6 new scary movies and 1 mind-bending show releasing Halloween week

As a long-time horror enthusiast and someone who’s seen more ghostly apparitions than most people have seen daylight, I’m always eager for the spooky season to roll around. This year, October has been particularly promising with an array of new movies and series that are sure to send chills down my spine.

This week marks the last week of October, which means Halloween is just around the corner. For all the thrill-seekers and movie enthusiasts, it’s time to strategize your schedule to catch as many spooky new films as you can before we move into November.

Besides what’s mentioned already, the final episode of “Grotesquerie” will be aired this coming Wednesday, while the finale for “Teacup” is scheduled for Halloween day. “From” season 3 continues to air every Sunday evening, and the psychological thriller series “Before” can be found on Apple TV+ every Friday.

Amityville: Where the Echo Lives (Oct. 29, VOD)

Following her father’s passing, Heather takes up the role of a ghost hunter, seeking to establish contact with him beyond this world. Upon learning about this, a distressed woman implores her assistance in examining a residence that has been haunted for twenty years, an event that holds some dark secret within its history.

From the trailer preview, it appears that Where the Echo Lives seems to follow a common trend of film studios attaching the “Amityville” title to budget-friendly horror films in an attempt to boost viewership, without any connection to the original Amityville House being mentioned in the trailer or synopsis. Given that this movie is set for direct digital release, it’s not unreasonable to anticipate a less-than-extraordinary film experience. Adjust your expectations accordingly; you might just be delightfully surprised.

Time Cut (Oct. 30, Netflix)

In this delightful teenage horror movie, actors Antonia Gentry, previously seen in “Ginny & Georgia” on Netflix, Madison Bailey known for her role in “Outer Banks”, and Griffin Gluck famed from “Locke & Key”, team up. The film is penned by Michael Kennedy, who collaborated on “Freaky”, and directed by Hannah McPherson, who also contributed to the script.

The plot isn’t exactly a novel concept, featuring a teenager traveling back in time to save her sister from a vicious killer (similar plots played out in Totally Killer, Happy Death Day, and Final Girls), but it looks like a suitably fun thriller with a sci-fi twist, and it will make all of us ’90s babies feel old with its 2003 setting. The Avril Lavigne needle drop in the trailer was a nice touch.

The Exorcism (Oct. 30, Shudder)

In the previous year, Russell Crowe featured in a film called “The Pope’s Exorcist,” portraying Father Amorth, the Vatican’s primary exorcist who battled demons. This year, Crowe is set to return for another exorcism-themed movie titled… “The Exorcism“.

Starting this Thursday, the theater-released film “The Exorcism” will become available for streaming on Shudder. In this production, Crowe takes on a character battling addiction issues, portraying a tormented actor. As he gets involved in a horror movie and starts showing signs of instability during filming, his daughter grows concerned that he may be slipping back into his old vices. Chloe Bailey is also featured in the cast.

Don’t Come Home (Oct. 31, Netflix)

Make sure you don’t skip out on the upcoming Thai Netflix limited series this Halloween, tagged as “mind-bending” and “dark”. Titled “Don’t Come Home“, it’s a nail-biting mystery thriller about a young girl who vanishes after she and her mother return to their old family home.

In the narrative, the central house, often rumored to be haunted, goes by the name of Jarukanant house. To add authenticity and enrich the plot, they built a real mansion with a blend of Sino-European architectural elements for the film set.

Cellar Door (Nov. 1, VOD)

Would you take a house of your dreams for nothing, with the condition that you never enter the basement? This is the dilemma that John (Scott Speedman) and Sera (Jordana Brewster) encounter in an upcoming Lionsgate thriller coming to digital platforms this Friday. A peculiar real estate agent (Laurence Fishburne) presents them with an irresistible deal.

Who wouldn’t be tempted by a luxurious house such as this one? Yet, they must resist the urge to peek behind that door, especially when they discover that others have inhabited it before, and the realtor’s wife and daughter went missing under mysterious circumstances. After all, there’s an old saying about things that seem too good to be true.

This week also sees the arrival of some fresh horror flicks. One is the slasher film “He Never Left,” hitting limited theaters on Friday, followed by a Video-On-Demand (VOD) release on November 5. Another chilling offering is the vampire horror movie “Portraits” that will be available for VOD viewing starting from November 1.
