Four Lives
Back in 2022, I was totally hooked on this gripping three-act saga that swept the awards. It’s based on a chilling true tale about Anthony Walgate, Gabriel Kovari, Daniel Whitworth, and Jack Taylor – four friends who happened to be gay men. Tragically, they fell victim to the vicious serial killer Stephen Port between 2014 and 2015.
The show titled “Four Lives” is orchestrated by creator Neil McKay and concentrates on the family members of the victims, who relentlessly pursued justice despite police shortcomings. In this production, Maxine Pezzote portrays Sarah Sak, Walgate’s mother. On the other hand, Stephen Merchant plays Port in “The Outlaws“. The series further features Tim Preston, Jakub Svec, Leo Flanagan, and Paddy Rowan as its main characters.
Available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
Accused
In the 2012 second season of the BBC One anthology series, Smith is the lead actor portraying a character who is on trial, with scenes showing events that led to their accusation earlier on.
In this production, the actor assumes the character of Charlotte, performing alongside esteemed actors such as Olivia Colman, who later won an Oscar, Sean Bean known from “Game of Thrones”, Stephen Graham hailing from “Adolescence”, Anne-Marie Duff famous for “Bad Sisters”, and comedian John Bishop.
The series, originally from Time’s Jimmy McGovern, has been renewed in popularity among viewers following its addition to Prime Video.
Available to stream now on Prime Video and ITVX.
Cleaning Up
2019’s dramatic film features Smith portraying Sam, a man battling debt, substance abuse, and a contentious child custody case. As events unfold, he uncovers hidden financial information, resorting to the illegal practice of insider trading as a means to cope with his problems.
The movie titled “Cleaning Up” received significant praise upon its debut, boasting a high 92% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Last year, it garnered a fresh wave of fans when it became available on Netflix. However, it was later taken off the platform.
The show is produced by Mark Marlow and stars Jade Anouka from His Dark Materials, Ben Bailey Smith known for Andor, Uriel Emil from Casualty, and Robert Emms who appeared in Chernobyl.
Or more concisely:
The show, produced by Mark Marlow, includes cast members like Jade Anouka (His Dark Materials), Ben Bailey Smith (Andor), Uriel Emil (Casualty), and Robert Emms (Chernobyl).
Available to buy via Prime Video.
Gavin and Stacey
Amongst Smith’s notable characters, they portrayed Smithy’s (James Corden) sibling, Ruth or Rudi, in the cherished BBC sitcom that chronicles the lives of the main couple, Billericay and Barry, along with their circle of family and friends.
Originating from Corden and Jones, the series came to an end recently with a grand Christmas episode – surpassing all other scripted shows’ viewership records since 2002, including a reappearance of Smith in this special one-time return.
Additionally, the program features Corden, Jones, Matthew Horne, Joanna Page, Rob Brydon, and Alison Steadman in its stellar cast.
Or:
Apart from Corden and Jones, we have Matthew Horne, Joanna Page, Rob Brydon, and Alison Steadman gracing the show with their presence too.
Or:
Corden and Jones are not the only stars on this show; they share the screen with Matthew Horne, Joanna Page, Rob Brydon, and Alison Steadman as well.
Available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
No Return
In this ITV series, the character played by Smith is Kathy, a mother who is enjoying a peaceful vacation with her family on a beautiful Turkish beach. However, their tranquility is shattered when their son, Noah, is apprehended and imprisoned. As she navigates through a foreign legal system, Kathy embarks on a determined struggle to secure her son’s release.
First broadcast in 2022, the series “No Return” was created by Danny Brocklehurst from “Fool Me Once”. It features Michael Jibson playing Martin and Louis Ashbourne Serkis portraying Noah, who you might recognize from “The Kid Who Would Be King”.
Initially tackling the film’s heavy subject matter proved to be a mentally taxing experience for me. By the wrap, I was drained and emotionally depleted.
Available to stream now on ITVX.
