7 Buffy Plotlines We Hope the Reboot Will Finally Resolve
Approximately two decades since the final episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” there’s exciting news: The beloved series is coming back on Hulu with a revival show! Instead of focusing on Buffy Summers, this time around we’ll meet a new Slayer named Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Sarah Michelle Gellar will return to her iconic role as Buffy and serve as a producer. A pilot for the series has been ordered, with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao at the helm and scripts penned by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, there’s high anticipation that the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot will get a series green light.
As the new Slayer takes center stage, the show aims to resonate with old fans’ love for supernatural intrigue and address any unresolved plot points. At present, Gellar is the only confirmed original cast member reprising her role, but we can anticipate other “Buffy” actors joining in as well. Although some storylines provided a satisfying conclusion in 2003, they’ve left us with intriguing questions now that the show is back in action.
7. What Buffy Did After The Finale
Is She Still Dating The Immortal?
The upcoming reboot of the show will need to explore what Buffy’s life has been like after Season 7, as the series finale left her with a small smile and a hopeful outlook. Faith questions Buffy about her new role, saying “You’re not the chosen one anymore; you have to live as an ordinary person. How does that feel?” and Dawn asks, “Yeah, Buffy, what are we going to do now?” The series ended on a fitting note, but there is now curiosity about what Buffy has been up to in the last 20 years.
As a devoted film fan, I’ve always been captivated by the tales of Buffy and Angel. Following Buffy’s epic journey, it was intriguing to learn that a year later, Angel carried on with some tantalizing updates about his life. Rumors swirled that he had ventured to Italy and found himself in a new romantic entanglement with The Immortal, an age-old adversary of both Angel and Spike. A fleeting glimpse of this relationship was hinted in Angel’s season 5, episode 20, “The Girl In Question,” where it was undeniably clear that the actress playing Buffy was not Sarah Gellar.
However, the season 8 comics, penned by the mastermind behind the series, Joss Whedon, swiftly debunked this romance as a jest in issue #1. As we eagerly anticipate the reboot, the creators will have to grapple with the complexities of Buffy and The Immortal’s relationship.
6. Does The Watchers Council Still Exist?
The Council Was Blown Up In Season 7
The finale of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series introduced a significant shift: any Potential Slayer would now become a Slayer, thereby ending the long-standing tradition of only one girl worldwide battling evil. This development raises an interesting point – who will teach these new Slayers? Although Rupert Giles survived the series, he’s just one individual. Buffy had a council backing her, but they were largely inactive throughout the series when it comes to assisting her directly.
In Buffy’s fight against The First Evil, the Watcher Council suffers a bombing, leaving their extent and number unclear. It could be they have enough members to train the newly-minted Slayers, or there might not be enough left in their ranks. It’s worth noting that Angel season 5 showed Andrew being tutored by Giles; however, it’s questionable whether these two could manage an entire generation of new Slayers on their own.
5. Are Angel & Spike Still Alive?
The Pair Ended Facing Off Against An Army
Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of characters like Angel and Spike, as their reappearance would not only bring them back into the presence of Buffy but also provide answers regarding the events following the cliffhanger ending of Angel’s fifth season. Just as Buffy concluded in a fitting manner, with its characters persistently battling against overwhelming obstacles, so did Angel. Post defeating The Circle of the Black Thorn, Angel, Spike, Gunn, and Illyria found themselves with an army and a dragon at their disposal, ready to engage in another fierce battle.
In the upcoming series, we’ll undoubtedly delve into the characters’ destinies. Yet, reprising their roles presents a conundrum – they must appear as they did in 2004 given their vampire status, yet time has taken its toll on our beloved actors. A possible workaround could be that Angel or Spike, having fulfilled the Shanshu prophecy, were transformed into humans.
An alternative scenario could be that they were transported to a netherworld where time moves quicker than our world. In this universe, even though vampires age extremely slowly, as demonstrated by characters like The Master and Kakistos, spending 20 years in the netherworld might explain their apparent aging compared to when they last showed up.
4. The Status Of Slayers In The World
An Unknown Number Of Potentials Were Turned Into Slayers
In the final episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” every Potential Slayer obtained the powers of a Slayer. However, the number of Potential Slayers that existed before or at what age a new generation might acquire their powers is never clarified. If there are multiple generations of Slayers with superpowers, it would significantly impact the world and cannot be ignored by the new show.
3. How Powerful Is Willow?
Willow Overcame Her Addiction To Magic
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my thoughts on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” season 6. This season, often criticized as the weakest in the series, takes an intriguing turn with Willow’s struggle against her magic addiction. However, this metaphor for addiction seems to unravel slightly when Willow seemingly overcomes her addiction by simply indulging more in her magical abilities the following year.
The climax of her arc comes when Willow casts a powerful spell to bestow all Potential Slayers with their own power. In that moment, her hair turns white, and she’s enveloped in an otherworldly glow – a stark contrast to her former dark, veiny appearance as Dark Willow.
If Alyson Hannigan reappears in the series, the nature of her magical abilities might raise intriguing questions. By the conclusion of the series, Willow appears to have mastered her magic completely and is more potent than ever before. However, if she comes back as an extremely powerful witch, it could potentially dilute the tension in the new show, as every challenge might seem solvable by merely summoning Willow.
2. What Happened To The First?
Buffy Never Defeated Her Final Villain
In the future, there’s a possibility that the antagonist from seasons 3 and 7, known as The First Evil, might reappear. First introduced in season 3, episode 10 “Amends,” The First served as the main villain in season 7. Although The First’s army was eliminated, there is no clear sign that they were truly vanquished. Moreover, a method to overcome The First has never been presented. Given that The First aims to annihilate the Slayer bloodline, it seems implausible that they would cease their operations, particularly after all Potential Slayers have received their powers.
1. Dawn’s Status
Michelle Trachtenberg Passed Away In 2025
The challenging aspect that the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” remake may encounter is the fate of Dawn, as Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn, sadly passed away at 39 years old in 2025. Gellar mentioned during the reboot that they would find a suitable way to address Dawn’s character, stating, “We’ll come up with something. We’ll handle it appropriately.
It seems quite plausible that Dawn has passed away, and the series may choose to honor her memory and Trachtenberg in a fitting manner. Her death might cause Buffy to hesitate when it comes to mentoring a new Slayer, potentially serving as a significant plot element. Given the skillful creative team and Gellar’s involvement as a producer, I am confident that Buffy the Vampire Slayer will strike an appropriate balance of respect and reverence towards both the character and the actress.
