5 The Batman characters we hope to see in The Penguin

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of immersion in the Batman universe, I can confidently say that the upcoming HBO Max series, The Penguin, has stirred quite the excitement within me. Having witnessed the various iterations of Oswald Cobblepot’s character throughout the years, I am eager to delve deeper into his complex psyche and explore the intricate web of power struggles that he is about to face.

In 2022, I got my hands on another exciting take on the iconic DC character, Batman. As a child, Bruce Wayne’s harrowing experiences left an indelible mark on his life, transforming him into a business magnate by day and a crime-fighting vigilante by night. Patrolling the gritty streets of Gotham City, I faced off against notorious villains like The Penguin, keeping this chaotic city as clean as possible.

In the upcoming HBO Max miniseries called “The Penguin“, Oswald “Oz” Cobb, a well-known Batman adversary, is set to break free from his role as Carmine Falcone’s henchman, as portrayed by Colin Farrell in films.

Looking forward to the expansion of The Batman universe, here are five characters from the movie that we’re eager to see make an appearance on the series.

5 The Batman characters we hope to see in The Penguin

1. Lieutenant Jim Gordon

Jim Gordon, a long-time confidant and partner of Batman, is recognized in ‘The Batman’ as Lieutenant Jim Gordon within the Gotham City Police Department.

Could Commissioner Gordon potentially hold the position within the context of The Penguin’s TV series?

Beyond this assumption, it would be rather unwise to believe that the GCPD won’t play a role in some capacity during the forthcoming event. Can you tell me approximately how many police officers are directly collaborating with Oz?

As a gamer, I’m wondering about the number of rivals who plan to thwart my progress. And among those who remain faithful to Carmine Falcone, how many will side with Sofia?

Given that the trailer for “The Penguin” doesn’t shy away from depicting the grim, ruthless, and violent nature of the mafia, it seems quite unlikely that character like Gordon won’t be brought up in some capacity throughout the series.

2. Bella Reál

It seems that Bella Reál could significantly influence “The Penguin” given her recent appointment as the Mayor of Gotham City. In “The Batman,” she pledged to reform Gotham City, so she will need to deliver on this promise to uphold her position.

Given Oz’s aspiration to seize the role of the new crime boss, this undertaking might prove trickier than she expects. Could it lead her into conflict with the GCPD during this operation?

Is it possible that she may secretly negotiate with either Oz or Sofia, or perhaps even both, to secure a superior Gotham City? We’re eagerly anticipating delving deeper into her character before the release of The Batman – Part II, scheduled for 2026.

3. Carmine Falcone

Although The Riddler kills Carmine Falcone in The Batman, it doesn’t rule out the possibility that we might see him again through flashbacks. Given his significant influence in Gotham City, his death would undoubtedly trigger a power struggle among those aiming to take his place.

It’s no surprise that Oz is among those individuals who aspire to climb the ladder from being a henchman to a top dog, or kingpin. We anticipate there will be instances where Oz might reminisce about his past with Carmine, whether these memories are drawn from the Batman movie or events we haven’t witnessed yet.

It’s possible that Sofia’s arrival triggers these flashbacks.

4. Officer Martinez

Similar to how Lieutenant Jim Gordon is expected to play a role in “The Penguin” storyline, it would be naive to assume that the GCPD will remain untouched by these events. The city of Gotham is likely to face challenging times ahead, potentially leading to chaos within the police department.

In The Batman, we remember that Martinez is a member of Gotham’s police force who forms an alliance with Batman. However, could it be possible that events like Falcone’s demise and Cobb’s ascension may influence Martinez and others to change their allegiances?

In almost every Batman series, we find police officers in Gotham who are dedicated not only to their profession but also to the criminal underworld controlled by figures like Falcone. To create a realistic storyline, it seems prudent for the show to incorporate these types of narrative elements given Falcone’s power.

Will Martinez join forces with Gordon to counteract Cobb’s rule, or will they find themselves faced with the choice of supporting him or Sofia instead?

It’s possible we might witness an internal conflict at the GCPD comparable to Penguin versus Sofia. However, we fervently hope that Martinez will become embroiled in some aspect of this criminal conflict and ultimately emerge unscathed.

5. Batman

To wrap it up, let me just say that none other than the Caped Crusader takes the final spot. Now, come on, who can deny that The Penguin is among the greatest villains in the annals of Batman’s stories?

It’s not surprising that Batman will make an appearance in the upcoming TV series, given his previous roles in various Batman shows and movies, and his rising influence within Gotham’s underworld.

In our storyline, The Penguin takes center stage with a grittier, “Sopranos”-esque style, leaving no room for Batman to dominate the narrative. However, it wouldn’t make sense to assume that Batman is completely detached from the plot.

Could he be secretly investigating a murder linked to The Penguin? Or perhaps keeping tabs on events ahead of The Batman – Part II? Matt Reeves hinted that Robert Pattinson’s Batman might not appear, but they did discuss the idea at one stage. We’ll just have to keep our eyes open for any potential connections.

Although it would be great if Batman were to appear on the TV series, it seems more fitting that The Penguin takes charge of arranging their upcoming encounter, and it’s unlikely this meeting will end amicably.

The Penguin premieres on HBO and Max on Thursday, September 19.
