5 reasons why Superman IV: The Quest For Peace is an underrated gem

As a gamer who’s seen more movie reboots and sequels than I can count, I must say that Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is like the black sheep of the family – often overlooked, yet surprisingly charming when you give it a chance.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always had a soft spot for Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, despite its less-than-stellar reputation. Released in 1987, it stands as a controversial footnote in the annals of superhero cinema, marking the somewhat subdued end to the groundbreaking Superman film series starring Christopher Reeve that had left an indelible mark on pop culture

Despite its once-infamous status, the movie, specifically Superman IV, has surprisingly held up quite well over time. It may have had a rocky start, but there are certain aspects of it that merit recognition

Superman vs Lex Luthor

One of the most enduring hero-villain pairs is Superman and Lex Luthor. In Christopher Reeve’s debut movie, Lex made a memorable appearance opposing Superman, and his role took on a new dimension in “Superman II”. However, he was missing from “Superman III”, allowing the last film of the series to wrap up their storyline

In “Superman IV: The Quest For Peace,” I found myself cheering as the Man of Steel squared off against his age-old adversary in an epic showdown that ultimately brought their tale to a satisfying close

Lenny Luthor

In “Superman IV: The Quest For Peace”, Lex Luthor’s nephew, named Lenny Luthor, joins forces with his uncle in their mission against Superman. Lenny serves as a stark contrast between Lex and Superman. Throughout the film, Lex treats Lenny poorly, showing contempt for him despite their familial bond, whereas Superman attempts to guide Lenny towards a more positive life trajectory, even though Lenny had tried to harm him

It’s also quite interesting that Lenny is played by Jon Cryer, who later appeared as Lex Luthor on Supergirl, taking on the role of the main antagonist during its fourth season. He clashed with the Steel Girl in the season finale, which was titled “The Pursuit of Peace”

The Daily Planet

In the world of Superman, The Daily Planet is typically a pillar of stability. However, in the movie ‘Superman IV’, it encounters unprecedented danger. A tabloid magnate takes over the newspaper, putting the honest reporting that the Planet stands for at risk

The portrayal of journalism struggles, as experienced by characters like Perry White, Clark Kent, and Lois Lane within the film, carries a dual significance that enriches its themes, contributing to its enduring relevance over time

The Nuclear Man

As a die-hard fan, I must admit that among all parts of Superman II, the creation of The Nuclear Man stands out as a particularly intriguing twist. Although he shares Superman’s power level, his mind, shaped by Lex Luthor, is far from virtuous. Luthor crafted this being with the sole purpose of eliminating the Man of Steel, but in the end, it was our hero who emerged victorious. The legendary Gene Hackman lent his voice to The Nuclear Man, underscoring their deep connection, even if it’s a treacherous one, rather than simply serving as Luthor’s villain

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve never been more captivated than when Superman faced a genuine, muscle-straining battle against his arch-nemesis. This fresh dynamic to their rivalry opens up an intriguing possibility: Lex Luthor might just have the upper hand in strength, something I never thought I’d see

The Quest For Peace

In essence, the main theme of “Superman IV” is clearly conveyed in its it’s a story about striving for peace. Superman eliminates nuclear weapons as a means of promoting a brighter future through peace. The message of peace, beautifully portrayed in this film, remains timeless and resonant even today

Consequently, while the 1987 movie may not have embarked on a grand adventure, it undeniably concluded with a powerful message
