For nearly eight seasons now, “The Neighborhood” has graced our screens on CBS. Starring Cedric the Entertainer as Calvin Butler and Max Greenfield as Dave Johnson, this sitcom introduces us to an unlikely friendship between neighbors. The story unfolds when the Johnson family moves into a predominantly Black neighborhood in Pasadena, California, with the Butlers living next door. Over the years, audiences have found themselves captivated by its charm, and it has recently been announced that the upcoming season will mark its conclusion.

In Season 7, numerous events occurred to progress the plot, setting the stage for several spinoffs. But as some of these plans were altered, it’s intriguing to see how the creators and writers will conclude things with many characters. Here are 7 storylines that require resolution before The Neighborhood reaches its end.

How the Butlers Are Managing Without the Kids at Home

In Season 7, characters Marty (Marcel Spears) and Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) Butler decide to leave their family home and settle in Venice Beach instead. A significant plot point in Season 8 revolves around Calvin and his wife Tina (Tichina Arnold), as they navigate life without their children, a theme that offers intrigue since it’s a common yet challenging aspect of growing up. The struggle many parents face when their kids leave home to start their own lives is an engaging subject for TV shows, as it represents a natural part of the lifecycle that many people find challenging.

It’s wise to emphasize this key point early in the upcoming episodes since it was a significant aspect from the last season. With Calvin and Tina having more leisure time than usual, the writers can delve into how they spend their newfound freedom. Some of that spare time could involve Dave bothering them with his charisma and amiable nature.

In the series, Calvin Butler’s relative, known as Crutch, will make an appearance. This means that Cedric the Entertainer will feature in the show and additionally function as an executive producer. It is important to clarify that Crutch is not the same character as Curtis, whom Morgan played as Calvin’s brother during Season 4.

Walking Back the Spinoff That Didn’t Happen About Malcolm and Marty Being Out of the House

Originally, a spin-off focusing on Malcolm and Marty in Venice Beach was planned but not taken up by CBS. This might imply that some plotlines from this spin-off could surface in Season 8. Notably, McKinney and Spears are both set to reprise their roles as series regulars.

To start off the show, Dave and his wife Gemma (Beth Behrs), along with their son Grover (Hank Greenspan), relocate to Pasadena. The main reason for this move is that Gemma accepts a position as principal at Walcott Academy. This move brings them all the way from the Midwest. Grover, being a student at the academy, develops and matures over the course of the series. A significant storyline could be his transition into adolescence.

Nearly every day, Dave seeks advice from Calvin, who, having raised two children himself, often provides the solutions Dave needs, albeit reluctantly. With Grover entering his teenage years, it’s likely that Dave will continue to lean on Calvin for guidance, as mischief is bound to ensue.

More Cultural Clashes

In this series, part of its charm comes from the lovable and kind-hearted nature of the Johnsons, while the Butlers struggle to understand why they are so appealing. The show employs a familiar theme where characters find themselves out of their comfort zone, as the Johnsons appear to be struggling in a community where they don’t quite fit in visually. However, Dave, who is both a skilled conflict resolver and a military veteran, brings his wealth of personal experiences navigating challenging situations to the table.

Greenfield and Cedric the Entertainer display a wonderful rhythm throughout the series as Calvin gradually grows fond of Dave. However, their interactions aren’t always smooth, and Dave tends to step out of line frequently. Yet, the show manages to hold its ground thanks to cultural misunderstandings, which have been a constant element for years. Therefore, viewers can anticipate more instances of this in the upcoming season finale.

Hopefully It Will Avoid Introducing Too Many New Characters

Over the course of 135 episodes, viewers have grown fond of both the Butlers and the Johnsons. It’s only fair to tie up some loose ends in their storylines. This season might see more unresolved stories for the Butlers due to their connection with “Crutch”, but that doesn’t mean other significant plotlines won’t be explored too.

The barbershop and its appearance are likely to recur at least once more, while Lamar, the character portrayed by Kevin Pollak as Dave’s father, is highly probable to make a reappearance. Few additional characters will be introduced, particularly towards the end of the season. For the show’s harmony, it’s crucial that every main character receives a satisfying conclusion for their storyline.
