Even though we’ve seen a lot already, it’s likely The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is still keeping some surprises hidden, possibly including familiar characters from the video games. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie already has a great cast, and as production continues, it makes you wonder who else might appear in the story.
While the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie won’t feature characters like Donkey Kong, it will still include several popular faces from the Super Mario games, such as Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Yoshi, and Birdo.
The new Super Mario movie will also bring back some characters fans haven’t seen in a while. Wart, the villain from the original Super Mario Bros. 2, is set to return, along with some of his old helpers.
With so many characters already in the movie, there are plenty of possibilities for surprise appearances that haven’t been revealed yet. Fans are frequently speculating about characters like Wario, Fox McCloud, and Princess Daisy, but while they could show up, they’re probably not the most likely hidden characters.
Fryguy
Considering where the movie seems to be going, Fryguy would actually make a pretty fitting cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, even if he won’t be a major character. The trailers clearly show the casino scenes with Princess Peach and Toad, inspired by Super Mario Bros. 2, suggest this direction.
The game clearly features its main villain, along with his helpers – the Ninjis and Sniffits – and three of his powerful bosses: Birdo, Mouser, and Clawgrip. Given this, it’s likely the other two bosses, including Fryguy, will also be included.
In Super Mario Bros. 2, Fryguy appears as a living flame. Being made of fire, Mario and the other characters can’t harm him by simply jumping on him. Players must throw Mushroom Blocks to defeat him instead.
We might see Fryguy featured in the large casino battle hinted at in the trailers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The scene could quickly show Princess Peach and Toad using objects around them to defeat this fiery enemy.
Tryclyde
Another boss from Super Mario Bros. 2 who hasn’t been mentioned is Tryclyde. Throughout the game, Mario and his friends encounter Cobrats – snakes kept in jars. At the end of World 2, players face Tryclyde, a large, three-headed Cobrat that breathes fire. Similar to battling Fryguy, you have to attack Tryclyde from a distance while dodging its fireballs.
Tryclyde stands out from most enemies and bosses in the Super Mario universe because of its strong fantasy-inspired design. This gives The Super Mario Galaxy Movie a chance to introduce a genuinely scary creature as a fun surprise for viewers who haven’t played Super Mario Bros. 2 and aren’t familiar with this intimidating character.
Dino Piranha
While the game clearly pays homage to classics like Super Mario Bros. 2 and other older Mario titles, it seems Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel are the main inspirations. Because of this, we can expect to see original characters and bosses from those games appear. The Megaleg is already confirmed, and other bosses like Dino Piranha might also make an appearance.
Dino Piranha, a powerful, dinosaur-inspired version of the Piranha Plant, is the first boss players face in Super Mario Galaxy. He mainly attacks with, and is vulnerable to damage from, his club-like tail. As the initial boss, Dino Piranha is an important character in the Mario series, making him a good candidate to reappear as a cameo or even a future opponent for Mario.
The movie has hinted at the appearance of Dino Piranha. Fans spotted his design on a wall inside Wart’s casino in the latest trailer, suggesting he’ll be one of the villains Princess Peach and Toad face.
Guppy
In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario encounters an orca named Guppy while exploring the water levels, Sea Slide Galaxy and Deep Dark Galaxy. Guppy insists he owns the ocean, and Mario has to win a race against him twice to get him to move aside.
The new movie is likely to feature planets from across the series, and it’s possible we’ll see an underwater world. If that happens, Guppy, a character known for his confident and playful attitude, could make a cameo appearance and add some humor to the film.
It makes perfect sense that Mario and Luigi would explore underwater environments in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The film is already including Frog Luigi, a water-based form from Super Mario games, so an underwater setting feels natural.
Professor E. Gadd
In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Bowser Jr. will use a special paintbrush called the Magic Paintbrush – the same one he first used in the Super Mario Sunshine video game. This paintbrush was originally created by Professor E. Gadd, a clever scientist who also helped Luigi battle ghosts in the Luigi’s Mansion games.
The movie trailers show the Magic Paintbrush is key to Bowser Jr.’s abilities, letting him transform and build things. Because of this, some fans think the film might include a surprise appearance by the Paintbrush’s creator, who could potentially help Mario and Luigi defeat its power.
Tatanga
With Wart appearing in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, fans are hoping to see another obscure Mario villain, Tatanga, make an appearance. Like Wart, Tatanga hasn’t been seen in a Mario game for over thirty years. He first showed up in Super Mario Land, where he was portrayed as a purple alien who kidnapped Princess Daisy and took over her kingdom of Sarasaland.
Tatanga, who flies around in a UFO, serves as the final boss of Super Mario Land, and an early boss that Mario has to defeat in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, where Wario is the main villain. Tatanga never returned again, but his absence from the franchise could soon end, due largely to the movie franchise’s willingness to include obscure Easter eggs, not to mention the galactic setting.
Tatanga, the first villain in the Super Mario series to come from outer space, would be a great addition to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. He could appear as an unexpected enemy during Mario’s pursuit of Bowser Jr.
