5 shows that will probably flop in 2025
As a seasoned television enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless shows, I must say that this upcoming lineup presents a fascinating mix of potential hits and perhaps some less promising ventures.
As we approach the end of 2024 and the TV season winds down, it’s an ideal moment to peer into the future and explore the exciting lineup of streaming shows set to debut in 2025. With the arrival of the new year, a wave of fresh series will be vying for a spot on our viewing lists.
It’s important to note that not every one of these series may attain the level of popularity required to be considered a success. However, it’s crucial to emphasize that no one truly hopes for a series to flop. In essence, while I’m discussing the potential challenges these shows might face, I’m certainly not advocating for their failure; quite the contrary, my intention is to highlight the obstacles they may encounter on their path to success.
In much the same way as we anticipate that certain shows may be terminated in 2025, we can make an educated guess by assessing some of the upcoming debuts in the coming year and determine if they possess the qualities needed for success or if they are likely to fall short.
While it’s not a given that these series will fail, there’s a possibility they might exceed expectations and become some of the most popular shows this year. However, considering the current trends, their launch dates, and the general reception to their initial previews, there’s a chance that some of these new and returning shows may underperform.
What upcoming shows on Netflix, due for release in 2025, appear to be at the highest risk of failing or not being successful? Let’s take a look at a potential candidate that may have inadvertently been undermined by Netflix itself.
The Recruit season 2
Release Date: Jan. 30 on Netflix
I won’t continually criticize The Recruit, as it’s among our potential Netflix cancellations for 2025, but predicting its fate isn’t optimistic. Regrettably, this outlook has nothing to do with the show’s or Noah Centineo’s performance. In fact, The Recruit is terrific, and Centineo shines as a leading man. He’s both charming and humorous, making him an outstanding action star! Nevertheless…
In the world of streaming, the upcoming release of season 2 for “The Recruit” on January 30th could potentially swing either way. Just a week before, Netflix is set to launch another series in the same genre – “The Night Agent”. Depending on whether “The Night Agent” boosts or overshadows “The Recruit”, the outcome could be either advantageous or detrimental for the latter.
The level of excitement for the upcoming spy comedy-drama series isn’t quite clear, and it seems that not many people are eagerly awaiting its release yet. It has been over two years since its initial debut in December 2022, which might suggest a lack of interest. However, there is still hope that Owen Hendricks will emerge victorious amidst the challenges facing the show.
Prime Target
Release Date: Jan. 22 on Apple TV+
Despite the impressive pedigree behind it, suggesting that “Prime Target,” Apple TV+’s upcoming miniseries from Steve Thompson and Ridley Scott, might struggle to stand out amidst the competition seems plausible, given its premiere date on January 22, which is just one day before the second season of “The Night Agent” debuts on Netflix.
It’s important not to understate the potential impact of The Night Agent’s return and its ability to draw attention away from other streaming platforms. While Netflix’s popular series is making a grand comeback following production delays, Apple TV+ will debut Season 2 of Severance on January 17th. In a similar vein, Severance might divert or even entice viewers to explore Prime Target during the gaps between new episodes.
Despite the fact that Prime Target may have fewer viewings compared to Severance, there’s always a chance it could gain immense popularity, similar to an Apple TV+ limited series like Presumed Innocent. However, it might be unrealistic to expect another season if this happens.
Ironheart
Release Date: June 24, 2025 on Disney+
Let me clarify, including Ironheart on this list doesn’t mean I’m undermining the show in any way. It’s not a criticism of the show itself, but rather a commentary on how the release of the series has been handled from the beginning. Occasionally, streaming platforms can generate excessive hype for their new content, which may ultimately lead to self-inflicted damage.
Ironheart, initially unveiled in December 2020, has sparked continuous discussions within the Marvel Cinematic Universe community ever since. Just like with any Marvel production, fans have meticulously tracked its development, eagerly anticipating its premiere… only to see the release date adjust numerous times – leaving many feeling frustrated.
Indeed, unforeseen circumstances like the pandemic and two consecutive strikes disrupted the development and manufacturing timeline, initially setting the release date for Ironheart in 2023, then in 2024, and now pushed back to 2025. Fingers crossed that it hasn’t lost too much of its initial momentum.
Goosebumps season 2
Release Date: Jan. 10 on Disney+/Hulu
Could it be that releasing the second season of Goosebumps on Disney+ and Hulu during January might not be the optimal choice? After all, the first season, premiering in October 2023 with a Friday the 13th debut, perfectly aligned with the spooky season. A truly fitting release date harmony! However, launching season 2 in January seems somewhat less appropriate for this type of show, doesn’t it?
In February 2024, Disney+ renewed season 2 of the popular show, Goosebumps, following the resolution of strikes. This new season, consisting of eight episodes and featuring David Schwimmer and Ana Ortiz, was fortunate not to encounter significant obstacles from the strikes. However, due to the speedy production schedule, a fall release like the previous one seems unlikely. Instead, the series, titled Goosebumps: The Vanishing, will debut at the start of the year, eager to make its mark.
2025 might see this new series becoming a highly-acclaimed watch and potentially one of the underestimated shows of the year. However, at present, it appears that the upcoming second season isn’t generating the buzz or discussions it deserves prior to its premiere.
On Call
Release Date: Jan. 9 on Amazon Prime Video
Further analysis indicates that the remaining series are either well-established or potentially engaging options. However, the same assurance cannot be extended to the forthcoming Amazon Prime Video series titled On Call. To express it as gently as feasible, the trailer seems to suggest that it will fulfill the expectations of procedural drama enthusiasts… yet there appears to be a certain element lacking.
Under the guidance of executive producer Dick Wolf (known for his work on Law & Order, One Chicago, and FBI franchises), this show, titled On Call, features Troian Bellisario, Brandon Larracuente, and Lori Loughlin in its cast. It pushes boundaries for procedural drama series by being a shorter-format program; each episode is expected to run for less than 30 minutes, delivering a quick fix of heart-pounding action.
Initially designed for streaming on IMDb TV, the show was later moved to Amazon Freevee. If you’re accustomed to sleek procedural dramas from traditional broadcast and cable networks, the web-series feel of “On Call” might not appeal to many viewers, potentially leading to lower viewership figures.
