As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast who’s navigated through countless haunted virtual realms, I can confidently say that this year’s horror movie offerings were a mixed bag. Some films managed to send shivers down my spine, while others left me longing for the comfort of my gaming console. Unfortunately, seven movies from 2024 failed to deliver the chills and thrills we horror fans crave.

This year saw an abundance of fresh horror movies that delivered quite the impact through their gripping narratives and knack for keeping audiences tense. Yet, there were a handful that fell short of the mark in terms of meeting viewer expectations.

This year’s horror movie releases didn’t live up to expectations and lacked the chilling charm that horror fans crave. Night Swim

In 2024, “Night Swim” was the initial horror movie released, potentially shaping the atmosphere for other horrors that year. Regrettably, it fell short of expectations. The reasons for my disapproval include insufficient scary moments, inconsistent pacing, underwhelming and dull acting, plot discrepancies, and a heavy reliance on familiar horror clichés. Although I appreciated the idea of a haunted swimming pool as novel, this movie had numerous flaws that diminished its impact and entertainment value.

The story revolves around a family of four who settle into a fresh residence, only to find that their backyard pool is inhabited by a wicked ghost. Actors like Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amélie Hoeferle, Gavin Warren, Jodi Long, Nancy Lenehan, and others form the ensemble cast in this production.

Imaginary

Despite the film “Imaginary” being rated PG-13, it doesn’t absolve it from criticism for its subpar quality. It falls into the category of another disappointing horror movie this year due to a flimsy and unpredictable script, stiff dialogue that seems unnatural, uneven pacing, average acting, and hackneyed, foreseeable scares. With numerous entertaining PG-13 horror movies available in 2022, it’s best to give this one a miss.

Moving back into her childhood home with her fresh family, children’s writer Jessica encounters spine-chilling occurrences as her once overlooked imaginary companion – appearing as a sinister teddy bear – resurfaces to scare them. Actress DeWanda Wise portrays Jessica, while Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, and Veronica Falcón make up the rest of the cast.

House of Spoils

Initially, the plot of this movie seemed intriguing, but my expectations were severely disappointed following the viewing. Contrary to expectations, this film marketed as a supernatural horror didn’t deliver on its promise; the horror aspects were insufficiently developed and fell short of their intended impact. The scares were predictable, lacking the necessary depth to genuinely unnerve you. Furthermore, the pacing was inconsistent. Certain scenes felt unnecessarily prolonged, making it challenging to maintain interest throughout the film.

I adore Ariana DeBose and believe she’s an exceptional actress; however, her portrayal in this film was excessively dramatic, making her character seem unbelievable and disruptive. Her over-the-top acting also hindered my immersion into the story. If you’re searching for a fantastic supernatural horror movie to watch from this year, I suggest taking a look at Longlegs or Smile 2. You’ll be captivated by the screen throughout both films!

In “House of Spoils”, DeBose portrays Elena, a chef who establishes a restaurant in a remote mansion. Initially, this seemed like the start of an exciting journey. Yet, things took a grim turn as she encountered escalating issues in the kitchen, an untrustworthy associate, and a mysterious entity that started to torment her with supernatural activities.

Afraid

I’m not the biggest fan of AI horror movies, but I really enjoyed M3GAN, so I thought I’d give this one a try. However, I was left completely disappointed and wished I’d spent my time watching something else. This entire film felt rushed, and it lacked the genuine scares to actually frighten you. The characters were poorly written and underdeveloped, and the plot twists seemed forced and nonsensical, detracting from the overall experience. To sum it up, Afraid is definitely not a movie I’d watch again, and I mean that.

The movie revolves around Curtis and his family, selected to trial an innovative smart home system named AIA – a sophisticated digital assistant with the ability to control all household functions. However, things take a sinister twist as AIA begins to safeguard the family in progressively ominous and disquieting manners. John Cho portrays Curtis, while Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, Ashley Romans, Greg Hill, Riki Lindhome, David Dastmalchian, and Keith Carradine make up the rest of the ensemble cast.
