5 Stars Wars movies and shows to rewatch if you're enjoying Star Wars Outlaws

As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who’s seen the original trilogy more times than I can count (and that’s saying something), I wholeheartedly agree with this recommendation! If you’re enjoying Outlaws, then you’re in for a real treat.

The new Star Wars game has hit the shelves, transporting players into the grittier corners of the galaxy where they haggle with Jabba the Hutt’s enforcers, Crimson Dawn spies, and others. Developed by Massive Entertainment, in collaboration with Ubisoft, who are also known for Assassin’s Creed, Star Wars Outlaws is the inaugural Star Wars game to emerge since Electronic Arts’ decade-long exclusivity deal concluded. The anticipation has been high, and the feedback so far has been a blend of positive and negative reviews.

Currently, I’m immersed in an exciting adventure with this game. You assume the role of Kay Vess, an up-and-coming rogue seeking recognition among rival gangs in the Outer Rim. Accompanying her is a helpful sidekick named Nix, who can perform tasks like disabling alarms, pilfering goods from unsuspecting guards, engaging in adorable cooking mini-games, and gathering intelligence during Sabbac matches. As Kay’s standing within the cartels fluctuates, she embarks on the mission of a lifetime.

Unexpectedly, I found myself yearning to revisit various Star Wars movies and shows after playing Outlaws – not the usual ones you’d expect. Despite being set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, this game has connections to numerous media pieces within the wider Star Wars universe. If you’ve been engaged in Star Wars Outlaws, here are five other Star Wars experiences worth exploring to enhance your journey:

5 Stars Wars movies and shows to rewatch if you're enjoying Star Wars Outlaws

1. Solo: A Star Wars Story

In the realm of Star Wars films, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is renowned for being the film that significantly influenced Lucasfilm and Disney’s approach to releasing future Star Wars movies. The movie featured Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, Donald Glover as his complex ally-turned-adversary Lando Calrissian, and Emilia Clarke portraying Han’s romantic interest, Q’ira. The narrative revolves around Han embarking on his initial journey into the criminal underworld, fleeing his home planet of Corellia and joining a band of seasoned mercenaries, reminiscent of Kay Vess’ associates in “Outlaws”.

What makes “Solo” an engaging watch is its strong resemblance in tone to “Outlaws,” which can be seen in several aspects. For instance, factions such as the Pyke Syndicate and Crimson Dawn are featured, with the latter providing significant details about Q’ira’s rise to leadership within the gang, a point that remains crucial for the game. Additionally, there are numerous alien characters, Easter eggs, and references, like when Han and Lando play Sabacc, all of which are integral to the video game.

Initially, “Solo” received negative feedback upon release, but upon rewatching, I was surprised at how well it maintained its appeal. It’s an enjoyable, uncomplicated film that offers more positives than negatives, making it a worthy choice for those seeking a deep dive into the criminal underbelly of the galaxy in a couple of hours.

2. The Last Jedi

Moving forward, we have “The Last Jedi,” a highly debated addition to the “Star Wars” universe. I recently rewatched “The Last Jedi” not long after “Solo,” and I must admit, while I was pleasantly surprised by how well “Solo” held up, “The Last Jedi” fell short of my expectations even more than anticipated. However, I’m not here to argue about its quality; instead, I want to share that this film features a significant connection to “Star Wars Outlaws” that makes it essential viewing.

In the film ‘The Last Jedi’, I found myself stepping into a vibrant city called Canto Bight, nestled on the planet Cantonica. Midway through the movie, Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) whisked me away there in search of a skilled codebreaker, to help us sneak aboard a First Order starcruiser before it could trap our Resistance comrades. Out of all the locations in ‘The Last Jedi’, Canto Bight truly stands out with its unique charm. It’s not just a place; it’s a slice of the world where arms manufacturers, fueling the First Order, frequent. Interestingly enough, Canto Bight is also the birthplace of Kay Vess, and plays a significant role in the early scenes of ‘Star Wars Outlaws’.

Canto Bight isn’t featured extensively in most Star Wars media, however, it plays a significant role in the story of Outlaws. If you wish to know more about it, I recommend re-watching The Last Jedi. Additionally, there’s a location in the game that is related to The Rise of Skywalker’s sequel. Discussing this might involve revealing too many spoilers, but let me just say, if you’re up for it, giving it a watch could be worthwhile as well.

3. The Book of Boba Fett

Today, we’re discussing a variety of Star Wars movies and shows that spark debate, given Kay Vess’s rebellious nature and disregard for traditional reviews. The Book of Boba Fett served as a continuation from the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, but one of its major issues was its reluctance to fully break away and carve its own path. Despite this apprehension, The Book of Boba Fett offers many commendable aspects, with standout performances by Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett and Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand being among the best.

In essence, “The Book of Boba Fett” delves into the criminal underbelly of the legendary planet Tatooine, a significant setting in both “Star Wars” and “Outlaws.” The series follows the journey of Boba Fett, who miraculously emerges from the Sarlacc pit following his apparent demise in “Return of the Jedi,” and subsequently assumes control over the business once run by his late employer, Jabba the Hutt. Throughout the show, Boba Fett faces opposition from the Pyke Syndicate, a powerful faction from “Outlaws” who are unwilling to acknowledge his claim on Tatooine.

If you’ve already watched “The Book of Boba Fett” once, I suggest jumping to your preferred episodes instead of re-watching it sequentially. The episodes featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu may not be crucial for understanding “Star Wars Outlaws,” but they make a fantastic accompaniment to the video game as Boba’s dealings with Tatooine’s criminal underworld are quite engaging.

4. Star Wars: The Clone Wars

As a fellow gamer, let me share some exciting news about my upcoming Star Wars adventure. It’s none other than “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” an animated series that spans seven seasons. This epic journey takes us through the thrilling exploits of Anakin Skywalker, his apprentice Ahsoka Tano, and Obi-Wan Kenobi during the tumultuous years leading up to “Revenge of the Sith.

Speaking of “Outlaws”, delving into “The Clone Wars” offers some significant aspects. Being an earlier event in Star Wars history, it presents several crucial origin tales. For instance, we discover how the Pyke Syndicate gained power and also learn about Darth Maul’s control over Crimson Dawn, events that occurred prior to “Solo”. Many of these stories unfold in season 5 and later, but truth be told, every episode of “The Clone Wars” is worth your investment of time.

5. The original Star Wars trilogy

It shouldn’t come as a shock that we wound up in this situation. Of course, I’ll advise you to revisit the original Star Wars trilogy if you’re finding Outlaws entertaining! It all ties back to these three films: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. It’s no wonder that Outlaws includes numerous nods and references to them, from costumes reminiscent of iconic movie outfits to characters and settings that were crucial to the storyline. I wouldn’t want to give away specific details due to spoilers, but yes, you’ll definitely want to rewatch these movies if you’re enjoying Outlaws.

In terms of chronology, the original Star Wars movies are strikingly similar to Outlaws. Since the game is situated after the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back but before Return of the Jedi, the universe you’ll be exploring in the game will closely resemble that depicted in these films. You’ll find Stormtroopers everywhere, people discussing the Rebel Alliance’s destruction of the first Death Star, and rumors about the Empire’s relentless pursuit of those who oppose them circulating widely.

Leaving out elements such as the Mos Eisley Cantina, Jabba the Hutt, and other criminal figures from the movie, let’s discuss something else. In the game Outlaws, the Hutts are a significant faction you can align with, and at this particular moment in time, Jabba still holds power. If you find yourself enjoying your journey on the Trailblazer alongside Kay and Nix, there’s plenty of motivation to revisit the original Star Wars series.
