For years, Netflix has been the leading streaming service. Many people still remember when Netflix first started, sending DVDs through the mail. Now, it’s famous for creating popular original films and hit series like Stranger Things (2016-2025), Squid Game (2021-2025), and Wednesday (2022-Present).

Despite its huge popularity, Netflix has developed a bit of a mixed reputation. While shows often become hits, there can be long waits between seasons. At the same time, Netflix is quick to cancel shows, even those with potential. In 2025 alone, they canceled over twenty series, and some were cut short before they could really find an audience.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is an Amazing Video Game Adaptation

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft (scheduled for release in 2024-2025) is a new animated series based on the popular Tomb Raider video games. This version takes a different approach than previous adaptations, such as the Angelina Jolie movies from the early 2000s, by telling a completely new story that still feels connected to the games themselves.

This series picks up where the 2018 game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, left off—concluding the story arc known as the Survivor Trilogy. It continues Lara Croft’s journey, building a link between the rebooted trilogy and the original Tomb Raider games that began in 1996.

As a big fan, I was really impressed with how much this show helped Lara and her friends grow as characters – they built a fantastic support system around her. It’s incredibly frustrating that Netflix canceled it after only two seasons, though. I’ve heard the new Tomb Raider series Amazon is working on might have played a part in the decision, but honestly, whatever the reason, it’s a real loss. There was so much potential left to explore!

No Good Deed Only Lasted One Season

The 2024 series, No Good Deed, began streaming on December 12th. It centers around three families all trying to purchase the same stunning Spanish-style house, each believing it will solve their problems. As they compete to buy the property, the sellers come under scrutiny, leading viewers to wonder if they’re concealing a secret.

Critics and viewers alike loved the series when it first came out, and it featured fantastic actors like Taraji P. Henson (known for Hidden Figures and Empire) and Lisa Kudrow (Friends, The Comeback). Unfortunately, the show was put on hold in July. While it wasn’t officially canceled, it’s unlikely to return, which is disappointing because it was a really funny show.

The Recruit Started Off Strong But Didn’t Last

The Netflix series The Recruit premiered on December 16, 2022, and quickly became popular with viewers. It centers around Owen Hendricks, a CIA lawyer who is blackmailed, and the perilous situations he faces as the threat escalates across different agencies and international borders.

The second season of The Recruit faced major setbacks due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Filming was significantly delayed, and the season ended up with only six episodes instead of the planned eight, premiering in January 2025. Sadly, despite the long wait, viewership numbers weren’t high enough for Netflix to renew the show for a third season.

Territory was Netflix’s Attempt at a Yellowstone Clone

Territory is a 2024 Australian series that debuted on Netflix on October 24th. It’s set on Marianne Station, a massive cattle ranch in Australia’s Northern Territory, and follows the Lawson family who own it. Because the station is so valuable and powerful, it attracts both competitors and criminals.

The show Territory had one season consisting of six episodes. While critics generally liked it, it didn’t attract a huge audience. Despite this, plans were initially made to create a second season, but Netflix decided to cancel it after just one season in February.

That ’90s Show Was an Incredible Sequel Series

That ’70s Show, which aired from 1998 to 2006, was a hugely popular sitcom at the turn of the millennium. Its success led to a short-lived spin-off called That ’80s Show in 2002, though this new series, set in San Diego, didn’t follow the original characters or storyline and was canceled after only one season.

That ’90s Show (2023-2024) is a sequel that fans of the original series had been wanting. It centers around Leia Forman, the daughter of Eric Forman and Donna Pinciotti. The story unfolds during the summer of 1995, when Leia spends time with her grandparents, Kitty and Red Forman, in Point Place, Wisconsin.

Even though the show received generally positive feedback, Netflix ended it after two seasons, releasing the second season in two parts during 2024. Kurtwood Smith, the actor who plays Red Forman, has hinted that another streaming platform might revive the series.

The Residence Had a Fantastic Premise

Coming in 2025, The Residence is a comedic crime drama starring Uzo Aduba (known from Orange is the New Black) as Cordelia Cupp, a detective tasked with solving a murder at the White House. The story begins after a state dinner when a body is discovered. Detective Cupp navigates the intricate world of White House staff – from the most visible figures to those working behind the scenes – to uncover the truth. She quickly finds that the complicated connections between the staff are a major obstacle to her investigation.

The show was initially promising, building on the success of Kate Andersen Brower’s book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House. Brower is a well-respected author who has written four books detailing life inside the White House, providing a rich foundation for the series. However, despite backing from Shondaland, a solid source story, and generally positive feedback, Netflix announced in July that the show wouldn’t be renewed for another season.

Boots Delivers a Powerful Story That Rubbed Some People the Wrong Way

Despite only premiering on Netflix on October 9, 2025, the show Boots has already been canceled – a surprising move considering it’s scheduled to run through 2025. The cancellation was announced on December 12th, just two months after its debut. Boots is based on Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine, and is set in 1990.

The show centers on Cameron Cope, a teenager keeping his sexuality hidden. Set in the 1990s, this secrecy was understandable, as acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals wasn’t as widespread as it is now. The story goes further by showing what happens after Cameron enlists in the Marines with his best friend. Because the U.S. military didn’t allow openly queer recruits at the time, Cameron had to be especially careful to keep his secret safe.

The show Boots was well-received by both critics and viewers, who praised Cameron’s compelling story. It earned a rare 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences, despite being canceled quickly by Netflix. While the show was popular, it drew criticism from conservative groups who labeled it as ‘woke’ and accused it of pushing a particular agenda, which likely contributed to its cancellation despite its quality.
