Television has evolved significantly, and creating fantasy shows can be particularly challenging due to budget limitations and the need for large audiences. Despite these hurdles, talented creators have consistently delivered excellent fantasy series, and it’s especially noteworthy when they manage to tell a complete, satisfying story in a single season.
Television is a great medium for long, complex fantasy stories, but some of the most memorable fantasy shows are actually only one season long. While they might not become as widely known as shows like Game of Thrones, these shorter series offer complete stories, fantastic acting, and impressive visuals that make them truly special. Here are five examples, from The 10th Kingdom to WandaVision, that prove a single season can be enough to create a fantasy masterpiece.
The 10th Kingdom Is a Fun Fairytale Adventure
This show draws on classic fairytale themes and follows a group of New Yorkers who find themselves in a fantastical realm called the Nine Kingdoms. They get caught up in a quest to defeat an evil queen, aided by a prince who’s been magically transformed into a dog and a former wolf who’s turned good. Though some of the lines feel a bit dated, it’s a fun and exciting story that wraps up neatly in just one season.
With a strong cast delivering fantastic performances, The 10th Kingdom is a truly captivating show. While the visual effects are a bit dated, they now have a nostalgic charm that enhances the fairytale atmosphere, and the beautiful sets and costumes still look great. It may not be as famous as some other shows of its kind, but it’s easy to understand why The 10th Kingdom continues to be loved by fans more than twenty years after it first aired.
Over the Garden Wall Takes Viewers on a Cozy but Thrilling Journey
The animated series Over the Garden Wall follows two brothers who get lost in the woods. While trying to find their way home, they meet a variety of unusual characters, like a talking bird, a suspicious woodsman, and a strange beast. As the story progresses, we learn more about the brothers, Wirt and Greg, and how they ended up lost in the forest, making the series increasingly captivating.
With its unique art style and surprisingly complex characters, this show appeals to everyone. The main characters, Wirt and Greg, are both likable, and the forest’s secrets are incredibly creative and immediately draw you in. Though many wished it had lasted longer, it’s hard to fault the finished result – a complete and satisfying story told in a single, perfect season.
My Lady Jane Makes History Much More Magical
Inspired by the novel of the same name by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows, My Lady Jane reimagines the story of Lady Jane Grey. Set in an alternate 16th-century England, the show features a world split between people who can shapeshift (Ethians) and the non-magical, ruling class (Verity). Jane Grey tries to control her own fate but quickly becomes central to the conflict between these two groups. Unfortunately, the series was canceled after just one season, leading fans to start a
While My Lady Jane takes liberties with the historical facts and its source material, it’s a clever, charming, and thoroughly enjoyable show. The romantic relationship is particularly well-done, striking a perfect balance between passion and tenderness thanks to the fantastic chemistry between Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel. Though it’s a shame it didn’t last longer than one season, the story does wrap up satisfyingly, making it a perfect show to watch all at once.
Lockwood & Co. Balances Frightening Spirits and Emotional Storytelling
Based on the books by Jonathan Stroud, Lockwood & Co. takes place in a London haunted by dangerous ghosts – ghosts that only children and teenagers can see. The show centers on Lucy Carlyle, a talented young psychic who starts working at a small detective agency after a mysterious event back home. Although Netflix canceled the series after one season, fans are actively trying to get it renewed, as just two more seasons would be enough to finish adapting the entire book series.
Even though it ends without a full resolution, Lockwood & Co.‘s single season is still incredibly enjoyable and a fantastic adaptation of the book series. It beautifully recreates Stroud’s dark, haunted world with impressive detail, and the show’s charming characters have a believable connection that enhances the story’s emotional impact. Add in a cool, spooky punk soundtrack, and it’s easy to understand why people are so captivated.
WandaVision Is a Moving Puzzle Box Series
As a huge Marvel fan, I was so excited when WandaVision finally gave Scarlet Witch and Vision the spotlight they deserved! After being supporting players for so long, this miniseries let them take center stage, and it was wild. They seemed to be living this perfect suburban life, like something out of a classic sitcom, but it quickly became clear something much darker was going on underneath it all. Honestly, it became a total cultural moment – everyone was obsessed with guessing what would happen next each week!
While WandaVision isn’t entirely self-contained and some fans were disappointed their predictions didn’t come true, it’s a fantastic show with a truly emotional finale. Every episode is captivating as the mystery unfolds, and it gives us a deeper look at characters we thought we knew. With its clever nods to classic TV shows and the introduction of Agatha Harkness, it stands out as one of the strongest entries in the Multiverse Saga.
