As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast with over two decades of spine-chilling experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that this week’s lineup is not to be missed! The Charles Manson docuseries, “Making Manson,” offers an unprecedented look into the mind of one of history’s most infamous figures, and I for one am intrigued by the prospect of hearing his chilling confessions.

As we approach the penultimate week of November, it’s time to stay updated on the most recent chilling films and series. Though the number of choices decreases with the arrival of the holiday season as viewers tend to prefer cheerful content over horror, there are still several options left for us enthusiasts of the genre!

This week’s guide includes a new Charles Manson documentary series, a Fantasia Fest award-winning film, and the digital release date for Smile 2. Don’t forget that Shudder and Apple TV+ release new episodes of The Creep Tapes and Before on Fridays, and the season finale of From season 3 debuts on MGM+ this Sunday, November 24.

Making Manson (Peacock, Nov. 19)

A new Charles Manson documentary has been released this week, but don’t dismiss it right away because it stands out uniquely from the others. This one, titled “Making Manson“, offers something extraordinary – over 100 hours of previously unheard interview recordings.

In this three-part documentary series, directed by Billie Mintz, it is said that the notorious cult leader admits to committing more murders and expresses thoughts such as “I would have killed everyone I could if given the opportunity, even you.” The docuseries also includes interviews with some of his former followers. Although Manson passed away in 2017 while serving a life sentence, this series offers viewers unique insights into his state of mind during his later years by utilizing over twenty years’ worth of footage.

Street Trash (VOD, Nov. 19)

A fresh take on the 1987 cult film, Street Trash, sets its scene in Cape Town, South Africa instead of New York City. This tale explores the chasm between the extremely affluent and the impoverished masses. Matters reach a critical juncture when the municipal authorities create a lethal chemical, designed to eradicate once and for all the homeless community in their district.

The movie is labeled as a spiritual sequel to the initial film, with Ryan Kruger (from “Fried Barry”) being its director. He collaborated on the script with James C. Williamson, who was also involved in producing “Fried Barry”. Besides being available on VOD, the film titled “Street Trash” will also be streamed on Screambox.

Smile 2 (VOD, Nov. 19)

In a new installment, Parker Finn’s chilling, mischievous character makes another appearance, promising a sequel that is not only scarier and more intense but also longer, marking a substantial enhancement over the original film. Actress Naomi Scott delivers an exceptional, award-worthy portrayal as Skye Riley, a pop singer who becomes the latest victim of this terrifying entity.

In a turn of unexpected events, Riley is gearing up for a monumental return to the stage following a devastating incident that claimed her boyfriend’s life. However, her upcoming tour takes a backseat when she inadvertently witnesses Lukas Gage, her drug supplier, taking his own life—a chilling moment that hints at the transfer of a malevolent force into Riley. The sequel to the gripping thriller “Smile” will be available for rental or purchase on demand starting this coming Tuesday.

The Shade (VOD, Nov. 22)

In this gripping psychological thriller, Laura Benanti takes center stage; a film that initially had a limited cinema run back in September. Now, you can enjoy the movie from the comfort of your home if it wasn’t screened near you. The story follows the life of a 20-year-old named Ryan, who is grappling with the loss of his father, which has intensified his anxiety.

Beyond making matters more complex, Jason, his brother, reappears, dealing with difficulties of his own. The family must devise a strategy to unite when they confront an impending gloom. Critics have lauded The Shade, particularly director Tyler Chipman, who has earned praise for his debut in this feature film.

Rita (Shudder, Nov. 22)

Shudder and AMC+ have made another impressive addition to their offerings with the acclaimed dark fantasy horror movie titled Rita. This film tells the story of a 13-year-old girl confined within an institution, inhabited by girls similar in age who possess extraordinary abilities. The girls aim to seize control from the central authority and gain their freedom.

After fleeing from her abusive father, Rita (Giuliana Santa Cruz) thought she had found a safe sanctuary, but soon discovers the hidden facts about the state-run institution where she sought refuge. This year’s Fantasia Festival winner for Best Cinematography is inspired by the heartbreaking real-life events surrounding the Guatemala orphanage fire that occurred in 2017.
