5 best movies newly added to Netflix, BBC and more including Jodie Comer’s “fantastic” period drama

Looking for a movie to watch this weekend? You’re in luck! Streaming services like Netflix and BBC iPlayer have added a bunch of new titles to choose from.

One of the most anticipated shows is a wonderful historical drama starring Jodie Comer, known from Killing Eve. There’s also a highly praised new prequel to a popular horror movie.

Digital Spy has rounded-up five of the best, plus a few more highlights. Check out the list below.

Best movie new to Netflix this week

A Quiet Place: Day One, released in 2024, is the latest installment in the Quiet Place series. It shows the very beginning of the alien invasion, telling the story through the eyes of Sam, a woman battling a serious illness, portrayed by Lupita Nyong’o.

Amidst the terrifying developments, she forms a connection with a law student named Eric, played by Joseph Quinn. Djimon Hounsou also reprises his role from A Quiet Place: Part II.

Critics are generally positive about Day One, the new installment in the A Quiet Place series, giving it an 86% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Shade Studios praised the film for building on the original story in a satisfying way, rather than simply retreading old ground. Notably, original director John Krasinski contributed to the story alongside director Michael Sarnoski.

Best movie new to Prime Video this week

Ridley Scott’s historical drama, The Last Duel, stars Jodie Comer and was co-written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Several of the people who made the movie Good Will Hunting have come together again for a new film set in medieval France. It tells the story of knight Jean de Carrouges, who challenges his old friend Jacques le Gris to a duel after Jacques is accused of assaulting Jean’s wife, Marguerite (played by Jodie Comer).

I was really blown away by The Last Duel! The Chicago Sun-Times called it a totally awesome, epic, and bloody good movie, and The Jewish Chronicle said it was a really interesting and thought-provoking medieval story with a warning about the past. It really stuck with me!

Here’s what’s new on Prime Video this week: Split, Pretty Lethal, The Running Man (1987), and Addams Family Values.

Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week

If you enjoy historical dramas, consider watching The King’s Speech, a popular film from 2010. Praised as “rousing” and boasting a very high rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it tells the story of King George VI and his struggle with a stammer, for which his wife Elizabeth seeks the help of an unusual speech therapist.

Colin Firth received an Oscar for his performance as the king in the film, which also starred Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush. The movie was a big success at the Academy Awards, winning both Best Picture and Best Director, awarded to Tom Hooper.

Best movie new to ITVX this week

Okay, so as a gamer who’s seen both, the 2021 Suicide Squad is a huge step up from the first one. Margot Robbie is back as Harley Quinn, and Jai Courtney’s still throwing boomerangs, which is awesome. But they added some really cool new characters too – John Cena as Peacemaker is a standout, and Idris Elba totally nails Bloodsport. It’s a much better take on the whole DC villain team-up, honestly.

In James Gunn’s film, the team is dispatched to the South American island of Corto Maltese with the mission to eliminate all evidence of a massive alien creature before the local government can seize it.

According to But Why Tho?, The Suicide Squad is a significant improvement over previous films in the series, correcting all of their mistakes.

Just checked out ITVX and they’ve added a bunch of cool stuff this week! I’m excited to see Meet the Parents, Stardust, and of course, The Super Mario Bros Movie is there. They’ve also got some classics like American Psycho and Moonraker, which I’m definitely planning to check out!
