Spin-off movies have often been a challenge for Hollywood, with many failing to succeed, like recent attempts based on John Wick and The New Mutants. But when a spin-off does work, it can become a standout entry in its franchise, sometimes even surpassing the main films. In fact, some of the most critically acclaimed blockbusters of the last quarter-century have been spin-offs.
The best movie spin-offs take the original story and focus on its most essential elements, delivering what fans expect while also expanding the possibilities for the series. While it’s debatable whether they’re better than the originals, they prove how adaptable the source material truly is. These spin-offs – ranging from thrilling dystopian adventures to fantastic sci-fi sagas – are the best we’ve seen in the last quarter-century, and the competition isn’t even close.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Still Overshadows the Sequel Trilogy
Gareth Edwards achieved something remarkable in 2016 with Rogue One, a Star Wars film that many consider better than Disney’s main sequel trilogy. The movie takes place just before A New Hope and centers on Jyn Erso, a woman running from the Empire. She’s brought into the growing Rebel Alliance with a crucial mission: find her father, the engineer who created the Death Star. Jyn and a diverse team of rebels travel the galaxy in a desperate attempt to avert disaster.
With Rogue One, the Star Wars universe showed it could expand beyond the Jedi and offer a fresh perspective on the galaxy. Echoing George Lucas’ original idea of the story as a parallel to the Vietnam War, the film is a powerful tale of bravery and fighting back. It’s one of the most visually impressive and well-written entries Disney has produced, and a must-see alongside shows like The Mandalorian.
Logan Concluded the Fox X-Men Series On the Perfect Note
James Mangold delivered what many consider a superhero masterpiece in 2017 with Logan, the last X-Men film from Fox. The story takes place in 2029, after a tragic decline in the mutant population. It follows an older, weary Wolverine who reluctantly agrees to protect Laura Kinney, a young clone of himself. Joined by a sick Charles Xavier, they journey from Texas to Canada, facing dangerous, technologically-enhanced enemies along the way.
Logan, set years after the main X-Men films, centers Wolverine and reimagines his world. Director James Mangold crafted a heartfelt tribute to classic Westerns, reminding audiences that Hugh Jackman was the emotional core of the X-Men movies at Fox. The film gives Wolverine a powerful send-off, adapting the ‘Old Man Logan’ comic book storyline into a fast-paced, exciting chase adventure.
Creed Added New Meaning to the Legacy of the Rocky Series
Sylvester Stallone brought the “Rocky” series back to life with a new installment. The film stars Michael B. Jordan as Adonis, the son of Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa’s former rival and friend. The story follows Adonis as he tries to establish himself as a boxer, stepping out from under his famous father’s legacy. Rocky takes on the role of Adonis’s trainer, helping him prepare for the ring and offering guidance along the way.
Creed is a moving story that echoes the spirit of the original Rocky film from 1976, delivering a classic underdog tale with powerful drama. After some disappointing sequels, the 2015 film successfully revived the franchise and built a new legacy for the boxing series. It stands out as one of the best sports movies of the 21st century, and watching it alongside the other Rocky films makes it even more enjoyable.
Deadpool 2 Takes No Prisoners
Following the success of the first Deadpool movie, which redeemed the character’s poor introduction in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the wisecracking hero returned in an even better story. This time, he faces off against Cable, a determined soldier from the future, over a young mutant with incredible powers. Deadpool gathers a team of unlikely heroes to try and defeat Cable and save his friend from a grim fate.
As a huge cinema fan, I think the 2016 film absolutely nailed it. It cranked up the comedy to the max and really leaned into the fantastic, often combative, dynamic between the characters. Honestly, it’s pretty much the perfect comic book movie – it brilliantly pokes fun at the X-Men films it came from, and even acknowledges how poorly received those characters were back in 2009. It’s a really clever, endlessly rewatchable film that feels like a buddy cop movie, but for superhero lovers like me.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Was Worthy of Fury Road
Following the success of his latest Mad Max film, George Miller initially planned a sequel but instead decided to explore the backstory of the popular character Furiosa. The 2024 spin-off, Furiosa, marks the first time the series has focused on someone other than Max Rockatansky, detailing her transformation into Immortan Joe’s fierce warrior. It’s a raw and intense adventure that stays true to the spirit of the Mad Max franchise.
As a huge fan of the Mad Max films, I think Miller’s Furiosa really nailed how to introduce a new lead character into an established franchise – it transformed her backstory into something truly epic. Honestly, it’s just as good as Fury Road; once the story gets moving, it never lets up, building into this huge, action-packed war story that really expands on everything Miller’s been building towards. Everyone said following Fury Road would be impossible, but Furiosa completely surprised me with how captivating and thrilling it was.
