49ers’ Nick Bosa says wearing MAGA hat on TV was ‘well worth it,’ even if he’s fined
As a longtime fan of the San Francisco 49ers and someone who appreciates the courage it takes for athletes to express their political beliefs, I can’t help but admire Nick Bosa’s bold move. The 2022 Defensive Player of the Year doesn’t seem afraid to stand up for what he believes in, even if it means potentially facing a fine from the NFL.
It appears that Nick Bosa, the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive end, doesn’t seem bothered at all by the possibility of being fined by the NFL for donning a “Make America Great Again” cap on the field and gesturing towards the Trump campaign slogan in front of live television cameras.
In a conversation with journalists on Thursday, following Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in Tuesday’s presidential election, Bosa stated that he has not yet received any penalties for his behavior during the October 27 “Sunday Night Football” telecast.
“But if it comes, it comes,” Bosa said.
After the San Francisco 49ers secured a 30-24 victory against the Dallas Cowboys, Nick Bosa joined NBC’s Melissa Stark during her postgame interview with quarterback Brock Purdy, tight end George Kittle, and running back Elijah Mitchell (or Isaac Guerendo).
At the moment Stark posed his initial query to Purdy, Bosa subtly emerged from behind the crowd, making an entrance into view, all while readjusting his MAGA cap. The Defensive Player of the Year for 2022 then leaned in between Stark and Purdy, repeatedly gesturing towards his hat before swiftly departing.
In his post-match press meeting, Bosa opted for a different cap and chose not to respond to a query regarding his unconventional move.
The four-time Pro Bowler stated briefly, “I won’t go into detail, but I believe this is a crucial period.
On game days, NFL rules forbid players from showing personal messages through writing, drawings, or any other means without prior approval from the League office. These messages should not be visible to the stadium or TV audience during the game, as well as during postgame interviews in the locker room or on the field.
From my perspective as a movie critic, let me share some behind-the-scenes details about the NFL’s rules: As per the agreement between the league and the Players Association, a first-time violator of the personal message rule could face a fine of approximately $11,255. However, when I reached out to Brian McCarthy, NFL Vice President of Communications, he informed me that there has been no new information regarding whether Bosa will be penalized financially for this infraction.
Bosa was asked Wednesday if he had known a fine was a possibility before deciding to take action.
“Yeah,” he answered. “Yeah, it was well worth it.”
In response to being asked why he found himself drawn to it, Bosa stated: “I don’t anticipate that my viewpoint on discussing this topic will shift. It seems the country has spoken, and we have received the outcome they desired.
For a while now, it’s no secret that Bosa is an ardent supporter of Trump. During the time when he was chosen as the second pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2019 draft, Trump took to Twitter to offer his well-wishes.
“Always stay true to yourself,” Trump wrote. “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Congratulations to Nick Bosa on being picked number two in the NFL Draft. You will be a great player for years to come, maybe one of the best. Big Talent! San Francisco will embrace you but most importantly, always stay true to yourself. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
