7 most disturbing doll horror movies you don't want to watch alone

As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast with a hearty appetite for all things spine-tingling, I can confidently say that doll horror movies are the ultimate adrenaline rush. There’s something undeniably terrifying about an object meant to bring joy being twisted into a tool of terror.

I find the variety within the horror genre quite appealing, as it encompasses numerous sub-categories catering to various preferences. Among these, a sub-genre that resonates with many horror enthusiasts, including myself, are movies featuring haunted dolls.

Movies of this kind often revolve around malevolent toys or inactive items mysteriously gaining life, which then proceeds to instill terror by pursuing and tormenting humans. Given that toys are generally perceived as innocent playthings for children, the transformation into fear-inducing objects can be quite disconcerting. Frankly, the concept of lifeless objects coming to life is itself unnerving, contributing significantly to the suspenseful atmosphere. However, this doesn’t deter me from enjoying these spine-tingling films.

To put it simply, I’ve seen more than a few chilling doll horror flicks, and I’m excited to recommend some of the scariest ones I’ve encountered. Here’s a list of seven particularly unsettling doll horror films. If you’re not easily spooked, feel free to give these a try on your own. However, if you prefer company, I’d suggest inviting a buddy or two along. These movies are designed for shared viewing experiences.

Annabelle (2014)

Where to watch: Netflix, available to rent or buy on digital platforms

In simpler terms, “Annabelle” is a horror movie directed by John R. Leonetti with a script by Gary Dauberman. It acts as both a spin-off and prequel to the 2013 film “The Conjuring,” focusing on the haunted history of Annabelle, a cursed doll that brings fear and turmoil into the life of a young couple.

John and Mia are soon to welcome their first child as a couple. To celebrate this joyous occasion, John presents Mia with an antique porcelain doll called Annabelle, which they put in the nursery for their newborn. However, one fateful night, a satanic cult breaks into the home of John and Mia. In the chaos of the break-in, a cult member takes their own life while grasping the Annabelle doll, causing their blood to soak into it.

Eventually, the police arrived and ended all activities. However, several days later, the Form family started encountering a string of eerie and otherworldly occurrences centered around the doll. This was because when a cult member’s blood seeped into Annabelle, it enabled a demonic spirit to bond with the doll. Now, the malevolent doll is terrorizing John and Mia. To avoid losing their lives, they must figure out how to vanquish this evil toy before it’s too late. You can watch the official trailer right here.

Child’s Play (1988)

Where to watch: Tubi, Pluto TV, Peacock, available to rent or buy on digital platforms

Among all the eerie dolls out there, none can compare to Chucky from the “Child’s Play” series. This horror movie introduced us to the terrifying concept of a murderous, possessed doll. The story revolves around a single mother named Karen, who unknowingly gives her young son Andy a new doll as a birthday present, not realizing that the spirit of a vengeful killer dwells within it. As the Chucky doll starts displaying wicked actions and goes on a rampage, it’s up to Karen and Andy to thwart him before they become his next victims.

Dead Silence (2007)

Where to watch: Tubi, Peacock, available to rent or buy on digital platforms

In this horror movie titled “Dead Silence,” directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, the story unfolds around a ventriloquist who is falsely accused of kidnapping a child. Tragically, she is later killed by an enraged mob in her community. Prior to her demise, she casts a curse upon the town and mysteriously transfers her spirit into her dolls.

In time, a distraught widower goes back to his childhood home to explore the enigma surrounding his spouse’s sudden demise. As he uncovers more about the case, he discovers that his wife’s passing is linked to a slain ventriloquist. Over time, he encounters not only her malevolent spirit but also the puppets she used to possess.

Dolls (1987)

Where to watch: Tubi, Freevee, Pluto TV, available to rent or buy on digital platforms

As a thrill-seeker, I found myself immersed in a chilling tale titled “Dolls.” In this story, my character and a band of fellow adventurers find ourselves trapped by a relentless storm, seeking refuge in an eerie, isolated manor owned by an elderly duo. The peculiarity of this residence lies in its collection of vintage puppets and dolls that seem to give the place an unsettling aura.

Here are three other doll horror movies that will unsettle you, and where you can watch them:

  • The Boy (2016) – Paramount+, available to rent or buy on digital platforms
  • Saw (2004) – Peacock, Max, available to rent or buy on digital platforms
  • M3GAN (2022) – Starz streaming service, available to rent or buy on digital platforms
