Ugh, January can really get you down, can’t it? But I’ve been cheering myself up by watching movies, and I’m so glad a bunch of good ones just landed on streaming services this past week! It’s the perfect way to beat those winter blues.
This month’s selection includes a captivating ’90s noir film, a beloved Best Picture winner, and a hidden gem starring Timothée Chalamet.

Released last year, The Life of Chuck is a fantasy drama featuring Tom Hiddleston and a talented cast. You’ll recognize stars like Karen Gillan and Chiwetel Ejiofor from Marvel films, Jacob Tremblay from The Little Mermaid, and Mark Hamill of Star Wars.
The movie The Life of Chuck is inspired by a short story from Stephen King. It tells the life story of Chuck Krantz, but in reverse – starting with his death during a global catastrophe and ending with his childhood.
Film critic Mark Kermode described the movie as both beautiful and deeply moving, and Awards Radar hailed it as a masterpiece.

Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week
This movie tells the story of Priscilla Presley, Elvis’s wife, and explores the ups and downs of their relationship and marriage, which was often marked by controversy.
I’m so excited about this new Elvis movie! Cailee Spaeny, who I loved in Civil War, is playing Priscilla, and Jacob Elordi, who was fantastic as Frankenstein’s monster, is taking on the role of Elvis himself. Plus, Sofia Coppola – the director of Lost in Translation – is writing and directing, so I have really high hopes for it!
Critics are praising Priscilla as a moving and emotionally resonant film—Loud and Clear Reviews calls it a “tender, poignant drama,” while InSession Film describes it as an “anti-fairytale.” The film currently has an 84% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 304 reviews.

The South Korean thriller Parasite is widely considered one of the best films of recent years. In 2020, it made history by being the first movie not in the English language to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The movie follows the Kim family, who are struggling financially, as they cleverly get jobs working for the wealthy Park family. However, their plan unfolds in shocking and disturbing ways.
The film, directed and co-written by Bong Joon Ho and featuring Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, and Cho Yeo-jeong, was praised by The Observer as a brilliantly tragic and funny movie that will stay with you long after you’ve seen it.
This week on ITVX, you can also enjoy these new additions: Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, Bridesmaids, Memories of Murder, La La Land, and The Goonies.

Best movie new to Channel 4 this week
The 1997 crime thriller L.A. Confidential boasts a talented cast, including Russell Crowe (known for Nuremberg), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and Kim Basinger (The Nice Guys).
Based on James Ellroy’s 1990 novel, LA Confidential centers on three police officers investigating a decades-old, unsolved murder and the widespread corruption it uncovers.
