7 new (and old) horror TV shows to watch this October

As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of all things supernatural and spooky, I must say that the list you’ve provided is nothing short of enchanting. Having spent countless hours delving into the mysterious world of witches and the macabre, I can wholeheartedly vouch for each and every one of these series.

Experiencing a terrifying movie is unmatched thrill, yet there’s something captivating about the gradual, nerve-wracking journey offered by horror TV shows, where fear is doled out in smaller doses and frequently escalates to a heart-pounding climax. Fans of this genre are spoiled for choice this fall, as platforms like Peacock debut new series and Netflix continues to house the majority of Mike Flanagan’s exceptional collection.

On the flip side, right now you can enjoy the latest season of the intriguing yet enigmatic horror series titled “From“, season 2 of Amazon’s psychological thriller “The Devil’s Hour“, and fresh episodes of Hulu’s “American Horror Stories“. Starting later this month, Hulu will also broadcast new episodes of “What We Do in the Shadows” when its final season begins.

If you’re looking for something different during your usual movie nights, there’s an abundance of thrilling TV shows to explore this season instead. Here are some chilling classics and recent hits that we’ve been enjoying for Halloween.

Teacup

According to Robert McCammon’s novel “Stinger”, the storyline of “Teacup” revolves around a diverse band of individuals who find themselves trapped on a rural farm in Georgia. A sense of unease pervades as an enigmatic figure in a gas mask marks the farm’s boundaries with a blue line. Let me caution you, crossing that boundary results in consequences that are best avoided.

Just premiered on Peacock, the James Wan-produced show titled “Teacup” is one of October’s most talked-about new series and has a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Right now, only the first two episodes are available, with two new ones being added every Thursday until the Halloween finale. This gives you ample opportunity to watch it up to date!

Hysteria!

You may glance at the summary for “Hysteria!” and perhaps lose focus when it talks about a gang of teenagers attempting to make their heavy metal band successful (some of us are still traumatized by “Metal Lords“), but I can assure you that this Peacock Original is worth your time and much more endearing than you might expect.

In the 1980s, the series “Hysteria!” takes place amidst the Satanic Panic, where some teenagers believe feigning Satanism is the key to gaining credibility as heavy metal enthusiasts. Starring an impressive lineup including Bruce Campbell, Julie Bowen, and Anna Camp, “Hysteria!” delivers a fun watch with a “Scream”-like atmosphere. Beginning on Friday, October 18, you can stream all eight episodes.

The Devil’s Hour

Starting this coming Friday, October 18, worldwide, the second installment of our Prime Video thriller series hits screens! The talented duo, Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, reprise their roles as Gideon and Lucy. Their task this time? Tracking down a slippery monster that has been causing havoc. In this season, Lucy’s personal life clashes with her professional one when an unexpected figure resurfaces. This season is set to shed light on several unanswered questions and enigmas from the first season.

Salem

There seems to be a shortage of truly terrifying shows centered around witches, and I must clarify that I adore the charming, comforting series like “Practical Magic” and “Hocus Pocus”. However, when it comes to the macabre, ominous side of witchcraft, the choices become rather limited. Some noteworthy examples include “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”, “Penny Dreadful” (particularly season 2), “Mayfair Witches”, “American Horror Story: Coven”, and “A Discovery of Witches”. But if you’re seeking something truly unsettling with superior writing compared to “American Horror Story”, then I would recommend giving “Salem” a try.

Even after seven years since it last aired, I can’t help but be captivated by it. If only it had been given a few more seasons, but I’m grateful for the three we have (and more than 30 episodes) to savor. The show, “Salem,” masterfully delves into the world of witches in the town bearing its name. These witches cleverly exploit the puritanical panic as a means to further an intricate plot aimed at conjuring the Devil.

Before

Among the series listed here, “Before” is the one yet to debut. However, it’s worth marking your calendar for this intriguing psychological thriller featuring Billy Crystal. Set to premiere on October 25th exclusively on Apple TV+, “Before” narrates the story of a child psychiatrist (portrayed by Crystal), who is grappling with the recent demise of his wife (Judith Light) and an unusual bond he forms with a troubled boy named Eli.

The Haunting of Hill House

Family angst, ghosts, and brilliant writing, The Haunting of Hill House remains not only one of the best horror series of all time but a prominent reminder of just how brilliant Mike Flanagan is as a creator. Then again, you can’t really go wrong with any Flanagan show.

If you’re not feeling up to watching Hill House, perhaps you might prefer to re-watch some other works by its creator instead. For instance, there’s always Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, or some of his fantastic films like Hush, Doctor Sleep, and Ouija: Origin of Evil. In my opinion, Hill House stands out as an exceptional piece of scary television. It’s truly remarkable and continues to be genuinely terrifying even upon re-watching.

From

Do you enjoy watching series that involve complex mystery puzzle-box plots, such as Lost, Teacup, and Yellowjackets? If that’s the case, then hop aboard the train to Fromville! This show, hailing from the same production team as Lost, offers a similar premise: a group of individuals who find themselves stuck in one location with no hope of escape. The series is called From.

Instead of being stranded on an isolated island, the inhabitants of “From” find themselves trapped in a remote, haunted township. Every evening, they’re pursued by terrifying creatures with no hesitation about maiming their victims. Now in its third season, “From” continues to improve, making it the perfect time for you to jump on board!
