I’m really looking forward to Season 3, which is expected to arrive any day now! Fans of this fantastic action-comedy are incredibly excited, and it’s easy to see why. Tatsuya Endo’s series quickly became a favorite after it first came out in 2022. It really grabbed people with its likable characters, great sense of humor, and genuinely touching family scenes.
Above all, viewers are excited to spend more time with the beloved Forger family and see how Spy x Family‘s Operation Strix unfolds after the dramatic events at the end of Season 2. Since the manga is well ahead of the anime, Spy x Family fans have a lot to anticipate; however, even dedicated viewers hope some problems will be addressed. While Spy x Family often gets a pass due to its genre and generally cheerful nature, it, like all anime, isn’t without its flaws.
Yuri’s Obsession with His Sister is Getting Out of Hand
Many Spy x Family fans believe the series is nearly perfect as a heartwarming family comedy. The only real flaw some point to is Yuri’s intense, and somewhat disturbing, obsession with his sister, Yor. It’s common in anime to see younger siblings deeply devoted to their older siblings, and when handled well, this can be sweet and touching. For example, Kaju from Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! demonstrates this trope effectively, highlighting a strong and loving family connection.
Honestly, it’s a little concerning how far Yuri’s feelings for Yor have gone. It was kind of sweet when they were kids, but now it’s definitely become an unhealthy obsession. He’s a grown man who *says* he wants Yor to be married and happy, but then gets ridiculously jealous of Loid when he meets him! And even though Yor and Loid’s relationship is just a facade, Yuri genuinely believes it’s real. It’s actually pretty alarming-he even puts himself in danger because of how much he cares for Yor, like when he practically poisons himself just to “happily” eat her terrible cooking! It’s just…too much. I’m worried about him.
It’s clear that Yuri’s intense focus comes from the emotional pain of losing his parents when he was young and only having his sister to depend on. Maybe Yor’s commitment to looking after Yuri made him feel extremely thankful, and his loyalty is an unconscious way of showing his gratitude for her sacrifices. Even though Spy x Family appears to be a comedy, it actually explores several complex themes. If the show addresses Yuri’s perception of Yor, it could allow him to develop as a character and potentially fix the .
There’s Nothing to Fiona Frost Other Than her Affection for Loid
Fiona Frost, who goes by the codename Nightfall, is Loid Forger’s calm and serious coworker. What many don’t know is that she secretly has a strong crush on him. Her infatuation with Loid causes almost as many issues as Yuri’s intense feelings for Yor. While she’s considered a highly capable and effective spy, she’s sometimes willing to go against instructions and take matters into her own hands – particularly if it means she can be near Loid.
Many fans don’t particularly like Fiona because she’s so focused on Loid. While her feelings are meant to be funny, her jealousy of Yor becomes frustrating as the joke continues. Some viewers actually see Fiona as less mature than Anya, as she frequently acts impulsively trying to prove she’s the better partner. Despite claiming she’s better suited to be a wife and mother for Operation Strix, Fiona also shows a surprising lack of empathy.
To make Fiona a more appealing character, she requires further development and a more complex backstory. Currently, the anime has presented her as little more than a spy deeply in love with Loid. If the story explored the reasons behind her strong feelings for him, or built a more meaningful connection between her and Yor beyond their competitive dynamic, it would give her character more depth. As it stands, she often feels like simply an impediment or a source of comic relief.
Operation Strix Really Shouldn’t Have to Depend on Anya So Much
The story of Spy x Family completely depends on one crucial mission: Loid needs to become well-regarded in high society. This will allow him to get close to and befriend Donovan Desmond, a key politician in Ostania, so he can gather information. To achieve this, Loid has created a fake life, complete with what appears to be an ideal family, which serves as both his disguise and a way to reach Desmond.
To enroll Anya in the esteemed Eden Academy – the same school as Desmond’s son, Damian – Loid created a perfect family image. His goal was for Anya to either become an imperial scholar or become friends with Damian, hoping this would bring him closer to Desmond. Although this plan is logical, it’s also unnecessarily complex.
Loid could easily achieve the social standing needed to get close to Desmond and his influential group. Right now, Anya has shown she’s unpredictable enough to make it seem unlikely that Operation Strix will succeed. This has viewers questioning what backup plans WISE had in case the operation fails, or why they’re so reliant on Anya acting perfectly when the stakes are so high – war is on the line.
Yor Forger’s Character Doesn’t Always Make Sense
I’m a huge fan of Yor Forger, originally Yor Briar, and she’s quickly become one of my favorite characters in Spy x Family! Honestly, a lot of people – and I totally agree – think she’s one of the best moms in anime right now. She’s just so pretty, genuinely sweet, and kind, but here’s the thing: she’s also incredibly strong! I genuinely think she could even go toe-to-toe with someone like Goku and walk away practically unscathed. It’s wild! Despite being so cheerful and gentle, Yor is a seriously skilled assassin. She can easily compete with the deadliest hitmen from a series like Sakamoto Days, and she does it all with just a couple of knives and her unbelievable strength!
Even though Yor is very good at her job, she’s never questioned Loid. As an assassin, Yor is excellent at detecting danger and dishonesty, much like a bloodhound. We see this skill often when she’s looking after Anya by herself. However, strangely, she doesn’t notice Loid’s lies, even when things seem obviously wrong to most people.
A further problem with Yor’s character lies in the conflict between what she believes and what she does. She desires a world of peace and safety, but she’s very quick to resort to violence – killing is her first instinct when facing challenges. Her emotional control doesn’t improve this situation. While Yor can instantly become an assassin, she frequently lets her feelings dictate her actions.
The Pacing of the Anime is Too Slow Even for a Slice-of-Life Series
As an observer, it seems the core goal of Loid’s mission is to get close to Desmond and determine if he’s involved in anything shady. The whole point of Operation Strix is to achieve this without raising Desmond’s suspicions – or anyone else’s, for that matter. It’s interesting, though, that after 2 seasons of the Spy x Family anime, Loid (and us viewers!) only just met Desmond face-to-face in the Season 2 finale.
Since Loid began Operation Strix, the Forger family has experienced significant personal growth, but the central storyline hasn’t progressed much. While this slow pace may be deliberate, allowing Loid to strengthen his bonds with his makeshift family – a connection he claims is important for the mission – it seems illogical for such a crucial operation to stall, particularly when world peace is allegedly at stake.
Now that Loid has connected with Desmond, we can expect the story to move forward more quickly. The introduction of Spy x Family‘s main villain definitely suggests exciting new conflicts, and it could shift the story from its lighthearted, everyday moments to a plot with much greater importance and danger.
Spy x Family is available to stream on , with Season 3 premiering October 4.
