7 of our favorite horror movies on Prime Video this month

As a seasoned horror enthusiast who’s spent countless nights huddled under blankets while watching terrifying tales unfold on screen, I can confidently say that Prime Video has outdone itself this December! From the chilling suspense of “A Haunting in Venice” to the timeless terror of “Child’s Play,” there’s no shortage of spine-tingling entertainment.

In December, Prime Video offers a wide array of films, including numerous horror movies that have recently been or will soon be added. While many prefer watching heartwarming holiday movies during this season, the streaming platform caters to those with different tastes by providing a variety of popular horror flicks, ranging from the original “Child’s Play” to the latest installments in the “A Quiet Place” series. This month presents ample choices for viewers who are finding it difficult to choose their next streamed movie.

Except for those specifically mentioned, all the titles listed here can be streamed on Prime Video right now!

A Haunting in Venice (2022)

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share the news that Kenneth Branagh reprises his role as the enigmatic Hercule Poirot in the latest Agatha Christie screen adaptation, “A Haunting in Venice.” This chilling tale boasts an exceptional ensemble cast including Michelle Yeoh, Tina Fey, and Jamie Dornan, promising a nerve-wracking journey filled with unexpected twists lurking around every corner.

In 1947, Hercule Poirot, feeling indifferent, received an invitation to join Joyce Reynolds (Yeoh), a medium, at her Halloween gathering or seance. His friend suspected her of being a charlatan and asked Poirot to expose her, but the situation took a dark turn when one partygoer was brutally murdered.

Child’s Play (1988)

Given that Syfy has recently ended its run with the series “Chucky”, a spinoff from the lengthy slasher franchise created by Don Mancini, it could be an excellent opportunity to delve back into the origins of the menacing doll, revisiting the 1988 film where it all began.

In summary, there are a total of six movies in the series, and while some believe that “Child’s Play 2” is the top pick, the original film remains compelling. It lays the groundwork for Chucky’s origins, explaining how a notorious serial killer imbued a doll with his dark powers, paving the way for the continued terror he would cause in our lives for years to come.

Green Room (2016)

In the chilling thriller “Green Room,” Anton Yelchin portrays a member of a punk rock band who finds themselves in a harrowing situation when they’re trapped inside a venue with a menacing group of Neo-Nazis during an intense conflict that spirals into violence. As evidence of the crime mounts and the need to conceal it grows, potential witnesses might be targeted for elimination. This gripping film is known for its raw suspense, and many horror enthusiasts consider it one of the most overlooked hidden gems in modern horror cinema from the past ten years.

Beau is Afraid (2023)

  • Streaming Dec. 13

Experience a hauntingly bizarre journey through Ari Aster’s expansive tale, where Joaquin Phoenix portrays a troubled man grappling with his domineering mother. Known for his chilling horror films like “Hereditary” and “Midsommar”, Aster offers a unique blend of horror and tragicomic elements in “Beau is Afraid”. Though it includes horror aspects, the film also showcases an unconventional narrative structure.

This movie is quite lengthy, clocking in at nearly three hours. It’s captivating yet may require an acquired taste. Fans of Aster’s past works might not find this one appealing, but I believe it’s his most personal production so far and offers a remarkably authentic portrayal of anxiety disorder in film that I’ve encountered.

A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)

  • Streaming Dec. 31

In a fresh and heartfelt take on the horror franchise that captivated audiences with its post-apocalyptic setting where silence is vital to evade sound-detecting alien creatures, A Quiet Place: Day One offers an unexpectedly personal and emotional addition to the movie series.

Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn deliver remarkable performances in their roles as two survivors navigating a tragic trek across New York City in search of a pizza slice, amidst the ominous setting of the initial invasion day. At the core of these films are character-focused narratives, with “Day One” skillfully maintaining the terror and suspense that have become hallmarks of the series, all while offering a unique and innovative twist.
