5 Must-Watch Fantasy Series for Supernatural Fans

As a huge fan of Supernatural, I can say it definitely delivered over its 15 seasons! But if you loved Dean and Sam’s journey, there are so many other fantastic, long-running fantasy shows out there worth checking out. Supernatural was amazing, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this genre.

Whether it was the close relationship between the brothers, the detailed world-building, the heartwarming found family they created, or the memorable standalone monster stories, Supernatural offered something for all fantasy lovers. The best fantasy shows to watch next are those that, like Supernatural, have lasting power and explore similar themes.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

1997-2003, 7 Seasons

Like Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer began as a series where each episode featured a different monster. However, it quickly became much more complex. Both shows feature a close-knit group of friends who support the main characters – Sam and Dean have each other, and Buffy has her ‘Scooby Gang’ – a diverse team of humans and supernatural allies who help her battle evil.

The Winchester brothers in Supernatural are constantly on the road, traveling across the United States. In contrast, Buffy and her friends in Buffy the Vampire Slayer mostly stay put in their hometown of Sunnydale, California, which is a major focal point for demons due to its location on a Hellmouth. The unusually high number of deaths in Sunnydale is even a recurring joke on the show. Like Supernatural, Buffy balances its dark themes with plenty of humor and clever dialogue.

As the show went on, Buffy developed a detailed and engaging fantasy world that really appealed to genre fans. Like the character Castiel, who quickly became popular on Supernatural in season 4, some of Buffy‘s most beloved characters – such as Spike – weren’t introduced until after the first season.

Grimm

2011-2017, 6 Seasons

If Supernatural had been a standard police show, it would have resembled Grimm. While Grimm later introduced bigger, ongoing storylines and a more intricate backstory, its first few seasons were mostly structured like Supernatural, with a new case happening each week.

I’ve always been fascinated by shows with heroes dedicated to fighting the things that go bump in the night! Like Dean and Sam in Supernatural, Nick Burkhardt from Grimm has made it his life’s work, but with a twist. While the Winchester brothers mostly operate in secret, Nick is a detective who uses his unique family history – he comes from a long line of ‘Grimm’s’ who can see and fight supernatural creatures called Wesen – to solve crimes. Both shows really draw you in because these guys are completely devoted to protecting people from monsters, even if they do it in different ways.

If you’re a fan of Supernatural and appreciate well-developed characters and intricate storylines, Grimm is a great choice. It builds a rich mythology while focusing on the personal lives and relationships of its characters. Grimm offers a slightly less intense, more down-to-earth experience, providing a welcome change of pace from the constant, world-ending threats in Supernatural.

The Magicians

2015-2020, 5 Seasons

If you’re a fan of Supernatural and enjoy the dark academia aesthetic, The Magicians is a perfect show for you. Both shows feature a lot of secrecy, but while Dean and Sam Winchester mostly work in the shadows, The Magicians centers around an entire secret school for magic.

Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy is a school for magicians, and it’s where the story’s main character, Quentin Coldwater, goes to learn magic. He discovers that the magical world he loved as a child is actually real, but it’s not the happy escape he imagined – it’s a dangerous force that threatens people.

Like Quentin’s journey into the darker aspects of folklore and fairytales, Supernatural delves into urban legends, religious stories, and real myths, as well as the occult. Both shows also feature a close-knit, unconventional family that the main characters build as they face powerful supernatural dangers.

Haven

2010-2015, 5 Seasons

The CW show Supernatural heavily features the heartland of America, as Sam and Dean journey across the country in their classic 1967 Chevrolet Impala. This focus on small-town life is something it shares with the series Haven, which is set in the town of Haven, Maine.

Most people don’t realize that the show Haven is loosely based on Stephen King’s 2005 novel, The Colorado Kid—although the setting in Maine might have been a clue. The show centers around FBI agent Audrey Parker, who investigates strange occurrences in the town of Haven. She quickly discovers that the town is plagued by “The Troubles,” a widespread outbreak of supernatural problems.

Both shows share key elements: a strong lead character who’s new to the situation, frightening supernatural challenges, and a distinctly American backdrop that feels like a character itself. And, like any good Stephen King adaptation, Haven delivers genuinely creepy moments without being overly terrifying – something Supernatural viewers will likely enjoy.

The Witcher

2019-Present 4 Seasons

Although The Witcher is a traditional high fantasy series set in a completely made-up world, and Supernatural is low fantasy – meaning it includes fantastical elements but happens in our world – the two shows appeal to similar audiences. A key reason is that The Witcher’s main character, Geralt of Rivia, is constantly traveling, much like Dean and Sam in Supernatural.

In the Netflix series The Witcher, a “witcher” is a monster hunter who also has magical powers – skills that the main character, Geralt, frequently uses while traveling and helping people. The first season of The Witcher is structured similarly to shows like Supernatural, with each episode focusing on a different monster. However, later seasons develop a larger, ongoing storyline and explore the roles of key characters like the sorceress Yennefer and princess Ciri in more depth.

The recent change in actors playing Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher – with Henry Cavill leaving and Liam Hemsworth taking over – caused a lot of discussion. While many feel the show suffered from Cavill’s departure, fans of Supernatural who are looking for a similar storyline but with more fantasy and impressive visuals will likely enjoy The Witcher.
