5 great horror shows canceled in 2024 we’re still salty about
As a dedicated fan of gripping and thought-provoking television series, I must admit that the recent cancellations of some of my favorite shows have left me feeling rather dejected. It seems like the streaming giants are snuffing out the very flames of creativity that keep us entertained during these trying times.
2024 saw an abundance of spine-tingling horror series on TV that had viewers gripped to their screens, offering a mix of eerie supernatural chills and mind-bending psychological puzzles. However, as we became engrossed in these terrors, something genuinely unsettling occurred.
Several terrifying series that we cherished were unexpectedly terminated, leaving us dismayed and slightly bitter. Be it due to network choices, low viewership, or creative changes, these cancellations made us feel deceived and sorrowful. Now, we’re left pondering the possibilities of what might have been.
Even though it’s been some time since these horror series were abruptly taken off the air, the sting of their premature endings remains fresh. If you’re wondering which chilling shows we’re referring to, read on as I share my top five picks that left us craving more.
Chucky (2021-2024)
It’s hard to accept that the horror series, which resurrected everyone’s favorite murderous doll Chucky, has been canceled. Despite three fantastic seasons, the blend of terror and humor was abruptly cut short, leaving fans feeling winded. The news of its termination surfaced in September 2024, and we’re still struggling to process it.
It hasn’t been clarified why it was terminated, but there are widespread speculations that its high production costs might have played a role. Regardless of the reason, we’re disappointed by its cancellation! Chucky picked up from the Child’s Play franchise and brought back the menacing doll who started causing havoc in a quiet suburban neighborhood.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment. Chucky was a game-changer, with a dedicated following and critical praise that spoke volumes about its quality. It had the potential to delve deeper into its dark narratives, with so many intriguing plotlines yet unexplored. Even the brilliant mind behind it, Don Mancini, had plans for a fourth season. But alas, the unexpected cancellation has left us wanting more. We were cheated out of another season of this exceptional series, and it’s hard not to feel robbed by its premature end.
Pretty Little Liars (2022-2024)
Another horror show cancellation that we’re still not quite over and will probably never be over is the cancellation of the Pretty Little Liars reboot series. After two seasons, Max decided to give the series the boot in September 2024. What made this reboot work so well was that it offered a new set of characters and a darker, more mature contemporary storyline while still maintaining the core mystery-driven premise.
In the initial series titled “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin“, we meet a fresh batch of high school students who are subjected to harassment from an enigmatic figure called “A.” As the story unfolds in the subsequent season, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, these same teenagers encounter yet another terrifying ordeal.
The second season concluded with a significant plot twist, leaving us disappointed since we won’t be able to follow the story any further in a third season. The reason behind the show’s cancellation remains unclear, but it’s speculated that low ratings played a part in the decision. However, dear _PLL_, you will not be forgotten. Reboots aren’t always successful, yet you were one of the exceptions.
Dead Boy Detectives (2024)
The supernatural horror series “Dead Boy Detectives” debuted on Netflix in April 2024, only to be canceled four months later in August. I have a bone to pick about this. It seems to me that the show’s poor viewership was more likely due to insufficient marketing efforts by Netflix, rather than an intrinsic lack of interest. Given its minimal promotion, many people remained unaware that it had been released.
Essentially, it’s disappointing and seems unjust that this show, “Dead Boy Detectives,” set within the realm of The Sandman Universe, has been cancelled. This series follows a team consisting of two ghostly teenagers and a clairvoyant, all working together to untangle supernatural enigmas. The cast includes George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Kassius Nelson, Briana Cuoco, Ruth Connell, Yuyu Kitamura, Jenn Lyon, among others.
Evil (2019-2024)
I firmly believe that “Evil” should have had at least another complete season, and I’m unwavering in my stance on this. Even if we received a fourth and concluding season with four extra episodes, it still wouldn’t be enough. We required an additional full season to bring the story to its close. This series was simply too exceptional to finish prematurely!
The announcement that the show “Evil” was being cancelled came in February 2024, and fans were swift to voice their displeasure. One of the main cast members, Katja Herbers, also shared her sadness about the cancellation through a post on X. She even playfully chided Netflix, asking if they could possibly resurrect the series. However, as of December 2024, Netflix has not yet decided to revive this popular horror show.
As Herbers states, the show “Evil” was taken off the air due to a network decision. It’s regrettable that Paramount+ made this choice, but I can’t help but harbor hopes of a reversal. The series revolves around a forensic psychologist, a trainee priest, and a technical expert who join forces to investigate unexplained supernatural occurrences.
Ratched (2020-2024)
If Netflix had committed to a two-season run for Ratched right from the start and then later decided against a second season, they could have maintained audience satisfaction. The initial season was exceptionally well-received, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating the continuation of the story in its second installment. However, we were let down when it became unclear if a Ratched season 2 would materialize. It wasn’t until February 2024 that Sarah Paulson confirmed the show wouldn’t return, which was nearly four years after the first season premiered (in September 2020).
Ratched functions as a prequel to the 1975 movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, delving into the backstory of Mildred Ratched, the character portrayed by Sarah Paulson in her role as a nurse. Alongside Paulson, other notable actors in the cast include Finn Wittrock, Cynthia Nixon, Jon Jon Briones, Charlie Carver, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, and several others.
Netflix provided us with the show’s official synopsis, and we shared it below.
The narrative of “Ratched” unfolds the backstory of Mildred Ratched, a nurse at a prominent mental health facility in Northern California during 1947. At this institution, groundbreaking and unsettling mental health experiments are taking place. Undercover, Mildred appears as an exemplary nurse, yet beneath her polished exterior lies a simmering darkness that has been building for some time. This story underscores the idea that true monsters aren’t born but rather created.
