7 new DC, Marvel, and Image comic book picks of the week (September 4)

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the digital worlds of comics, I can confidently say this week was a goldmine for fans like myself! The Marvel, DC, and Image Comics universes never disappoint, and this week was no exception.

Kicking off the week with a break didn’t hinder Marvel, DC, and Image Comics from releasing fantastic comic book issues this week! The Energon Universe expands further, ‘Absolute Power’ is nearing its end, and a new X-Men title makes its entrance.

Absolutely! Here’s my spin on it, from a gamer’s perspective:

Ultimates No. 4 (pick of the week)

  • Writer: Deniz Camp
  • Artist: Phil Noto

As per author Deniz Camp, the upcoming issue of Ultimates is expected to delve into the transformation of Reed Richards into Doctor Doom. While he’s hinted at revealing what befell the rest of the Fantastic Four as well, the main reason to grab this issue is his intriguing comment about Robert Downey Jr., who will portray the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He urges readers, “To grasp Robert Downey Jr. as Doom, you absolutely need to read Ultimates 4 on Sept 4th (or whenever it becomes available).”

Absolute Power No. 3

  • Writer: Mark Waid
  • Artist: Dan Mora

In issue No. 5 of “Absolute Power: Task Force VII”, Amanda Waller, sensing that the heroes of her world would continue to pursue her, decides to bring in the Crime Syndicate from another dimension as an alternative. While it’s logical for her to utilize their power, she can’t fully trust them due to their questionable nature.

In the meantime, according to this ComiXology issue’s summary, the heroes aim to seek aid from the Amazons. Although they might be indifferent to external matters due to America’s restrictions on Wonder Woman (by Tom King), there’s a possibility that the conflict could reach their shores since Themyscira is not immune to war.

Exceptional X-Men No. 1

  • Writer: Eve Ewing
  • Artist: Carmen Carnero

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this new X-Men comic book, and as a devoted fan of Kate Pryde, I admire her growth, particularly during the Krakoan era. Now, she’s shaping the future generation of mutants, providing them with the guidance and protection they need. What makes it even more exciting is that her close friend Emma Frost will be joining her in this endeavor.

Batman No. 152

  • Writers: Chip Zdarsky and Kelly Thompson
  • Artist: Mike Hawthorne

In this upcoming issue, discover how Batman and Catwoman manage to overcome obstacles set by Bizarro, Clock King, Black Alice, Deadeye, and Gunsmith. Could it be that Bizarro recovers control of himself and aids Catwoman and the Dark Knight? Regardless of the outcome, you won’t want to miss this exciting chapter in Chip Zdarsky’s stellar run on Batman.

Plastic Man No More

  • Writer: Christopher Cantwell
  • Artist: Alex Lins

This mini-series falls under DC Comics’ Black Label imprint and carries a noir mystery vibe as well. During a Justice League operation, an unexpected event occurs, leaving only Plastic Man to untangle the mystery. It appears that this series may lead to Plastic Man’s demise. Before his supposed end, he intends to seek forgiveness for past wrongs and mend fences with his son.

Scarlett No. 4

  • Writer: Kelly Thompson
  • Artist: Marco Ferrari

2024 saw Kelly Thompson’s “Scarlet” as the standout spy comic book among numerous titles within the genre, highlighting its exceptional quality.

Based on the information provided by ComiXology, this seems poised to be a massive game-changer across the whole Energon Universe! I’m eagerly anticipating uncovering the next piece of the Energon Universe mystery.

Daredevil No. 13

  • Writer: Saladin Ahmed
  • Artist: Chris Campana

If you had the scenario where Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, was humbly confessing his sins to Daredevil on your 2024 bingo card, it would suggest that Saladin Ahmed is an exceptional writer. Moreover, how Daredevil responds to Kingpin’s confession could potentially alter his relationship with Elektra.

8 Billion Genies (older pick)

  • Writer: Charles Soule
  • Artist: Ryan Browne

As a gamer, if I found a genie’s lamp in the captivating game “8 Billion Genies,” I’d ponder what to wish for. Would I ask for something for myself or someone else? Should it be an instant wish or take time to think of the perfect one? These questions can spark global turmoil in this incredible game, showcasing both the kindness and malice within humanity. Prepare yourself for a remarkable tale with a satisfying conclusion that reflects the essence of our species.
