Most storylines in Dragon Ball revolve around Goku getting stronger to defeat incredibly powerful foes – that’s what it often seems like, anyway. But if you look closer, Goku frequently needs assistance from his friends and family to win. He’s actually defeated far fewer enemies in a solo battle than the total number of villains he’s overcome.
Goku’s solo victories in Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and Dragon Ball Super – when he defeats enemies that no one else could – are particularly impressive. Although allies sometimes help with energy boosts or timely power-ups, the toughest villains Goku has beaten in direct, one-on-one fights aren’t always the absolute strongest throughout the entire Dragon Ball series.
Kid Buu (Dragon Ball Z Season 9)
As a huge Dragon Ball Z fan, I always thought Kid Buu was the scariest villain Goku ever faced. What made him so different from others like Frieza or Cell wasn’t that he wanted to take over the world – he just wanted to destroy everything! That made fighting him totally unpredictable and genuinely terrifying. Seriously, his ability to heal instantly, combined with how fast, strong, and tireless he was, made him unbelievably hard to defeat. He was a relentless force of destruction!
After a long and intense fight on the Sacred World of the Kais, Goku finally beat Kid Buu using a massive Spirit Bomb. While he needed energy from people on Earth to power it up, and Vegeta helped by having Dende use the Namekian Dragon Balls to restore Goku’s strength, Goku was ultimately the one who succeeded where everyone else had failed. This made it one of his most impressive wins, especially since Vegeta acknowledged he couldn’t do it himself.
Omega Shenron (Dragon Ball GT Season 2)
Okay, let’s talk about Omega Shenron. Now, whether you consider Dragon Ball GT fully ‘canon’ is another debate entirely, but there’s no denying this guy was a seriously powerful foe for Goku. He really felt like the ultimate villain of that GT arc, the Shadow Dragon Saga – honestly, none of the other villains in that series even came close to his level. The story explains he’s formed from all the negative energy built up inside the Dragon Balls themselves, and that gives him a crazy mix of abilities and just sheer overwhelming power. As far as non-canonical big bads go, Omega Shenron definitely delivered a memorable challenge.
Goku’s battle with Omega Shenron pushed him to his limits because Omega Shenron was incredibly powerful – stronger than anything Goku could handle in his Super Saiyan 4 form at first. Even with Vegeta transforming into a Super Saiyan 4 and joining the fight, they had trouble defeating him. Ultimately, Goku won by gathering energy from everyone across the universe for a massive Spirit Bomb attack. While many people contributed energy to the blast, only Goku could actually perform the technique, making him the one who ultimately defeated Omega Shenron.
Copy-Vegeta (Dragon Ball Super Season 3)
Goku’s toughest battles haven’t always been against world-ending villains. Copy-Vegeta was a strange case – he was an exact duplicate of Vegeta who mistakenly thought he was the original, and wanted to eliminate the real Vegeta to prove his identity. Created by a parasite called Commeson, this copy had all of Vegeta’s strength, memories, and fighting skills.
It was insane watching Copy-Vegeta! He actually surpassed the real Vegeta in power, which meant Goku had to fight someone who could almost match him – one of his best rivals, no less. The whole thing was weird because this Copy wasn’t going to last forever, and we didn’t really know how he came about. Luckily, Goku figured out that just brute force wouldn’t work; he needed to exploit the fact that Copy-Vegeta’s body was falling apart. It wasn’t his toughest fight physically, but beating someone with Vegeta’s strength is still a huge accomplishment for Goku, especially one-on-one.
Golden Frieza (Dragon Ball Super Season 1)
When the classic Dragon Ball Z villain Frieza reappeared in Dragon Ball Super, fans were thrilled. The excitement grew when he showed off his Golden Frieza transformation, revealing just how incredibly powerful he’d become. For the first time, Frieza had trained, unlocking this new form and reaching a level where he could even overpower Goku in his Super Saiyan Blue state. His natural strength was amazing, making him one of Goku’s toughest opponents since the original Dragon Ball Z series ended.
Goku finally started winning the fight against Golden Frieza because Frieza couldn’t control his powerful new form well enough. Frieza quickly ran out of energy, letting Goku take over. But just when Goku won, Frieza had Sorbet shoot him, and then destroyed the Earth with a massive energy blast while Vegeta stood by, talking instead of finishing Frieza himself. Luckily, Whis used his ability to rewind time, giving Goku another chance to defeat Frieza with a Kamehameha.
Kefla (Dragon Ball Super Season 5)
It’s notable that out of all of Goku’s toughest opponents he’s faced alone in the Dragon Ball series, only one has been another Saiyan. That Saiyan is Kefla, who was formed when Kale and Caulifla from Universe 6 fused using Potara earrings during the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super. The fusion created a powerful fighter who pushed Goku to his very best.
Goku was already tired from the Tournament of Power and having trouble controlling his Ultra Instinct when he faced Kefla. Kefla’s powerful attacks pushed him to use the technique again, and though it was difficult, he finally won with a flawless Ultra Instinct Kamehameha. Although Goku received help from his team during the tournament overall, defeating Kefla was entirely his own accomplishment, making it a particularly impressive solo victory.
Moro (Chapter 66 of the Dragon Ball Super Manga)
Moro is a relatively new villain in the Dragon Ball series, but he quickly became one of Goku’s toughest opponents. Unlike previous enemies, Moro was an ancient sorcerer known as the Planet-Eater who could steal energy from living things and even entire planets—making himself stronger while weakening others. His power to copy techniques and control energy made his storyline, the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, a particularly difficult fight for Goku.
Goku finally defeated Moro by mastering Ultra Instinct, but only after Moro had fused with the planet Earth. The battle forced Goku to push Ultra Instinct further than ever before, transforming him into a massive energy being. He ultimately destroyed Moro’s core, ending the threat, though it was a very narrow victory. While allies helped by lending their energy throughout the fight, Goku was the only one who could have ultimately delivered the final blow.
