7 new BBC dramas – from Sheridan Smith’s “unforgettable” crime story to Anna Maxwell Martin’s return
2021 has seen an abundance of captivating television shows thus far. The BBC alone has delivered the summer’s top show with “What It Feels Like for a Girl” and a delightfully bingeable new cozy crime series, starring Timothy Spall, titled “Death Valley“, which is set in Wales.
In the upcoming months, since we’re still in the first half of 2025, there are more interesting events to anticipate. Fortunately, the BBC has some fascinating new content lined up for us, and here’s what you can expect!
Riot Women
Enthusiasts of the series “Happy Valley” are bound to get excited as Sally Wainwright, who has previously worked on shows like “Last Tango in Halifax” and “Gentleman Jack,” is coming back to the BBC with a fresh, woman-centric drama.
What to Read Next
The six-part series boasts a distinguished roster of actors, such as Lorraine Ashbourne from “Sherwood,” Joanna Scanlan known for “Slow Horses,” and Amelia Bullmore, who has appeared in “The Jetty.
Based on its title, “Riot Women” is all about five women who form a punk-rock group and resolutely defy being muted by age or societal norms. We’re definitely interested!
Riot Women is set to arrive to both BBC One and BBC iPlayer later in 2025.
The Guest
The story, described as a gripping rollercoaster ride, revolves around the life of Fran, a prosperous entrepreneur, and her captivating, intense bond with an employee named Ria.
As Fran’s guidance results in an unexpected incident, the lives of two contrasting females are linked through mutual mysteries and risky schemes. The ensuing tale unfolds as a captivating and cunning game of cat-and-mouse. However, who is the pursuer and who is the prey remains uncertain?
The main characters, played by Eve Myles from Broadchurch and Gabrielle Creevy known for her role in BBC’s In My Skin, are both featured prominently in The Guest.
The Guest is coming this autumn to BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and BBC One Wales.
King and Conqueror
In late 2025, a captivating period drama set in the UK will air on BBC, featuring James Norton, known for his role in “Happy Valley,” portraying Harold of Wessex, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, famous for his time on “Game of Thrones,” taking on the role of William of Normandy.
As a history enthusiast, I’m thrilled about this epic tale that delves into the dramatic confrontation at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. This clash, with roots reaching back for decades, unfolds through the intertwined stories of two powerful dynasties, each striving for dominance across not just one, but two nations, and a turbulent sea that served as their battleground.
Norton stated that “King and Conqueror” was “a harsh portrayal” (according to Deadline), further noting that showrunner Baltasar Kormákur had a definitive vision regarding the tone and appearance, aiming to ensure it was not a polished, comfortable period drama.
King and Conqueror is coming to the BBC in 2025.
Film Club
Aimee Lou Wood, rising talent known for her roles in Netflix’s “Sex Education” and more recently “The White Lotus,” is set to deliver a delightful six-part romantic comedy. In this series, two friends, who share a passion for films, subtly express their deep affection for each other through movie references.
In this production, Wood takes on dual roles – both the author and leading actor – portraying Evie (Wood), a character who shares a film club with her close friend Noa (Nabhaan Rizwaan). Suranne Jones, famously known for her roles in Vigil and Gentleman Jack, joins the cast as well, playing the role of Evie’s offbeat and unconventional mother.
Film Club will air on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer later this year.
The Night Manager, season 2
The much-awaited comeback of the Tom Hiddleston-led spy series, as announced by BBC for its 2025 lineup (according to Hollywood Reporter), is generating immense excitement among viewers, who are eagerly looking forward to it.
It has been officially announced that Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role as Jonathan Pine, while Olivia Colman and Alistair Petrie are also expected to return in the upcoming episodes. The much-loved series is set to make a comeback for two fresh seasons, resuming its narrative eight years after the conclusion of the last finale.
In the UK, seasons 2 and 3 of The Night Manager will be broadcasted on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. On a global scale, these seasons will also be available on Prime Video.
The Cage
This recently introduced BBC drama, orchestrated by the creator of “The Responder,” Tony Schumacher, is characterized by the BBC as an intense, action-packed crime narrative unfolding in a casino environment in Liverpool. It features two remarkable protagonists who leave a lasting impression.
In this production titled “The Cage,” we find BAFTA-winning actress Sheridan Smith alongside Michael Socha from “Showtrial.” The talented Barry Sloane, known for his role in “House of the Dragon,” and Geraldine James from “Dope Girls” are among the supporting cast. Additionally, Julia Papp, who recently appeared in “Baptiste,” and Dave Hart from “The Responder” complete the ensemble.
Although the specific release date hasn’t been announced yet, we’ve already gotten a sneak peek, so we’re optimistic that it won’t be much longer before we can get our hands on it.
Unforgivable
The upcoming drama, freshly announced, boasts an impressive lineup of stars. Among them are Anna Maxwell Martin, whose current BBC murder-mystery is popular on Netflix, star of the series “Marcella”; Anna Friel, also known for her role in “Marcella”; Bobby Schofield, who has appeared in shows like “SAS Rogue Heroes” and “The Suspect”; and “Unforgivable”. This production also features writing by Jimmy McGovern, renowned from Time magazine, and direction by Julia Ford, recognized for “Showtrial”.
This imaginative story delves into the consequences and repercussions of a harmful action perpetrated by a family member.
Unforgivable will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two this year.
