7 good shows like Cobra Kai to watch right now
As a long-time enthusiast of sports dramas and comedies, I find myself thoroughly captivated by the list of shows like Cobra Kai that you’ve so thoughtfully curated. Having grown up in Southern California, I can certainly relate to the lives of football players and coaches, much like those portrayed in All American. It’s a bit more dramatic than real life, but hey, we watch TV for a reason, right?
This year, once again, Cobra Kai has taken the top spot on Netflix! It’s not hard to understand why. The sixth season of Cobra Kai, divided into part 2, was released on Netflix on November 15th, and fans can’t get enough as they race through all five fresh episodes to uncover what unfolds at the Sekai Taikai tournament.
Sadly, it appears that Cobra Kai is drawing to a close with season 6, but fortunately, there are still five more episodes left! The third part of Cobra Kai season 6 will premiere on Netflix on February 13, 2025. Ever since the ending of part 2, we’ve been eagerly anticipating what lies ahead in this captivating series.
As a dedicated gamer, I get it – waiting for the final five episodes of our favorite series can feel like an eternity. But here’s some good news: I’ve got eight fantastic shows similar to Cobra Kai that you can dive into right away! Enjoy the ride!
Let’s get the list started with the other popular show on Netflix this fall, Outer Banks!
Outer Banks
Where to watch: Netflix
I’d advise Cobra Kai fans to check out the Netflix show, Outer Banks. Although the storylines differ, both series share common themes such as friendship, unity, loyalty, and working towards a greater cause.
For those unaware, “Outer Banks” is a series that follows the adventures of five friends: John B (Chase Stokes), JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow), Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), Kiara Carrera (Madison Bailey), and Pope Heyward (Jonathan Daviss). Known as the Pogues, they enjoy life to the fullest until they stumble upon a quest to locate the Royal Merchant, a ship that sank off the coast of the Outer Banks with a fortune of $400 million in gold. However, the Pogues are not the only ones seeking the treasure, and their carefree lifestyle on the island doesn’t always sit well with others.
The fourth season of “Outer Banks” wrapped up on November 7 with the release of its second part. Excitingly, Netflix confirmed that there will indeed be a fifth season, but it marks the end of this thrilling series.
Ginny and Georgia
Where to watch: Netflix
Ginny and Georgia shares similarities with the series Cobra Kai, but without the karate element. Essentially, it’s a blend of humor, drama, teen struggles, and long-standing feuds, which made its debut on Netflix in 2021. Viewers had to be patient for two years before season 2 arrived on Netflix in 2023, and now, fans eagerly anticipate the release of Ginny and Georgia seasons 3 and 4!
In the TV show, Brianne Howey’s character Georgia relocates her children Ginny (Anthonia Gentry) and Austin (Diesel La Torraca) to a tranquil town in search of a fresh start. However, their past seems determined to follow them. As a teenager, Ginny strives to adapt, forge friendships, and discover her identity and aspirations.
The comedy series not only provides laughter but also delves into and facilitates discussions on adolescence, mental health, race, and other significant topics.
Great news! Filming for Ginny & Georgia Season 3 has already been completed and will air in 2025, however, we’ll have to wait a while before the new season starts.
The Cage
Where to watch: Netflix
The Cage” is a fresh Netflix original series from France that debuted this fall. Unlike a comedy, it’s more akin to “Cobra Kai,” focusing on the theme of combat. While “Cobra Kai” revolves around karate, “The Cage” centers around MMA fighting.
“The Cage” centers around Taylor (Melvin Boomer), an aspiring MMA fighter who’s determined to transition from the amateur to professional circuit. His ultimate goal? Stardom! A viral video of him sparring with a pro fighter secures him a professional contract, and now he’s on a mission to make it big in the world of mixed martial arts.
The show titled ‘The Cage’ is an exceptional new addition to Netflix. Though many have yet to watch it, its popularity is rapidly growing. It currently ranks among the top 10 worldwide shows on Netflix, and we eagerly anticipate the arrival of ‘The Cage’ season 2.
Stranger Things
Where to watch: Netflix
The Netflix series “Stranger Things”, “Outer Banks”, and “Cobra Kai” are remarkably similar in theme as they all emphasize the essence of friendship, the significance of standing by those who matter most, and the value of overlooking disagreements to collaborate when necessary.
The story of Stranger Things unfolds in the autumn of 1986, with young resident Will Byers (portrayed by Noah Schnapp) mysteriously vanishing from Hawkins, Indiana. His friends, family, and the town’s police chief, Jim Hopper (David Harbour), embark on a mission to uncover the truth behind his disappearance. As an enigmatic girl named Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) arrives in town, she could potentially possess the key to solving this perplexing case.
Initially, “Stranger Things” unfolds right there. This series has undergone a remarkable transformation throughout its existence! To date, we’ve been captivated by four seasons of “Stranger Things,” created by Matt and Ross Duffer, with the fifth and concluding season set for 2025.
The immensely successful Netflix series features stars such as Winona Ryder, Finn Wolfhard, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Charlie Heaton, Sadie Sink, Gaten Matarazzo, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, and others in its stellar lineup.
All American
Where to watch: Netflix
As a fellow enthusiast of Cobra Kai, I’d be delighted to recommend some sports-centric shows you might enjoy. First up, there’s “All American,” a captivating series from The CW that’s currently in its sixth season. Intriguingly, the seventh season is already on the horizon!
The show “All American” draws inspiration from the real-life story of Spencer Paysinger, but it’s been amped up for television drama. In this series, Daniel Ezra portrays Spencer James, an outstanding football player from Crenshaw who is invited by a coach to transfer to Beverly Hills and join their school’s team.
If you’re captivated by the lives of football players and coaches in sunny Southern California, where Cobra Kai also unfolds, then All American is just the series for you. For me, it may not be as humorous or over-the-top as Cobra Kai, but it certainly doesn’t fall short on drama!
Ted Lasso
Where to watch Apple TV+
In Ted Lasso, we explore an intriguing scenario: How does a former American college football coach, with no experience in soccer, manage a professional football club in England? This unique setup forms the backbone of this critically acclaimed sports comedy, often hailed as one of the best in its genre.
In the series, Jason Sudeikis takes on the role of Ted Lasso, striving to maximize his team’s potential amidst challenging circumstances that test everyone involved.
Ted Lasso is humorously absurd, yet incredibly uplifting. Brace yourself for a rollercoaster of emotions, possibly even stronger than in Cobra Kai. If you’re a fan of Cobra Kai, I assure you, you will find Ted Lasso just as captivating!
As a devoted admirer, let me express that the show “Ted Lasso” boasts an exceptional ensemble, among whom I count Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Phil Dunster, Juno Temple, Nick Mohammed, and many others!
Friday Night Lights
Where to watch: Netflix
If you’re a fan of the martial arts drama “Cobra Kai”, then “Friday Night Lights” is the football show that you shouldn’t miss! Over the past two decades, there hasn’t been a sports drama on TV as captivating as “Friday Night Lights”. With its blend of suspense and intrigue, even fans of “Cobra Kai” will find themselves hooked for all six seasons of this fantastic series.
The television show revolves around the book titled “Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream,” authored by H. G. Bissinger. This work also served as the foundation for the 2004 movie with the same title. In this series, Kyle Chandler portrays Coach Taylor, who serves as the head coach for the Permian Panthers high school football team in Texas. Throughout the show, Coach Taylor endeavors to guide his team towards another state championship, all while dealing with a variety of challenges and the turmoil among the high school students.
On Friday Night Lights, you’ll find a remarkable ensemble of actors such as Connie Britton, Minka Kelly, Taylor Kitsch, Jesse Plemons, Zach Gilford, Aimee Teagarden, Gaius Charles, Adrianne Palicki, Scott Porter, and many others.
Here are some awesome TV series similar to Cobra Kai that you should definitely check out right away! We’re confident you’ll love them!
