5 good TV shows to watch if you like House of the Dragon

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the enchanting worlds of fantasy and drama, I must say that the shows you’ve mentioned have left quite an impression on me.

As a dedicated gamer, let me tell you, there’s nothing quite like the thrill I get from binge-watching “House of the Dragon.” The second season of this epic Game of Thrones spinoff wrapped up in August 2024, leaving us all on the edge of our seats. Now, it seems like an eternity until we can dive back into the world of Westeros with the third season.

Due to the triumph of “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones”, the fantasy genre has seen a tremendous influx of financial support!

Regrettably, there aren’t too many top-notch fantasy series on TV at the moment, but a few do exist. Add some historical dramas and a sprinkle of unique choices, and you’ll find yourself with an impressive collection of shows to keep you occupied before House of the Dragon‘s season 3!

Due to certain factors, “Game of Thrones” was left off our list. If you haven’t seen it yet, I strongly recommend giving “Game of Thrones” a watch, particularly if you’re currently enjoying “House of the Dragon”. What’s holding you back?

Let’s get the list started with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power!

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

  • Seasons: 1
  • Season 2 premiere date: Aug. 29
  • Created by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay
  • Cast: Morfydd Clark, Robert Aramayo, Markella Kavenagh, Charlie Vickers, Maxim Baldry, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Benjamin Walker, Charles Edwards, Daniel Weyman, and more

If you’re a fan of “House of the Dragon,” you should definitely check out “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” While these shows don’t share a lot in common, I believe there will be an overlap between the fanbases of “House of the Dragon” and “Rings of Power.”

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the clash between “The Rings of Power” and “House of the Dragon” since they both debuted in the summer of 2022. Now, two years later, both shows are back for their second seasons. However, unlike last time, Prime Video decided to wait until the conclusion of “House of the Dragon’s” season 2 before premiering the next chapter of “The Rings of Power”, set to air on Aug. 29.

As a long-time fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, I’m thrilled to see “The Rings of Power” delving into the origins and rise of Sauron in Middle Earth. With my years spent immersed in these enchanting stories and characters, I can confidently say that this series promises to offer a captivating exploration of the creation of the rings of power in Middle Earth. If you, like me, have ever wondered about the intricate backstory behind these legendary artifacts, then this show is definitely worth checking out!

I prefer House of the Dragon to The Rings of Power, but I have really high hopes for the new season of the series. I can’t wait to see how the show improves!

The Witcher

  • Seasons: 3
  • Season 4 premiere: 2025
  • Created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich
  • Cast: Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, Liam Hemsworth, Joey Batey, and more

The TV show “The Witcher” is adapted from the books written by Andrzej Sapkowski. This series produced by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich debuted on Netflix in 2019, and it has been incredibly popular with viewers on Netflix ever since.

To date, we’ve aired three seasons of “The Witcher”, with Henry Cavill portraying Geralt of Rivia. The show follows Geralt’s journey as he safeguards Princess Ciri, skillfully played by Freya Allan, from those who aim to misuse her power, all while the Continent plunges into conflict.

The third installment of “The Witcher” debuted during the summer of 2023, but fans will have to exercise patience before season 4 appears on Netflix, tentatively scheduled for 2025.

In the third season, Cavill departed from the series, and it’s now Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt. Fans, many of whom appreciated Cavill as Geralt, are eagerly awaiting their reactions to Hemsworth stepping into this iconic character.

In essence, The Witcher doesn’t share the same atmosphere or themes as House of the Dragon. Despite their distinct differences within the fantasy genre, there are numerous aspects of this show that make it worth watching, particularly as the storyline unfolds and the world becomes more intricate.

The Wheel of Time

  • Seasons: 2
  • Season 3 release: 2025
  • Created by Rafe Judkins
  • Cast: Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, and more

Among all the series on this list besides “Game of Thrones”, I believe “The Wheel of Time” would resonate most with fans of “House of the Dragon”. While these shows have their unique differences, they share enough compelling elements to keep viewers hooked. You can find and enjoy both seasons of the series on Amazon Prime Video.

The Wheel of Time is derived from Robert Jordan’s 14-book sequence and chronicles a band of young individuals hailing from a humble village called Two Rivers. Among them is the Dragon Reborn, who, according to prophecy, will confront the Dark One with the destiny of the world hanging in the balance.

Currently, we’re gearing up for the third installment of “The Wheel of Time.” Filming has been completed, and we eagerly await its premiere, expected in 2025. While the second season aired in fall 2023, fans won’t have to wait another two years for the next chapter of The Wheel of Time.

Succession

  • Seasons: 4
  • Created by Jesse Armstrong
  • Cast: Hiam Abbass, Nicholas Braun, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong, Peter Friedman, Natalie Gold, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Sarah Snook, and more

Congratulations! You’ve come across the one real-life show on the list – “Succession” isn’t a fantasy series. Instead, it’s all about dramatic family affairs, filled with tension and power struggles. Now, if you thought that meant no dragons, think again! “House of the Dragon,” while still a family drama, takes things up a notch with higher stakes, a different backdrop, and, yes, dragons are part of the picture there too!

As a gamer, I’d say that “Succession” is about a dynasty of billionaires who rule over a vast corporation. The patriarch, Logan Roy, portrayed by Brian Cox, isn’t ready to relinquish his throne just yet, but he’s got some questionable heirs vying for the crown. In the realm of fantasy, we might call it “House of the Dragon.”

As a dedicated gamer, I’d say “Succession” is among the top-notch TV series ever produced, and it’s certainly vying for the title of best shows from the past ten years. If you haven’t caught up with this masterpiece yet, now’s your chance to dive in and see what all the fuss is about!

The series ended on HBO after four seasons in May 2023.

The Umbrella Academy

  • Seasons: 4
  • Created by Steve Blackman
  • Cast: Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and more

While penning thoughts about ‘Succession’, it struck me that ‘The Umbrella Academy’ is another captivating family drama that fans of ‘House of the Dragon’ might find appealing as well. This series derives from the graphic novel series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba, and Steve Blackman was instrumental in its adaptation for Netflix, which premiered in 2021. The show had four seasons on Netflix, with the final season concluding on August 8, 2024.

The series, titled The Umbrella Academy, follows the reunion of the seven siblings, collectively known as the Hargreeves family and informally as the Umbrella Academy, when they reunite following their father’s demise in an attempt to save the world.

Among my favorite Netflix shows from recent years is The Umbrella Academy. This show offers a delightful blend of various elements, and while it’s incredibly entertaining, it offers so much more than just fun. The series boasts an exceptionally talented cast. If you’re the kind of viewer who finds themselves deeply attached to characters in Game of Thrones’ House of the Dragon, get ready to develop feelings for these unforgettable characters as well.
