5 best ships from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon

As a die-hard fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I’ve had my fair share of emotional rollercoasters over the years. From the chilling winters beyond The Wall to the political intrigues of King’s Landing, I’ve witnessed it all – and let me tell you, the ships have been quite a journey!

Throughout the 8-season run of “Game of Thrones” and the subsequent 2 seasons of “House of the Dragon”, numerous romantic connections have arisen and faded. Some started off shaky but eventually grew into pairings that we found ourselves supporting.

In the world of “House of the Dragon,” the relationships between certain characters are yet to develop fully, as we’ve only seen a glimpse so far. Yet, there’s enough intrigue and chemistry to make us hope for their success, even if they can’t officially be recognized in Westeros. After all, love has a way of defying conventions, hasn’t it?

Here are my five favorite ships from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon

Ygritte and Jon Snow in Game of Thrones

It could be argued that among all ships (romantic relationships) in “Game of Thrones”, the most endearing was between Ygritte and Jon Snow. They might have been better off spending their entire time together in that cave.

Originally at odds, these two transformed into romantic partners. They managed to look beyond their initial perceptions, potentially paving the way for a collaborative bond between the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings. As they began to trust and value each other, they earned the respect of some others, though not everyone.

It was clear that they deeply cared for each other. This was evident when Ygritte intentionally missed with her arrows, and how Jon held her as she passed away. I believe Jon struggled to move on from the death of Ygritte, and his bond with Daenerys seemed different compared to this one.

Sam and Gilly in Game of Thrones

In the world of “Game of Thrones,” an unexpected relationship that transpired was between Samwell Tarly and Gilly. It began when Sam showed kindness by rescuing Gilly and her newborn son, as otherwise, the infant may have fallen into the hands of the White Walkers according to Craster’s plans.

Initially, they were only acquaintances. However, Gilly needed to build faith in Sam and his companions, while Sam was determined to uphold his pledge. Gradually, they grew more familiar with one another. They stood by each other when it looked like one might falter, particularly Gilly’s encouragement for Sam during his decision-making process.

Ultimately, they made it official, and I can’t recall a more enthusiastic roar for any other pairing in the realm of Game of Thrones. They were meant to be together.

Baela and Jace in House of the Dragon

In the series “House of the Dragon”, though we haven’t seen much of Baela and Jace, their interactions suggest a relationship worth keeping an eye on. Even in brief moments, it’s clear they hold a deep respect for one another.

Baela has served as a listening post for Jace when he’s been searching for solutions to aid Rhaenyra in reclaiming the Iron Throne. She’s contributed suggestions and insights, and also devised strategies to encourage Jace to accept her assistance – understanding that not all men are always open to female input.

Jace has occasionally supported Baela as well. During instances where doubt arose about Baela’s ability to fly across Westeros or her actions, Jace openly expressed his belief that she was at least doing something worthwhile. What I admire in a man is one who stands up for you and defends you – and House of the Dragon captured this sentiment perfectly.

Rhaenys and Corlys in House of the Dragon

Regarding the two characters from House of the Dragon, I wasn’t quite certain about their development given the book plotline, but the show certainly delivered some outstanding scenes, particularly during the second season. It was fascinating to witness the deep affection between them, in spite of all the past events.

Rhaenys stands up for herself against the men in her life, even challenging Corlys on certain occasions, such as his behavior towards Alyn of Hull. Furthermore, their interactions at the docks reveal a deep affection and warmth between them, proving that their relationship is built on more than just hardships.

At the close of season 2 in “House of the Dragon”, Corlys found himself bereft without Rhaenys. This situation made evident the value he had previously overlooked, yet regrettably, it came too late to make a difference.

Missandei and Grey Worm in Game of Thrones

Among the most endearing love stories spanning across these series is the one between Missandei and Grey Worm. Their relationship held a purity unmatched by others, making their journey from companions to lovers particularly charming to watch.

Initially, these two characters lived as slaves in the world of “Game of Thrones.” They hadn’t tasted freedom or affection until they crossed paths. It’s possible that if their lives had unfolded differently, their love story might not have been so enchanting. Yet, the fact that they emerged from hardships and suffering, only to find love, is truly remarkable. Their deep affection for each other was such that they yearned to spend an eternity together. Indeed, their love story, born amidst adversity, holds a special place in our hearts.

I’m deeply disappointed with how Missandei and Grey Worm were handled in the final episode of Game of Thrones. However, I appreciate that in the end, as a free man, Grey Worm chose to visit Narth, Missandei’s homeland. He promised to uphold her memory always.
