5 Netflix shows that will probably be canceled in 2025
As a seasoned observer of the ever-evolving landscape of streaming entertainment, I must say that my anticipation for some of these shows is both palpable and somewhat apprehensive. Having watched countless series come and go, I’ve learned to read between the lines when it comes to renewal prospects.
Regretfully, some beloved Netflix series will come to an end in 2025. This is a common occurrence in the television world where shows that captivate audiences are occasionally terminated each year.
I compiled a list of five Netflix series potentially facing cancellation in 2025, however, there’s some positive news. The initial piece of good news is that certain shows on this list may still have a chance if fans work together to boost their viewership. While there can be unforeseen complications behind the scenes, generally speaking, whether a show continues depends on its popularity and whether it attracts enough viewers to cover Netflix’s investment and other expenses.
From a broader perspective, numerous Netflix series appear to be safe bets for viewing in the future. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and labor disputes among writers and actors, many popular shows are slated to return in 2025. Some of these shows, such as Stranger Things, Squid Game, and perhaps Outer Banks if it’s ready by year-end, have completed their runs on Netflix. However, there are numerous others that are set to make a comeback for new seasons, including Virgin River, The Diplomat, The Night Agent, Ginny and Georgia, and many more!
It’s quite possible that some of the upcoming shows on Netflix in the next year might get cancelled. However, it’s too early to predict which ones at the moment. We’ll discuss them further when more information is available.
Which TV series might be at risk of cancellation in the year 2025? To kick off our list, let’s include “Sweet Magnolias”.
Sweet Magnolias
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my concern about the potential cancellation of “Sweet Magnolias” on Netflix in 2025. This captivating series first graced our screens back in May 2020, and since then, we’ve been enthralled by three seasons. However, it’s been a while since the third season premiered in July 2023, and alas, as of now, there’s no sign of Season 4, which is slated for release in 2025. I truly hope that this beloved show will continue to bloom!
Despite boasting an exceptional cast headed by JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Sweet Magnolias finds itself in a predicament due to the relatively low number of Netflix shows that have exceeded four seasons. It’s tough for a series to be renewed for more than four seasons on Netflix, as evidenced by many shows ending after their fourth season (and even more before then on Netflix). Ultimately, whether or not Sweet Magnolias continues beyond its fourth season depends largely on the viewership response when it becomes available on Netflix.
As of now, Netflix hasn’t officially concluded “Sweet Magnolias” with its fourth season being the last. This means there’s still hope for another season, perhaps even a fifth one. It seems fitting to provide this series with a satisfying conclusion, but it might already have done so. We’ll know more details soon!
The Recruit
The series The Recruit, which had a successful debut during its first season released in December 2022, appears to be an unexpected choice for cancellation by Netflix. However, like many other productions on the streaming platform, it may have slipped under the radar due to the passage of time since its initial release. Lately, there has been little news regarding The Recruit‘s second season, with only knowledge that filming is complete and a 2025 premiere date confirmed.
Since the debut of The Recruit at the end of 2022, Netflix has seen a plethora of spy and political thrillers. The question remains: Does The Recruit hold the same level of popularity as shows like The Night Agent, The Diplomat, or even FUBAR? Is it equally engaging for viewers? As a fan, these are some of the thoughts and questions that arise when considering The Recruit.
Sometimes, Netflix can be tricky. The success of a show isn’t always about its quality, but rather the audience’s reaction towards it. If the series miraculously gets another season, I won’t complain. We’ll simply need to stay patient and find out eventually!
The Sandman
In the year 2025, it appears that “The Sandman” series may be facing difficulties in continuing for another season. The initial season of this fantasy series, inspired by Neil Gaiman’s comic book series with the same title, debuted during the summer of 2022. I had anticipated that this show would garner a much larger audience than it ultimately did. Despite briefly topping Netflix’s Top 10 list and receiving generally positive reviews, “The Sandman” was ranked as the eighth most-watched Netflix show in 2022 according to reports. However, the question remains: did the series manage to generate enough interest for a second season renewal?
Initially, it was unclear and remains somewhat uncertain what the strategy might be for the upcoming season. Given its rich intellectual property, dedicated fanbase, talented creative team, and exceptional cast, one might expect The Sandman to thrive. However, fantasy shows often face challenges in meeting the viewership required for renewal on platforms like Netflix. As such, it seems that The Sandman, entering season 2 in 2025, may be grappling with some difficulties.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but ponder over the grand scheme for “The Sandman”. Will the second season manage to mirror or even surpass the viewership numbers of its impressive debut? If it does, that would be great! But if it falls short, there might be challenges in establishing a strong foundation and ensuring another season.
The Watcher
Despite the technical renewal of The Watcher for a second season, it’s highly unlikely that viewers will be able to stream season 2 on Netflix in 2025. In fact, it seems more probable that the series may not return at all.
The show “The Watcher” debuted on Netflix during autumn 2022 and became a significant success for the streaming platform, despite not strictly requiring a second season. Surprisingly, it was greenlit for a follow-up. However, since then, there’s been scant information or indications that “The Watcher” season 2 will materialize. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in fall 2024, Naomi Watts, who played the lead role in the first season, stated she hasn’t received any updates regarding season 2.
It seems highly unlikely that The Watcher will return for a second season on Netflix, given the current circumstances. In fact, it wouldn’t shock me in the least if we learn next year that the show has been canceled.
XO, Kitty
XO, Kitty is the spin-off series based on the To All The Boys I Loved Before films, focusing on Lara Jean’s younger sister, Kitty (portrayed by Anna Cathcart). This delightful show first aired on Netflix in May 2023. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the second season of XO, Kitty, which is set to premiere on January 16, 2025.
The show might very well return for a third season, and I wouldn’t be taken aback by this development. Given that the viewership of its first season accumulated over 165 million hours within its initial weeks on the streaming platform, it seems plausible enough to be included in my list, although it’s the title I find least certain about.
When a show like “XO, Kitty” has such a short gap between seasons, I often wonder if it will be able to regain my attention as effectively as before. If it fails to do so, it might prove challenging for the series to secure a third season.
At the moment, let’s simply watch and find out how things unfold! Oh, how much I hope I am mistaken in this case!
