6 massive questions we still have after that eventful Death in Paradise finale: What next?
The BBC’s popular show, “Death in Paradise,” set in the Caribbean, has concluded another exciting season as the sun sets following a thrilling and action-packed season finale of series 14.
Unlike earlier versions of the show, this latest installment has raised more questions than it answered. In this week’s episode, the murder mystery was effectively solved by the new Detective Inspector, Mervin Wilson (played by Don Gilet). However, instead of tying up all loose ends, the series has left us with a fresh batch of mysteries. These include questions about Mervin’s family life and the uncertain futures of both Mervin and the Commissioner (Don Warrington). As we eagerly await the 15th season of Death in Paradise, let’s explore all the plot threads that need resolution.
Has Commissioner Selwyn Patterson gone for good?
Initially, it seemed peace had returned following Selwyn’s reinstatement, despite Sterling Fox’s flaws. However, unexpectedly, the Commissioner declined the offer to return…
After discussing matters with Mervin and close associate Catherine Bordey, Selwyn decided to visit his daughter, Andrina Harper. Will we witness him returning to his previous role when Death in Paradise resumes?
What to Read Next
Saint Marie wouldn’t feel the same without Selwyn, regardless of his professional role. Here’s to hoping that his departure is just temporary, and we won’t have to say goodbye permanently to this cherished original character.
Will Mervin meet his long-lost brother?
Mervin faced a fresh shock after solving his mother’s murder – he has a brother called Soloman.
With “Death in Paradise” concluding on such a suspenseful note, it’s speculated that Mervin’s mysterious sibling could play a significant role in season 15. However, will hard-headed Mervin eventually cross paths with his brother?
After taking pride in his roots and exploring places dear to Dorna on the island, it seems that hard-headed Mervin might eventually reach out to the other man. If this happens, we can’t help but ponder whether Soloman would be willing to meet Mervin – and if they could potentially have a harmonious relationship.
Who is Catherine’s mystery new beau?
Previously in the show, it was disclosed by the reliable mayor and tavern owner Catherine to Naomi and Darlene Curtis (played by Ginny Holder) that she has recently begun a relationship. They’re enjoying themselves, but she emphasized that “it’s still in its infancy.
Since we don’t have any recent news on this topic yet, will we meet Catherine’s boyfriend next time she appears, and is it going to be a new person or someone we’ve seen before?)
Since the first season, Catherine hasn’t experienced a genuine romance. The man she was courting, Aidan Miles (Adrian Dunbar), ended up being a murderer. However, could her fortunes in love have taken a turn for the better now?
Will lost soul Naomi embark on her own personal journey?
As Naomi Thomas (played by Shantol Jackson) consistently shines in her detective role, it seems her personal affairs require a bit of tending. An unforeseen encounter with ex-boyfriend Emmanuel (portrayed by Bobby Gordon) occurred, but Naomi found herself disappointed when she discovered he was involved with someone else.
Afterwards, Catherine proposed introducing her to her new partner’s son, yet Naomi refused, and since then, things have returned to a strictly professional relationship.
Regardless of whether a male character is present or not, it’s high time for Naomi to have her own narrative. She’s a powerful figure who merits being front and center, so perhaps the upcoming season will grant her a leading position. Here’s hoping it does!
Will Seb learn from his mistakes and thrive on the team?
In the role of a fresh recruit at Honoré police station, Sebastian Rose (Shaquille Ali-Yebuah), felt disheartened after failing to apprehend a suspect during surveillance, which made him question his abilities as an officer. Fortunately, a sincere conversation with Mervin helped Sebastian regain his confidence, empowering him to correct the situation and ultimately pass his probation period.
After seeing a more sensitive side of Seb that we’re not used to, could this be a stumbling block or an opportunity for growth? Despite his potential, it seems Seb may be advancing too quickly, much like Marlon Pryce (played by Tahj Miles) earlier in his career. Will Seb find his footing and excel in the role?
Will Mervin stay on Saint Marie?
Mervin’s decision on whether to fly back to London was left open-ended thanks to that cliffhanger.
In the real world, it’s confirmed that lead actor Don Gilmore is shooting new episodes this year, playing the character Mervin. However, the question remains: For how long might we see Mervin on screen?
Could the prospect of being closer to his mother and unresponsive friends in the UK potentially impact Mervin’s future plans? The island of Saint Marie seems to be in need of a permanent inspector, and it’s hard to envision another leadership transition occurring before Mervin has had ample time to establish himself as a beloved character on “Death in Paradise.
According to Selwyn, there’s more to Mervin’s story yet to unfold – let’s see how far his narrative continues.
Death in Paradise and its spin-off, Beyond Paradise, both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
