes it’s the demons doing it to her friend.
At the core of these events lies a cult that abducts and torments young females, aiming to turn them into “martyrs” who might reveal secrets about the afterlife. Tragically, the majority don’t survive the brutal treatments inflicted upon them, but Lucie manages to endure for the longest time.
The scenes of torture and injury are graphic and hard to watch, but if you can take it, Martyrs is a hard-hitting and thought-provoking horror movie.

Extremely Scary – Our last two movies hail from Argentina, crafted by Damien Rugna who is both imaginative and gifted, yet his work is unsettlingly so. These films are certainly challenging viewings, not recommended for the faint-hearted or sensitive viewers.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel my heart race when I’m thrust into a chilling atmosphere within just ten minutes of starting a new game. Just like Clara, I found myself on edge as eerie voices echoed through my own home. When I shared my concerns with my partner, he brushed them off, but the night would prove him wrong. The tranquil silence was shattered by heavy thumps coming from our bathroom.
Each night, one resident wakes up to the unsettling sounds of their furniture being rearranged and their bed shaking. A nearby neighbor tragically lost her young son who was struck by a bus. In a chilling sight, the boy’s decaying body mysteriously appears on her kitchen table, complete with a bowl of cereal and milk set before him.
As a thrill-seeking enthusiast, I embarked on an exhilarating journey with a police commissioner and a paranormal investigator, aiming to unravel the enigma that shrouded our neighborhood in chilling mystery. The frights were relentless, but the adrenaline rush was worth every heart-stopping moment. Terrifying, indeed! In 2018, the vulture dubbed “Terrified” as one of the year’s top horror movies, and I couldn’t agree more.
Terrified is available to watch on Shudder.
The movie we released last year, crafted by Rugna, quickly gained acclaim and was hailed among the top horror films of the year. It scooped up numerous accolades at Sitges and the International Fantastic Film Festival of Gerardmer.
Brothers Pedro and Jaime stumble upon a horrific body close to their work location. They later find out that an elderly lady is concealing her son Uriel. Uriel has been overtaken by an evil spirit from within the womb, causing him to look like he’s decaying, earning him the name “Decayed One.
At the site where the body was discovered, the property owner demands that the brothers transport Uriel elsewhere, but as they travel, his body unexpectedly falls from the truck and disappears. Now, with the demon targeting Pedro and Jaime, as well as their loved ones, they hastily gather their mother and embark on a journey to find Pedro’s ex-wife Sabrina, her husband, their daughter Vicky, and Pedro’s sons Jair and Santino.
In the series, you won’t have to wait long for some truly startling moments. Although The Rotten is quite nauseating, it’s a scene involving Sabrina’s pet dog that left me utterly shocked, causing me to let out an audible gasp.
As the brave band struggles for survival amidst a relentless pursuit by a malevolent entity, numerous ominous occurrences unfold, culminating in a grim conclusion.
When Evil Lurks is available to stream on Shudder.
