5 demonically scary movies on Netflix ahead of The Deliverance

As a seasoned horror aficionado who has weathered countless chilling nights and jump scares, I can confidently say that Netflix’s upcoming slate of demonic delights is nothing short of spine-tingling. With the highly anticipated The Deliverance gracing our screens on August 31, it seems like the streaming giant has truly outdone itself this time around.

This summer, Netflix is wrapping up with the unveiling of one of its highly anticipated horror films, “The Deliverance,” directed by the esteemed Lee Daniels and featuring Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Mo’Nique.

The film, titled “The Deliverance,” draws upon the real-life experiences of a woman named Latoya Ammons, who claimed her house was haunted and that evil spirits had taken hold of her children within its walls. If you’re a fan of chilling demonic movies, then Netflix has plenty to offer you at this moment!

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

The Autopsy of Jane Doe, helmed by director André Øvredal, falls into the category of horror movies that refrain from spoon-feeding explanations to viewers. Instead, much of its intrigue lies in the unexplained, leaving room for personal interpretation at the conclusion. It’s the chilling exploration of its premise that makes this film so eerie and captivating.

The story revolves around a father-son duo, both coroners, as they delve into unraveling the mystery behind an unknown woman’s death. As they examine her body, they discover peculiarities that are downright eerie and frequently coincide with chilling supernatural occurrences.

Evil

Despite the technicality, this recommendation leans towards cheating as “Evil” isn’t a movie, rather a highly acclaimed television show. However, given that “The Deliverance” won’t be released until August 31, you might not have enough time to finish it beforehand. Regardless, I strongly suggest giving this series a try if you’re seeking something clever, amusing, and undeniably spine-chilling. It’s absolutely worth your time and makes for an excellent choice to immerse yourself in.

At present, just the first two seasons of the show “Evil” can be found on Netflix. If you become hooked on this series, however, you’ll need to switch over to Paramount+ to catch the rest of the episodes. Unfortunately, the series has been terminated by Paramount+ after four seasons. But on the bright side, the creators and cast were given an additional four episodes to tie up loose ends, ensuring a satisfying finale for viewers.

The Pope’s Exorcist (2023)

Avoid mistaking it with another exorcism horror movie starring Russell Crowe that hit screens this year, “The Pope’s Exorcist” offers an unexpectedly enjoyable and somewhat cheesy viewing experience. This film didn’t garner much attention when it premiered in 2023. In the movie, Russell Crowe portrays Father Gabriele Amorth, a character inspired by the real person of the same name who was a renowned exorcist for the Vatican and authored a book about his experiences.

As a dedicated admirer, I can share that the legendary figure I refer to is said to have carried out approximately 60,000 exorcisms and played a pivotal role in establishing the International Association of Exorcists. Although the film primarily focuses on the chilling aspects of these events, it offers an engaging, swift-moving narrative and showcases some truly captivating performances from its “possessed” cast members.

Incantation (2022)

In 2022, this horror film from Taiwan, made using found footage, was widely acclaimed as one of the most terrifying movies of the year upon its release. It proved to be a box office sensation, and just a short time later, Netflix secured global distribution rights for it.

The plot revolves around a woman named Li Ronan, and the movie unfolds non-chronologically, revealing gradually the grim reality behind her fate and a curse she inadvertently acquires after violating a religious prohibition. Various characters succumb to demonic possession, and what makes it particularly unsettling is that the film draws loosely on a real-life incident involving widespread hysteria.

Evil Dead Rise (2023)

While Netflix won’t officially add Evil Dead to its streaming library until September 23, which falls after The Deliverance premiere date, it’s hard to discuss demonic movies without mentioning one of the genre’s pioneers. That’s precisely what the Evil Dead franchise represents.

In the latest installment of the extended movie franchise, titled Evil Dead Rise, we witness the chilling exploits of the Deadites who have taken over a towering apartment building, leaving a family with no escape route. To make matters even more harrowing, the family’s matriarch succumbs to possession, delivering an intense and gruesome portrayal by Alyssa Sutherland, earning her the nickname “maggot mommy” by the fandom.
