House of Guinness, the new series from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, quickly became the most-watched show on Netflix this week. But what’s the reaction from viewers in Ireland?
1. Bad Irish accents do Irish heads in
Fortunately, the majority of the actors are Irish, and James Norton did a wonderful job learning the accent. He was, reportedly, very worried about facing harsh criticism. Luckily, that didn’t happen.
2. No sandwiches at a wake?
The very first scene, showing the gathering after Sir Benjamin Guinness’s funeral, surprisingly had no sandwiches. It’s unusual not to have sandwiches at an Irish funeral; food is a significant part of these wakes. Sandwiches are a classic offering, served with whiskey, tea, and – of course – maybe even a pint of Guinness. As Irish comedian and singer Garron Noone (@Garron_music) pointed out in his critique of the episode: “I’ve deducted a few points there.”

3. A brawl, naturally
It only takes three minutes and 45 seconds for someone to yell: “Free Irish from the English!” and a huge fight to break out at the funeral. “Very true to the culture,” jokes the funny Garron.
4. Guinness isn’t black
Don’t worry! The way Guinness makes its beer results in a surprisingly deep red color, which you can see if you hold it up to the light. So, despite what you might hear – people often ask for ‘a pint of the black stuff’ at pubs – it’s not actually black!
Currently, over 10 million pints of Guinness are sold worldwide daily. However, according to online supermarket Ocado, the alcohol-free version of this popular stout in Britain is now outselling the original Guinness for the very first time. Sláinte! We suspect this trend will continue…
5. Dublin doesn’t look like that
If certain shots don’t appear to be filmed in Dublin, that’s because they weren’t. Sadly, very little of modern Dublin resembles how it looked in 1868. For instance, the brewery sequence was actually shot at the Stanley Docks in Liverpool, and the scenes featuring the castle were filmed at Penrhyn Castle in Wales.
Just days ago, James Norton – who is known for keeping to himself and is reportedly single – said he wasn’t in the running to be the next Bond because he felt he was ‘too old’. He’s currently 40 years old. For comparison, Daniel Craig was 38 when he took on the role. Perhaps James should reconsider…
