6 popular scary movies released this year now streaming on Shudder
As a seasoned horror aficionado with over three decades of chilling experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that Shudder has once again outdone itself with its exceptional lineup of terrifying treats this year. From the unique perspective of “In a Violent Nature” to the eerie live broadcast of “Late Night with the Devil,” these films are not for the faint-hearted, but they’re certainly worth every scream.
Nowadays, it’s challenging to stay updated with all the video streaming platforms available. However, when it comes to horror films, Shudder stands out as a top choice, offering both popular and indie productions, particularly independent ones.
2021 has been an exceptional year for the horror genre, boasting numerous outstanding films that have gained significant critical recognition. It’s a thrilling period to be a horror enthusiast. However, with an abundance of movies to monitor, it can be challenging to stay updated. Fortunately, Shudder currently offers streaming access to several of this year’s top and widely debated terrifying films!
In a Violent Nature
Have you ever imagined experiencing a horror movie from the killer’s standpoint? That’s essentially what “In a Violent Nature” offers – it’s like watching a “Friday the 13th” film through Jason’s eyes. This film, too, boasts one of the most gruesome slasher movie killings on screen this year, which is quite remarkable. The movie received positive reviews from critics, and a sequel is already underway. If you typically avoid found-footage horror, I suggest giving this a try due to its distinctive approach.
Late Night with the Devil
In 1977, a live television broadcast during a late-night talk show experiences chaos. The movie recreates the events as if it were an old recording from that fateful Halloween night when one of the guests was a teenage girl who appeared to be possessed by a demonic spirit. Witty, amusing, and skillfully acted, it’s no wonder Late Night with the Devil has been one of this year’s most popular horror films.
Exhuma
This year, a chilling Korean horror flick titled “Exhuma” hit the screens, and it’s a must-watch if you’re into spine-tingling thrills. Initially, it was only available on VOD in the U.S., but fear not! Shudder now offers a chance to stream it. As the title suggests, this movie delves into the eerie events that unfold when an ancient grave is unearthed, revealing secrets long buried and their haunting consequences. If you’re a fan of “The Wailing,” I think you’ll find “Exhuma” right up your alley!
V/H/S/Beyond
As a die-hard fan, I can confidently say that among the series, V/H/S/Beyond, the seventh installment in the found-footage anthology film franchise, stands out as one of my favorites. This sci-fi-themed movie offers a fresh and innovative take on the segments, with filmmakers such as Kate Siegel, Mike Flanagan, and Justin Long contributing to its intrigue. The thrilling scenes range from chilling alien abductions to a nerve-wracking skydiving adventure, not forgetting the eerie doggie daycare that sends shivers down your spine.
Oddity
When a woman dies in mysterious circumstances, her twin sister springs into action to delve into the suspicious conditions surrounding her death. Dani (Carolyn Bracken) meets an untimely end one night at home, and suspicions immediately fall on her husband’s patient, as he works at a nearby psychiatric hospital. However, not all pieces of the puzzle fit together neatly. Darla (also portrayed by Bracken) is a blind, gifted psychic who operates a curio shop and employs an unusual technique to uncover the truth behind her sister’s demise.
Azrael
You might not have heard much about the movie Azrael, but it’s definitely worth watching, especially considering that it stars Samara Weaving, who has garnered significant attention with movies like Ready or Not, The Babysitter, and the upcoming Scream VI. In this film, Weaving portrays a woman who was once behind bars and is currently fleeing for her life to avoid being sacrificed by a cult of silent devotees.
