Action movies come in many styles, from fun comedies to serious, dark thrillers, so there’s something for everyone. Several of these films, including adaptations of comics and spoofs of other genres, are ripe for a follow-up. Some stories have unanswered questions, and certain characters could still develop further. The recent success of Top Gun: Maverick proves that even older movies can do well with a new sequel.

Soon, they’re on a worldwide chase, searching for a powerful device called the Zephyr, which could provide an endless supply of energy, all while evading those who want them both stopped.

Though it playfully spoofs the Mission: Impossible films, Knight and Day features one of Tom Cruise’s best and most overlooked action performances. The story focuses more on exciting adventures than typical spy missions, which lets the familiar action formula feel fresh and fun. Many recent action-romance movies haven’t successfully balanced both genres, but Knight and Day does it well, and it’s a style Cruise should revisit.

The Rundown Is Still Dwayne Johnson’s Best Action Flick

Dwayne Johnson landed one of his breakout roles in the 2003 action-comedy The Rundown. He plays Beck, a tough guy who collects debts for a local criminal, and is hoping for one final job so he can start his own business. He gets a chance when he’s sent to Brazil to find his boss’s son, Travis, who’s on a quest for a legendary treasure hidden in the jungle. They’re forced to team up when a dangerous mining tycoon, Hatcher, starts hunting them both.

Even though it’s considered one of his strongest films, Dwayne Johnson hasn’t made a sequel to The Rundown. The movie successfully updated the classic Indiana Jones adventure style for a modern audience. While he’s starred in many action films, the chemistry between Johnson and Seann William Scott’s character made The Rundown a particularly great buddy-action comedy, even though it was released over twenty years ago.

The Hunt Could Have Been the Next John Wick

I recently watched The Hunt, and it’s a wild ride! Basically, it’s about a group of people who get targeted by wealthy elites during a hunt in the Croatian countryside. One of the survivors, Crystal May Creasy, is a total badass – she’s an Army vet and uses everything she’s learned to turn the tables on her hunters. She’s incredibly resourceful, and as she teams up with other survivors, she really makes them pay for what they’ve done. It’s a seriously tense and action-packed movie!

When The Hunt came out in 2020, it was quickly pulled from theaters due to the pandemic and stirred up controversy with its politically charged story. However, it’s still a really fun and exciting action movie from recent years, and a sequel would be great – something similar in tone to films like Nobody and Sisu. The character Crystal, though underused, could be a fantastic focus for a follow-up, and the action genre could use more bold, satirical stories.

The Losers Is an Overlooked DC Comics Adaptation

The movie The Losers follows a highly skilled team of special forces soldiers who are betrayed and abandoned by the US government. Years after being discredited, they come together to seek revenge when they discover one of their own was responsible. As they investigate, they uncover a dangerous conspiracy and use their abilities to bring down the people behind it.

Inspired by the DC Comics series, this show deserved more recognition, especially given the success of similar team-based action movies. With James Gunn now drawing from a wider range of comics to develop the DC Universe, revisiting this skilled military group could be a fantastic way to connect some of DC’s lesser-known heroes and teams.

Audiences Need Another Escape From New York Project

In John Carpenter’s Escape From New York, a tough mercenary is given a dangerous mission: rescue the President of the United States from the island of Manhattan, which has been turned into a maximum-security prison. With the threat of war looming, he has less than 24 hours to find the President, or a device implanted in his body will kill him. New York City is now ruled by a powerful criminal known as ‘The Duke,’ and the mercenary must team up with a group of unlikely allies to succeed.

Despite a sequel, Escape From LA, fans have been asking for another Snake Plissken adventure for years. A modern update – essentially ignoring the second film and focusing on an older Snake – could be a great idea. The original concept is strong, and seeing Kurt Russell reprise his role in a new Escape From New York film for one final mission would be an ideal dystopian thriller for today’s audiences.
