6 shows cancelled in 2024 we’re still salty about
As a long-time fan of quality television, I must say that 2022 has been quite a letdown for me. It seems like every week, another show I’ve grown fond of gets abruptly canceled without giving us a proper ending. And it’s not just me – my friends and I have started a support group called “Cancelled Shows Anonymous.
With a new year on the horizon, it’s common for us to reflect on the television series that bid farewell this past season. Some of these endings were more difficult to accept than others!
For this list, we’re looking at cancellations only, rather than shows that were given a final season order. It’s important to distinguish between the two. While being final seasoned hurts, cancellations tend to hurt more because the shows end on major cliffhangers with no resolutions.
Each of these series is either exclusive to streaming services or accessible on a streaming platform, and it’s unlikely that they will be removed from there in the near future. However, I always advise purchasing DVDs or digital copies of your preferred shows when possible, as you never know what changes the streaming platforms might make – yes, we’re still keeping an eye on you, Max!
Here are the six cancellations from 2024 that we’re still extremely salty about.
NCIS: Hawaii
“I can’t help but feel this CBS show didn’t get the recognition it deserved. I’d shout it from the rooftops every day if I could. What made the cancellation particularly painful was the rumors of a fourth, abridged season to conclude the storylines. Incredibly, the cast was all set for a midseason fourth season, only to learn alongside everyone else that their series had been axed. Not fair, CBS!
NCIS: Hawaii marked the debut of the first female-led NCIS series, and it truly excelled in its portrayal. The team dynamic was reminiscent of a close-knit family, with members offering mutual support. Jane Tennant, an accomplished team leader and mother, fostered an environment where her colleagues were empowered rather than dictated to. A significant aspect was the inclusion of an LGBTQ+ relationship, which resonates with modern audiences – Kacy wasn’t a flawless couple, but they communicated effectively, stood by each other, and strived for their relationship’s success, much like many real-life couples do.
We also can’t overlook Ernie. He was, by far, my favorite character. When rejected by a woman he liked, he accepted it and moved on. He was smart and funny at the same time. I want an Ernie in my life.
You can currently stream all three seasons of the television series, NCIS: Hawaii, on Paramount+. However, efforts continue to bring it back for more episodes.
KAOS
I’ve got to hand it to Netflix for breathing fresh life into Greek mythology! Instead of the typical dramatic retellings, they served up a hilarious comedy series that only added to the intrigue and frustration of those characters we know so well. To top it all off, they managed to assemble an exceptional cast, with none other than Jeff Goldblum stepping into the sandals of Zeus himself!
This show had great promise, blending humor, mystery, and suspense seamlessly. And let’s face it, who isn’t fascinated by ancient Greek deities? After all, they’re the basis for countless tales we know. However, the challenge for this production lay in its Netflix format.
Broadcasters frequently release large amounts of content, expecting audiences to immediately tune in. After only two months, Netflix determined that viewership for KAOS wasn’t strong enough and ended it after a single season. This raises the question of whether it’s worth investing time into new shows at all.
Our Flag Means Death
Max provided an engaging account of the narrative where a man, feeling disenchanted with society during the 18th century, chose an unconventional path. That man was Stede Bonnet, who ultimately crossed paths with notorious pirates such as Blackbeard and several other renowned sea robbers. Indeed, this series blends historical facts seamlessly into its storyline.
In this heartwarming drama-comedy, we were treated to a blend of delightful aspects, such as an engaging gay love story between Teach and Bonnet. Their romance challenged societal norms and sparked feelings that defied expectations. Yet, their journey wasn’t without its challenges, leading them to separate. The series ended on a note where there was still the potential for their reunion if a third season had been produced.
The show “Our Flag Means Death” had an opportunity to tie up some narrative threads, but this happened more by luck than deliberate planning. However, the decision to terminate one of its highest-rated series came unexpectedly, with no clear justification provided.
My Lady Jane
If you’re looking for an entertaining, playful, and only slightly historical show, “My Lady Jane” on Prime Video might be just what you need. It’s inspired by the book of the same name and presents a reimagined tale of Lady Jane Grey, also known as the Nine Day Queen.
How might things have turned out if Jane had refused her parents’ schemes instead? If there existed a realm of enchantment during the 16th century, what would it look like? And suppose Mary was compelled to acknowledge Jane’s ascension to the throne? This series presents answers to these hypotheticals, along with a heroine we can cheer on and a romantic tale that unfolds amidst adventure and combat.
For a single season, the series titled “My Lady Jane” streamed on Prime Video, but it was unfortunately cut short without warning, ending in a suspenseful cliffhanger. Unfortunately, even the book, despite its similarities, doesn’t fully resolve this dilemma since there were some modifications to the storyline’s original direction.
Dead Boy Detectives
Netflix, it seems, has a tendency to cancel shows after just one season, a pattern shared by other streaming services. At present, the series we’re focusing on is “Dead Boy Detectives“. This captivating show takes place in the realm of “The Sandman“, and tells the tale of two ghostly investigators who aid spirits in their journey to find peace. They team up with a young woman who can perceive the unseen, as she struggles to escape her own tumultuous life.
This show delved into several significant aspects of existence (including its end), exploring themes such as:
In my gaming world, the silver lining here is that The Sandman saga is still unfolding, which might pave the way for some familiar faces to return. Frankly, it’s a long shot, but with the latest updates from Neil Gaiman, there’s a glimmer of hope. It’s another captivating, otherworldly series that Netflix decided to let go of, leaving us fans hanging for less than satisfying reasons.
Quantum Leap
We conclude this post by mentioning another network series whose cancellation is painful – Quantum Leap. In this enjoyable comeback, Ben Song leaped through time using a device, resulting in Sam Bennett being trapped in the past. Despite Ben’s belief that he corrected the code, he found himself still stuck after finishing the initial sequence of loops.
The second season unfolded a tale encompassing grief, timeless love, and why certain spirits are intertwined. We were led to believe that Ben would return to his original time, but instead, we were left on the edge of our seats as both Ben and Addison found themselves trapped in an eternal moment! Now, we’re overflowing with curiosity.
The show didn’t receive a suitable time slot or sufficient promotion. Given that it was among the limited number of series airing fresh episodes during fall, due to the summer strikes, it could have become a top pick. However, it struggled to maintain its audience once other shows resumed broadcasting.
It’s fantastic news that you can stream Quantum Leap on Peacock! We’re really hoping for a concluding film to tie up the story and bring Ben and Addison back home. Ideally, this movie would be exclusive to Peacock – just a gentle suggestion, Peacock!
