50 Years Later, Superman and Spider-Man Are Finally Crossing Over Again

As a huge fan, I’m so excited about the upcoming team-up between Superman and Spider-Man! They’re the most popular heroes from DC and Marvel, and it’s going to be an epic crossover in 2026. It’s all to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their very first meeting. Back in 1976, DC and Marvel joined forces for Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man: The Battle of the Century, which was the first time these two publishers ever crossed over their characters. That original story really kicked things off and became a huge moment for comics, and both DC Comics and Marvel Comics are planning a big celebration! They’ll be reprinting the original stories *and* releasing new crossovers, which is fantastic news for all of us fans.

Okay, as a lifelong comic book fan, this is HUGE news! DC just dropped the bomb that they’re officially joining forces with Marvel for some seriously cool team-ups. We’re getting comics starring both Spider-Man and Superman! In March 2026, DC will publish Superman/Spider-Man #1, and then Marvel will follow up in April 2026 with Spider-Man/Superman #1. They haven’t announced who’s writing and drawing these yet, but each comic will have brand new, original stories bringing these two icons together. But that’s not all! On January 7, 2026, DC is releasing Treasury Edition 50th Anniversary of Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man #1, which is a reprint of that classic story from 1976. And if that wasn’t enough nostalgia for you, on February 4th, DC and Marvel Present: Superman and Spider-Man Treasury Edition #1 hits stores, reprinting Marvel Treasury Edition #28 – a follow-up story from 1981 that’s been out of print for forty years! I can’t wait!

DC and Marvel Crossover History

DC Comics

Although DC Comics and Marvel Comics are famous rivals in the comic book world, they’ve also teamed up for several crossovers. Back in 1982, they released both Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk and The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans. Then, in 1996, when the comic book market was struggling, they published DC vs. Marvel, a series that matched up many of their most famous heroes and villains. This led to the creation of the Amalgam Universe, which blended characters from both companies. The last significant team-up from this era was JLA/Avengers, which brought the two iconic superhero teams together and was published between 2003 and 2004.

After twenty years, DC Comics and Marvel Comics teamed up for Batman/Deadpool, released in September 2025. The series also included extra crossover stories featuring characters like Wonder Woman and Captain America, John Constantine and Doctor Strange, and Ms. Marvel and Static. This makes it likely that the upcoming Superman and Spider-Man crossover will also have additional stories, or could even bring back characters from the earlier Amalgam Comics event, like Spider-Boy – a combination of Spider-Man and Superboy.

Although DC and Marvel fans frequently compare the two companies, there’s actually a lot of shared ground between them. Many of the artists and writers who work on these comic books and films are fans of both publishers, leading to quite a bit of talent moving between the two. A prime example is James Gunn, who directed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and now leads the entire DC Universe, with projects like Superman, The Suicide Squad, and Creature Commandos under his belt. While a team-up between Superman and Spider-Man on the big screen seems unlikely – or any DC/Marvel crossover outside of comics – the fact that this kind of collaboration is happening at all is something to appreciate.
