4 Years Ago, This 10/10 Western Masterpiece With Near-Perfect RT Score Delivered A Shocking Twist

Westerns are popular again, and a truly great film with a surprising twist recently came out without getting much attention. I’ve always loved classic Westerns like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

I’ve been glad to see Westerns become popular again recently, especially with the success of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone and its related shows, which have paved the way for new series in the genre. Over the years, Westerns have delivered some fantastic surprises, like the unlikely partnership between Blondie and Tuco in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the shocking coffee poisoning in The Hateful Eight, and a surprising twist in a Western released in 2021.

Old Henry’s Shocking Twist Is One Of The Best Seen In Western Movies

Released in 2021, Old Henry is a fantastic Western film that unfortunately didn’t get much attention in theaters, earning only $77,463 worldwide. Despite its limited box office success, the movie is truly excellent and features a surprisingly powerful twist. The story centers around Henry, played by Tim Blake Nelson, and his encounter with an injured man named Curry.

Curry has stolen money, and a dangerous gang is after him, which unfortunately puts Henry and his son, Wyatt, in the line of fire. The current storyline is engaging, but the tension really builds as we uncover more about Henry’s hidden past, ultimately revealing he isn’t who everyone thinks he is.

Be warned, major spoilers for the movie Old Henry follow! The film reveals that Henry, who appears to be a simple widowed farmer, is actually the infamous gunslinger Billy the Kid. The story subtly hints at this through small details, culminating in Curry realizing Henry’s true identity based on a repeated phrase. Once revealed, Henry swiftly and violently eliminates all the approaching bandits with both gunfire and a knife.

How Old Henry’s Major Twist Leads To Another Surprise Reveal

As a longtime cinema fan, I was completely floored by the reveal in Old Henry that Henry was, in fact, Billy the Kid – but that was just the beginning of the surprises. It turns out Henry isn’t just like the famous outlaw, he is him, and he’s the one who ultimately kills the man everyone thinks is Billy the Kid. The biggest shock? Henry discovers that Curry wasn’t just a lost soul, but actively involved in the crimes, pretending to be one of Ketchum’s gang to help with the robbery and steal the money.

The reveal of Billy the Kid leads to a thrilling and violent gunfight in Old Henry, ultimately resulting in the main character’s death. Curry shoots Henry in the stomach, and Tim Blake Nelson’s character dies from the injury. Wyatt then kills Curry just before his father succumbs to the wound. This makes Old Henry a particularly shocking and heartbreaking Western film.
