’60 Minutes’ calls out Paramount Global over executive producer departure
“No one here is happy.”
60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley concluded Sunday’s broadcast by honoring outgoing executive producer Bill Owens, who stepped down recently due to escalating corporate influence on the esteemed program.
Tuesday was the day Bill chose to resign,” Pelley stated. “It was tough not just for him, but for all of us as well. However, he made this decision with our interests in mind, and yours too.
Owens was resisting attempts by Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS, to reach a $20-billion settlement over a lawsuit filed by former President Trump concerning an October interview on the network with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. Currently, Paramount Global is seeking government approval for a merger agreement with Skydance Media, owned by David Ellison.
Paramount started managing our content differently,” Pelley informed viewers during a segment titled “The Last Minute.” “No story has been censored, but Bill feels he’s lost the autonomy essential for unbiased reporting.
As a film critic, I’ve always found it refreshing when “60 Minutes” team members are open about their internal conflicts within the network. However, voicing discontent concerning corporate issues before a global audience of millions during the broadcast is an uncommon and striking move.
A representative for CBS said Monday that the company had no comment on Pelley’s remarks.
Based on a report from an unnamed journalist at the network, it appears that Shari Redstone, the majority shareholder of Paramount Global, has been requesting story outlines prior to their broadcasts in recent months. When questioned if any stories had been shelved thus far, the source replied, “Not yet.

The esteemed CBS news program finds itself in an unusual predicament, caught between a legal action by Donald Trump and the upcoming sale of its parent company, Paramount Global.
This week, it’s anticipated that the dispute between Trump and Harris over allegations of misleading editing in their interview will be handled by a neutral third party (mediator).
However, since its filing, “60 Minutes” has persistently delved deeper into the Trump Administration, with this week’s broadcast featuring a piece about proposed budget reductions and job losses at the National Institutes of Health, and the potential negative impact on medical research.
For a few more weeks, Owen, who remains part of the team, has always been vigilant about preserving the program’s autonomy.
If you’ve had the experience of putting in effort for a boss whom you respected, then you can relate to the enjoyment we’ve felt here, stated Pelley.
