6 Street-Level Marvel Heroes Set to Thrive in MCU’s Phase 7
It seems that Marvel may be adjusting its strategy for future Disney+ content. Instead of continuing the pattern of MCU shows that complement movies, there are plans afoot to utilize streaming platforms in a manner similar to how they did with Netflix in the past. Reports suggest that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is considering producing most of its Disney+ series centering around street-level characters.
Daniel Richtman shared news that Disney+ is planning to emphasize on earthbound, city-based heroes, similar to those seen in their previous Netflix series. They aim to reserve major events for theatrical releases moving forward. This strategy is logical because large-scale productions like “Secret Invasion” are expensive, while street-level shows can produce numerous seasons at a significantly lower cost compared to films. This approach aligns with Marvel Producer Brad Winderbaum’s earlier statements.
In the future, we’re focusing on different projects. We’re creating series that can be released annually, similar to TV programs… We’ve returned to a traditional television production model.
There’s plenty of characters to pick from, even beyond those who headline Netflix or have already been featured in Marvel productions. Fans are eager for more Disney+ series featuring certain characters from Phase 7, but there’s a condition – they must be street-level heroes and should not have appeared on TV before.
In simpler terms, this implies that the mentioned characters – Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Punisher, Cloak & Dagger, the Runaways, and Echo – will not be present. However, there are characters who have appeared in other shows but haven’t had their own television solo series as of yet.
6 Street-Level Marvel Characters Who Should Be Spotlighted in MCU’s Phase 7
Colleen Wing / Iron Fist
Among the divisive Netflix Marvel productions, there’s no denying that “Iron Fist” stood out. Spanning over two seasons, this show featured Finn Jones portraying Danny Rand, the titular superhero Iron Fist.
Although some criticisms emerged from individuals unfamiliar with the comic book character, there were valid concerns about the show falling short and not living up to its predecessors. Yet, when Iron Fist and Luke Cage joined forces, the series significantly improved in quality.
Considering the context, it could be more advantageous to have Danny Rand appear as a guest in a potential return of Luke Cage, while passing the Iron Fist mantle to Danny’s successor. The final season of Iron Fist ended with an unexpected turn of events.
In that particular season, Danny and Colleen formed an alliance. Eventually, Danny discovered that she was a relative of Wu Ao-Shi, the pioneer who vanquished Shou-Lao. This revelation led Danny to transfer the title of Iron Fist to Wing.
Watching Jessica Henwick reprise her role as Colleen Wing would be terrific. Making it even more exciting would be pairing her with Misty Knight, portrayed by Simone Missick, which would result in a team-up series featuring two powerful female heroes capable of dishing out some serious action. To top it off, having Rosario Dawson reprise her role as Night Nurse would add an extra layer of excitement. Clearly, something extraordinary is in the works!
White Tiger (Angela Ayala)
During the initial run of “Daredevil: Reborn“, viewers on Disney+’s Marvel Cinematic Universe got acquainted with Hector Ayala, also known as the White Tiger.
In a heart-wrenching twist, I found myself deeply connected to this character, yet his tale took an unfortunate turn when corrupt law enforcement claimed his life. Interestingly, the narrative also introduced his niece, Angela del Toro, a teenager at the time, who tenaciously pursued her uncle’s murder investigation and found herself in conflict with Muse.
There are whispers suggesting that Angela might take on the role of White Tiger in Daredevil‘s second season. Photos from the season’s filming show Camila Rodriguez, who plays Angela, wearing an outfit resembling the White Tiger costume.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but imagine how exciting it would be to see her character in the show “Daredevil.” However, what truly excites me is the prospect of her starring in her own series. Such a move would not only be thrilling for us fans, but also demonstrate that she has earned the chance to follow in her uncle’s footsteps. This could indeed be a strategic decision, opening up new avenues for storytelling and character development.
Black Cat (Felicia Hardy)
It’s quite possible that this event may never transpire, given the complications regarding Spider-Man’s rights. Yet, introducing Black Cat as a fresh street-level antihero in a Disney+ series could prove to be a massive success for their service. Black Cat has been speculated for Spider-Man films since Sam Raimi was working on his original trilogy.
It’s becoming tedious to keep waiting for her arrival, and it might be fitting karma for the character if a deal could be struck with Sony to introduce her into the Marvel Disney+ street-level universe, starring in her own series. Interestingly, Felicia has some captivating stories that are unrelated to Spider-Man.
Instead of searching elsewhere, delve into Black Cat’s 2021 Marvel comic series. Here, she teams up with her comrades for a significant heist, but encounters trouble with the Thieves Guild, once led by Gambit. There’s plenty of potential in Black Cat’s storyline if Marvel decides to separate her from Sony.
Hellcat (Patsy Walker)
Patsy Walker, also known as Trish Walker (Jessica Jones’s adopted sibling), has made appearances in Marvel Netflix productions before. In the third season of the show, she adopted the persona of Hellcat and assumed the role of the main antagonist.
In the thrilling finale of “Jessica Jones” season 3, I found myself in a tough spot, apprehending my best friend Trish. But little did she know, her destination wasn’t just any jail – it was the notorious Raft, housing supervillains.
What made this situation intriguing was watching Trish, as Hellcat, grapple with her perception of being the hero throughout the story. It wasn’t until she was handcuffed and facing charges that she finally came to terms with how far she had strayed from the right path.
A “Hellcat” series could serve as a refreshing comeback for Walker, and there are numerous characters from her comic book background who could join her in this series, including her previous comic book spouse, Daimon Hellstrom, whom Tom Austen portrayed in the relatively unrecognized Hulu Marvel show.
Blindspot (Sam Chung)
In the world of Daredevil, a number of secondary characters were introduced, including White Tiger as the primary newcomer in the first season, while characters like Swordsman also made appearances. A character with strong ties to Daredevil and who played a significant role in the Marvel Universe comic book saga is Blindspot.
Sam Chung, a Chinese gymnast who was secretly using an invisibility suit, operated as a street-level hero until Daredevil detected him using his radar sense. Daredevil then took him under his wing for training.
(This version maintains the original meaning but is written in simpler, more conversational language.)
He boasts a wealth of expertise in combating the terrorist organization known as The Hand, thereby introducing something fresh to Disney+ and potentially aiding in the return of Elektra to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)
In a tricky situation due to Sony holding the rights to Spider-Man and his entire cast, there’s one character who could potentially find a way out of this predicament. Similarly to how Marvel and Fox had rights to Quicksilver because he was both an X-Men and Avengers member, Spider-Woman may find herself in a similar situation.
Jessica Drew, often linked with Spider-Man since long ago, shared the screen in interconnected cartoons during the late 1970s. Nevertheless, her ties to Spider-Man in comic books have been relatively minor over the past few decades. Instead, she’s primarily known for her roles within SHIELD and the Avengers teams, making appearances in select Spider-Man team-ups.
In her role as a super-spy, she can share intriguing tales and at the same time act as a neighborhood protector with a lower profile. She’s close pals with Jessica Jones, opening up possibilities for a collaboration with an existing character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
