5 little known facts about Star Wars novelist Timothy Zahn

As a seasoned gamer and avid Star Wars fan with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Timothy Zahn is a name that has left an indelible mark on the expansive galaxy far, far away. With his prolific contributions to the Star Wars universe, particularly the iconic Grand Admiral Thrawn, it’s hard not to feel a sense of admiration and gratitude towards this accomplished author.

In the realm of the Star Wars expanded universe, many fans believe it truly took off with Timothy Zahn’s work. Prior to his debut, there were some comics and novels in circulation. However, Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy, starting with “Heir to the Empire” (1991-1993), is frequently viewed as the pivotal beginning for the Star Wars expanded universe.

Here are five things you may not know about Timothy Zahn.

1. Has Written 16 Star Wars novels (so far)

I’ve always admired Timothy Zahn for his exceptional contribution to the Star Wars universe. Since his debut in 1991 with a Star Wars book, he’s been a constant force in the galaxy far, far away, penning novels over three decades. One of his most iconic creations is Grand Admiral Thrawn, a character that has graced four different series: The Thrawn Trilogy (1991-1993), The Hand of Thrawn Duology (1997-1998), the new Thrawn series (2017-2019), and the Thrawn Ascendancy duology (2020-2021). Besides these series, he’s also brought Thrawn to life in numerous standalone Star Wars books. To add to this impressive portfolio, Zahn has written two Star Wars comic stories and several short stories as well.

Beyond crafting the magic of Star Wars, it’s fascinating to know that Timothy Zhan has penned numerous other captivating sci-fi and fantasy series originals. Among these are the Blackcollar trilogy, the Cobra series comprising three intricate trilogies (Cobra I, II, and III), the Icarus series, and the Dragonback series, to name a few. Occasionally, he’s delved into other universes outside of Star Wars as well. In 2009 and 2010, he wrote two novels that unfolded in the world of Terminator Salvation, the fourth installment of the Terminator saga. These novels form two-thirds of a prequel trilogy, with the concluding book penned by Greg Cox, setting the stage for the movie’s events.

The Hugo Award is one of the most famous awards given out annually to the best science fiction and fantasy literary works every year. Zhan won the award in 1984 for Best Novella, which is considered to be a story between 17,500 and 40,000 words. The novella is called Cascade Point, and it tells the story of a faster-than-light jump gone wrong. The story was originally published in Analog, a science fiction magazine that published many of Zahn’s works when he was first starting out and helped to establish his career.

4. Was able to portray one of the Star Wars characters he created

Beyond his iconic character Thrawn, Timothy Zahn also introduced numerous characters into the Star Wars universe through the novel Heir to the Empire. One such character was Talon Karrde, a smuggler who specialized in trading information within the criminal underworld. Zahn designed Karrde as the type of character Han Solo might have become if he hadn’t joined the Rebellion. In the Star Wars Customizable Card Game from the 1990s, Karrde was included, providing Zahn a chance to depict the character for the card image. However, to portray Talon Karrde with his long hair, Zahn needed to wear hair extensions since he had shorter hair than the original character’s appearance.

5. Was an official creative consultant on Ahsoka

Following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, which led to Thrawn being removed from Star Wars canon, he later reappeared, making an appearance in Star Wars Rebels’ third season. Although Timothy Zahn had no direct role in the decision to resurrect his iconic character, he expressed great delight with the choice and went on to pen two separate trilogies, providing additional details about the revamped Thrawn character. When it was decided to introduce Thrawn into live-action for the first time in Ahsoka, Zahn was recruited as a creative consultant to ensure the character’s portrayal was authentic within the series.
