What to Read Next

The Woman in Cabin 10

Inspired by the novel of the same title by Ruth Ware, The Woman in Cabin 10 centers around journalist Laura ‘Lo’ Blacklock. While on a luxurious yacht trip, she sees someone thrown into the sea and then tries to uncover the truth, despite facing skepticism from the other passengers and crew.

I’m so excited about this new thriller! The cast is absolutely incredible – we’ve got Black Doves‘ Keira Knightley, The Brutalist‘s Guy Pearce, and even Ted Lasso‘s Hannah Waddingham! Plus, Sherwood‘s David Morrissey, The Gentlemen‘s Kaya Scodelario, and Loki‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw are all in it. It’s a dream team, honestly!

Streaming on Netflix from 10 October.

John Candy: I Like Me

This fresh documentary explores the “life, career, and struggles” of comedic legend John Candy, best known for his roles in Home Alone, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Cool Runnings. It features “previously unreleased footage, photos, and conversations” with people who knew him.

I just finished watching John Candy: I Like Me, and it’s really good! It’s directed by Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds was a producer, which is cool. Everyone seems to love it too – it has an 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes! The New York Post even called it “a celebration of [Candy’s] enduring work that will especially draw in comedy dorks”, and honestly, I totally agree. It’s a great look at a really funny guy and I highly recommend it!

Streaming on Prime Video from 10 October.

A House of Dynamite

Kathryn Bigelow’s latest film, a tense nuclear thriller (Zero Dark Thirty), has been very well-received, earning a 90% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The New Statesman described it as “gripping,” and The Daily Beast noted its “overwhelming suspense.”

Featuring Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, A House of Dynamite centers around a nuclear missile aimed at the United States. The story follows government leaders racing against time to discover the perpetrator and determine the best course of action. The cast also includes Gabriel Basso from The Night Agent, Jared Harris of Foundation, and Tracy Letts known for Little Women.

Streaming on Netflix from 24 October.

Ballad of a Small Player

This fresh psychological thriller features Colin Farrell as a gambler hiding out in Macau. He meets someone who understands his situation and might be able to help him pay off his debts, but he’s also being pursued by a determined detective. It’s a tense and captivating story.

The film Ballad of a Small Player is based on a novel by Lawrence Osborne and stars Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton, along with Fala Chen from The Undoing. TheWrap described it as “campy and bombastic”.

Streaming on Netflix from 29 October.

Hedda

I’m so excited about this new movie! It’s a fresh take on the classic play Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen. Tessa Thompson is playing Hedda, and the story kicks off with her convincing her new husband to host a really fancy party. From what I’ve heard, things get pretty intense – all sorts of hidden tensions and secret desires come bubbling to the surface throughout the night. I can’t wait to see it!

Based on a True Story‘s Tom Bateman, All of You‘s Imogen Poots, and Tár‘s Nina Hoss are also featured in this “bold” retelling of the story, which has received a strong 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after its recent release.

Streaming on Prime Video from 29 October.
