5 good Apple TV+ shows like Shrinking to add to your watch-list right now!

As a gamer who’s been through the ringer with streaming platforms, I can confidently say that Apple TV+ is a diamond in the rough. It may not have the same star power as Netflix or Max, but it packs a punch when it comes to quality content. And if you’ve enjoyed Shrinking, you’re in luck because we’ve got five more shows on Apple TV+ that are sure to tickle your fancy!

Apple TV+ is often overlooked as a streaming service, yet it boasts an abundance of quality content. Despite facing stiff competition from giants such as Netflix and Max, it holds its own with exceptional shows like “Shrinking.”

You’ve made it here because after enjoying the comedy-drama, you’re looking for more to keep you entertained until season 2 of “Shrinking” arrives. The wait won’t be much longer, as the second season premieres on October 16! However, there’s still some time left, giving you a chance to discover something new. Here are five engaging Apple TV+ shows similar to “Shrinking” that you can start watching right now. Enjoy your viewing!

Trying

The series primarily explores one of life’s most daunting hurdles that both Jimmy and Alice have encountered – the loss of a spouse and parent respectively. This is a situation that resonates with many due to its universal nature. It delves into the diverse manifestations of grief, offers insights on overcoming it, and underscores the importance of a robust support network during trying times.

On Apple TV+, the series Trying is all about a common struggle – trying (and sometimes struggling) to start a family through adoption. The comedy-drama follows Nikki and Jason, a couple who find themselves in this situation when other methods fail them. They navigate various hurdles and emotional rollercoasters on their path to achieving their dream.

The series expertly blends drama with comedy, much like Shrinking does, and you can expect the same vibe while watching Trying. As of now, the fourth season was released in May 2024, but it’s still undecided if a fifth season will be produced.

Platonic

In the midst of his sorrow, Jimmy opts for an unconventional method when managing his patients’ problems. Rather than simply listening and guiding them towards their own decisions, he begins to offer direct advice. At times, these situations even provoke laughter. Unfortunately, such a practice is strictly prohibited in the psychology field.

Often as we grow older, there’s a societal expectation for us to behave in a particular manner. For instance, once you reach middle age, you might be expected to settle down and avoid taking risks. However, sometimes it’s precisely what we need, and this is the theme that the series Platonic on Apple TV+ delves into.

As they reach middle age, two old pals find themselves in a series of humorous predicaments upon reuniting. The initial season is available now, with the show already greenlit for another round.

Sunny

Among the fresh faces gracing Apple TV+ this year, I find myself particularly drawn to the series titled “Sunny“, featuring the talented Rashida Jones. In this gripping drama, my character Suzie is grappling with the tragic loss of her husband and son, who are presumed to have perished in a plane crash. However, as more questions arise about their disappearance, I begin to suspect that there’s a deeper mystery at play.

Of course Suzie is grieving losing her family, and we see how this effects her. And how she works – or really doesn’t work – through it. Trying to find answers about her husband and son’s disapperance gives her a purpose of sorts, but that doesn’t mean she’s not dealing with painful emotions. Just like Jimmy. Plus, Jones is great at some of those more lighthearted moments that add an air of humor in a dramatic show. The season finale is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Bad Sisters

Without a doubt, “Bad Sisters” is among my current favorite TV series, and I strongly recommend you give it a watch if you enjoy shows like “Shrinking”. Unlike “Shrinking”, this one has a more intense and mysterious atmosphere, as it unfolds as a murder mystery. The series opens with the death of John Paul, one of the Garvey sisters’ husbands. As the season progresses, we attempt to uncover who among the sisters committed the crime, since they all had reasons to hate him for his emotional abuse towards their sibling and the havoc he wreaked in their lives.

This one might seem like a weird addition to the list, but hear me out. Again, there’s themes of grief and loss of course, but also what I love about this show is the portrayal of how strong the sisters’ bond is. They’re there for each other no matter what. And despite Jimmy going off the rails, his friends are there for him and Alice. Plus, anytime Sharon Hogan is involved, you know there’s going to be plenty of sarcasm. And the other characters have plenty of it as well! The second season premieres Nov. 13, 2024 on Apple TV+.

Bad Monkey

To round things off, there’s another intriguing series coming to Apple TV+ titled “Bad Monkey” featuring Vince Vaughn. I find his acting style somewhat similar to that of Jason Segel, and it even brings back memories of the “Shrinking” actor for me. Therefore, if you give “Bad Monkey” a try, you’ll likely appreciate the same vibe. Interestingly, the executive producer on this new show is also the one from “Shrinking“.

As a gamer, I’ve come to understand how crucial it is to strike the right blend of tension and humor in any production. Unfortunately, what I’m suggesting here are murder mysteries, but trust me, they’re captivating even though Shrinking doesn’t fit that description. However, when you explore various genres, you’ll notice striking similarities. That’s exactly what Bad Monkey does, and every Wednesday until October 9, new episodes will be released!
